Picked up a 50 gallon water heater at a store (Lo---) who I won't mention, late at night. Something told me to cut the box to check the contents, but I didn't. Too late to install that day, so I decided to do it the next. I opened the box and found a very used water heater. The guy who purchased and returned it could be a counterfeiter, as the way he opened it, removed the new heater, and replaced it with the old heater, was a professional job, not harming the box at all! The only give away was that he opened the box from the bottom, no cutting, probably only cutting a sealing band, and resealed it by putting clear packaging tape around the base of the box, after inserting the old tank. When I tried to return the $500 junk, the store manager said, "No, it's your problem!" Needless to say, I got in touch with the corporate location and explained the problem, they said they would get back to me. Two days later, they did, much to their credit. Needless to say, the store manager was not happy when I showed up to replace the used heater for a new one, contents of the box verified on the spot. Something tells me it was an inside job. Bottom line, when you purchase large items from a store, don't feel bad about having the box opened in front of you to verify the contents. Otherwise, you may not get a return privilege. A word to the wise. BTW, if this happens with on-line purchases, you are SCREWED!

Here in B.C , we would need to drop a 4” vent liner down from the roof and install the rain cap. Then run 26 gauge C vent to the liner from the draft diverter. Don’t want the flue gases condensing . We also have to install a vacuum relief on the cold water inlet to the water heater. At only 38,000 to 50,000 Btuh the chimney won’t be hot enough to maintain the temperature of the flue gases above dew point unless we line the chimney. This can be a fun deal to up sell the client on as they will say that their old water heater was being run into the masonry chimney without the liner. We have to explain to them that when their mid efficient Furnace was vented into the chimney it was all good, but when the Furnace was upgraded to a high efficient unit the heating contractor should have lined the chimney as they removed the furnace vent from it.

First off... I love this guy and I love his content. I need to ask the other professionals out there is using galvanized pipe for natural gas is this what they use where they are?? I have to admit I am not aware of what the UPC says about it. I live in Montana. We are not allowed to use galvanized for anything accept potable water. We use black, schedule 40 steel pipe for all gas installations. Just curious what the other plumbers out there utilize...!??

I want to explain the way that it works: if your water heater holds 50 gallons of cold water, it will expand to about 52 gallons when it is heated. If the extra volume has nowhere to go it pushes on the walls of your plumbing. You can think of this process as bending a paper clip; with enough bending, the paper clip will break. Your water heater is this paper clip; given enough pressure from the expanding and contraction, the tank itself can start leaking or possibly even burst. I hope this help. keep up the good work. other than this little mistake, very nice.

This is the reason I don't do plumbing videos here on tube... People in general are very negative. Oh you suppose to use b vent... Of you missing the two strap for water heater. Expansion tank.... Air chambers.. Drip legs. 😠😠😠😠😠😠. Chuck you should join tik tok.. As your kids about it. 😂😭

@10:05 proves the guy is not a good plumber. He did not deburr the new cut pipe. Thanks to him, you will have issues sooner than should. Well, that one way to get paid again. Gotta love filming how you do a job poorly.

@robb1460

@@ChuckBarron Well, with propress fittings, the burr outside can cut rubber ring when pushed on, and the burr inside can cause pinhole leak to be made. So yes.

Deburring is unfortunately not needed with garbage press. When you press a fitting it crimps the pipe which causes the same cavitation that not deburring does. All this pro press pipe will be leaking in a few years.not saying anything negative about the plumber....I just hate hack press.

Not only he used a flex line, he left the old gas cock that leak more often then not, and it’s double valved. He left no way for easy swapping or repair, there’s not 3”s of brass between Galvy and copper, used nothing but propress fittings and didn’t ream inside or outside of the pipe that’s a great way for a call back and slicing the o ring. Ya you used all new technology and did it the worst way possible, congratulations on showing all your watchers on how to do it wrong and take food out of your mouth at the same time, anyone can do that, not one once of craftsmanship. Not one hanger or support of the copper pipes. It’s a good thing that heater won’t last more then 10 years. Now go back to surfing and let the real plumbers do the job. Such a poor install you wouldn’t make it here in Chicago. I’m am not a inspector but I would fail you if I was.

Umm, not to sound like the typical crotchety old plumber but... there is no such thing as a "hot water heater". It's only a water heater, if it was a "hot water heater" then it'd be a storage tank not an actual heater. I had to hear that correction sooo many times in my teens that I'd have crazy surreal dreams and it'd be in them somehow....

Chuck Barron oh you'd be surprised how many say it. I worked for Moore Supply as a shipping and receiving Coordinator for awhile (it's a subsidiary of the Hajoca Corporation) and I was always repeating it to plumbers. Got me into a huge argument once... Thanks dad. 54 years on the job this year, he's been at it since he was 14 and now owns his own company and can tell you what's come and gone down the pipes... lmao.
