$50 Go Kart Find!

In this video we get a barn find craigslist homemade suspension go kart for $50. We wanted to get it completely running and driving before we did the build and we were able to get the Honda gx200 running but the carb kept it far from peak performance. This kart is very rough with some horrible welds but for the cheap price for an offroad go kart with suspension is a very good deal. Despite some of the issues we were able to figure it out enough in order to take it for a drive.

Cool, I like the size ... but be careful because whoever built it really half ass it. They tried to go to cheep. Re check the welds, bolts, and pivot points.

Nothing like a good find like that. A once over with an everlast welder and the frame will true up and stiffen up nicely.

here in cali we use a blow torch cleaning tool for the jets. and then blow out with a air compressor.

Joshua French That's pretty smart, yeah unfortunately the jet that was in there was crushed because someone obviously tried to take it out before us and crushed the entire top of it, including the jet hole.

How difficult would it be to convert a go-kart into a functional snow machine that could be used for ice fishing? I'd like to get ahold of a kart and put skis on the front. But as far as the rear, I'm not sure what it'll require to be able to push through snow. I was thinking paddle tires made for sand? That'd be a whole lot easier than full on trax like a tank or even a single track like a snowmobile. Thanks for any input!

I have a 13.5hp 400cc briggs. I want to make a go kart out of it, and I know it has a lot of power, its on a lawn mower right now, and I can tow grain bins. I want to gear it so that its fast though. Problem is, its vertical drive at the moment, what do you suggest I do?

Dylan Taylor Yeah if you don't want to retain the stock transaxle then you could get a 90 degree gearbox in order to transfer the power but if your just looking for a higher top speed you could try to mess with the pulleys that go from the engine to the axle and put a bigger one on the engine output shaft but higher speeds will cause stress on the axle so it does have a chance of breaking. Hope this helps.

David Johnson We actually did try that but it was smaller and the engine didn't really like it...which is weird because it's basically an exact clone of the Honda

That is odd a Honda gx200 is the same as the 212cc might need to check the valve lash and make sure they are at the right spacing. To tight and the valve stays open ( loss of compression ) to loose and you get valve rattle. Also check to make sure the gaskets are not torn that will make it run like crap as its getting to much air and not enough gas.

XpertShockGamer There's no one bike or go kart in particular, but really the only way to find something cheap is to constantly check Craigslist because there are a lot of cheap go karts out there, it's just that usually as soon as they are posted they sell within the next couple of hours so you have to be fast.
