@@JackJackIsBackBack I’ve placed the link here quite a few times but it seems KZbin does not like it. Google- Adam Sandler's '50 First Dates' inspired therapy program Far out magazine interview 2015, published oct 2022. “50 First Dates made such an impact that the way in which Henry greets Lucy every day with a new ‘first date’ and video, a decision which improves her memory by the end of the film, actually influenced a real therapy programme. The Hebrew Home in Riverdale, Bronx, started an experiment in which residents with the early onset of dementia watch a video every morning in which they see comforting messages and reminders from the family members that they still remember.”

I had a brain aneurism along with surgery in 1993. My memory was like scrambled eggs. It took me years to get myself back, and this film reminds me of what COULD have happened to me, and I am ever so grateful that it did not. Having to recover from something like that can be quite traumatic.

I feel that! Got a TBI after a horrible football accident in college. My short term memory is nowhere close to what it use to be. My neuro pathways got screwed up and created a huge chemical imbalance so my brain now operates under constant high anxiety and depression unless I take medication everyday. But watching this movie and hearing other stories show me how lucky I am that it wasn’t even slightly worse.

My husband and I got together when we were teenagers and we used to leave this movie in the blue ray player bc it would just restart itself and we were lazy stoner kids lol. It inatervantly became "our movie" and "Wouldn't it be Nice?" became one of our songs. It's been 15 years and this movie still holds a special place in my heart. Also there were a lot of people who considered Adam Sandler's character in this movie predatory, however that wasn't the case. He was the one who figured out how to give Lucy a normal life. If not for him her brother and father would have continued to fool her every day for the rest of her life. And one day she'd wake up 80 years old and lose her shit.

That's exactly what I thought because he's the only one who tried something
@kbrdft
@kbrdft 8 ай бұрын
I think the discomfort comes from the extreme power imbalance in a “consensual” relationship. He can literally control her whole life and make her like it, without her ability to consent or withdraw consent. It’s not that his character is doing anything wrong, exactly, but that there is so much potential for abuse/manipulation in this kind of relationship.
@galerios1
@galerios1 8 ай бұрын
@@kbrdft I totally understand that. But the only real destructive relationships came from the brother and the father. Granted Sandler's character did use her disability in order to meet her over and over again. But he didn't do it maliciously. He just wanted to get to know her. The brother and father lied to her day after day and when she found out it devastated her and they just waited for the rollover instead of trying something new to help her. The only one who actually came up with a solution was the man who loved her enough to try something new. I wouldn't call her father and brother the villains of the story. But I definitely wouldn't call them hero's by any stretch of the imagination.

They're doing a lot of interesting and meaningful things here, but I can't see it as anything other than tragic. They even mention the "waking up with a pregnant belly thing," but even aside from that, being told what's happened but not remembering is terrifying to me. Maybe because I've lost family to Alzheimer's and memory loss is just one of my primal terrors.

Totally agree with what you said that this is more than your typical Adam Sandler film. The story here is beautiful & like you said I love the fact that she doesn't just magically gain her memories back. Sure in a perfect world it would happen but this is real life. I honestly feel like if this had been done with 2 actors who were more known for their serious roles & maybe take out some of the more goofy or vulgar jokes. Like the joint in the butt crack this movie would be taken more seriously somewhat like the Notebook. Not saying I don't like those scenes just saying for critics it probably cheapens it
@TheDragonsRose

I think people assume it's cheapened more because Adam Sandler's name is on it. But that's just his typical humor and once you are used to it this is a very tame movie compared to the rest he's made. Honestly one of my favorites by him, and truly a lot better than other rom-coms out there.
