Hey guys Mike Roberts again. I hope you guys made sure you were somewhere in the ball park as far as other carts camber. And when you cut and rewelded the front carriers you made sure they were exactly the same. DON"T SAY SCREW IT. Remember to play with tire pressures front to rear. Harder in the rear softer in the front. Also you need to borrow or buy a digital thermometer so you can make sure your tires are getting up to heat evenly. Also depending on the compound they shoul be so hot that you dont want to put your hand on them. If your tires are not getting that hot you are not feeling the true performance of the kart. When i raced i used CRG and FIRST KART chassis. During practice when you came out of the pits and the tires were cold you could crank the steering wheel and the kart would just go straight the first lap of a race was always a bit hairy because of low temps on everybody. So if expensive chassis like CRG and FIRST KART did that but once the tires were hot were able to break your ribs and we all wore rib protection you were not allowed to race unless you wore rib protection under your driving suit. Imagine the performance you will feel if you get heat into the tires. Have fun Mike

I did this a few times, practised on the first one and perfected on the second. Both had Honda g200 5 hp motors. Had a blast with both but kept getting busted by the cops. They have no sense of humour, I wasn't bothering or hurting anyone and even wore a helmet when I drove but no dice - can't do this sort of thing for long without the heat coming on. Problem is you can't run em anywhere else either - no kart tracks offer run whatcha brung!!

Adam Foster Are you building it from scratch?
@AdamYUp7 жыл бұрын
Build Break Repeat yes
@BuildBreakRepeat7 жыл бұрын
Adam Foster Yeah that’s awesome, just really take your time to make sure the frame is square and the steering is properly aligned. The first kart we ever made was out of wood we made the chain super long because we didn’t know any better, so just try to keep the chain short and it will have less issues coming off the sprocket, but other than that go karts are pretty straight forward. Also take your time when building it cuz the build is the best part imo lol.

@modelnutty65037 жыл бұрын
agree, also with the angle don't need the camber, only 1.5 to 2 degrees worth. lot more traction steering and a lot less BAD inside tire wear. slice from the bottom up, tap them to very nearly flat, weld back solid. it's dirt cart vs pavement cart stuff. turning right the right tire presses downwards because of the angled kingpins lifting the inside a little, taking weight off inside rear tire so you don't need a diff, same time dumping the weight to the outside tires to take the big bite of traction. in dirt you want more caster and skinnier front tires to be doing the same thing, but even more exaggerated. do that you'll be hooking corners near 2g's like a boss. edit/correct (caster replace with camber 1st sentence)
@BuildBreakRepeat7 жыл бұрын
model nutty Ok awesome, yeah we actually didn't really think that the caster would fix the understeer because it was so bad so we just sent it and gave it like 20 degrees lol. So thanks for the advice and we definitely need to do some more fine tuning with the steering. Thanks for watching!
@modelnutty65037 жыл бұрын
glad you got it, inside tire lifts inside rear wheel (kingpin angle = caster) so both rears aren't pushing, (both makes that understeer because there's no diff). the CAMBER.. when the inside turning tire does its lifting (about 1 to 1.5"), outside tire should be pressing FLAT against the pavement for most traction, it's only gonna need about 1.5 to 2 degrees to be "there". test on a flat concrete floor. turn the wheel all the way right and measure the inside height increase, block up the rear to match that, where that outside front tire should be dead flat. exactly same but opposite to put it there for full left turn. frame IS going to flex a little bit, if cornering hard and that inside rear wheel is lifting 1/2" or so, it's pretty damn dialed! (I mean its exactly what you want happening) I'm sure it's doing some of that to an extent already now with the caster'd kingpins, but all that front camber is going to shred the inner tires awful fast, and not planting the outer corners of the tread down to make more grip happen. that's 6-7" more width stuck out there up front for more stability too. already know that inside tire at full turn is going to kinda almost stand on outer corner of tire, like inside tread about 1/2" to 3/4" off the ground, but in a corner it's about unloaded, same for the rear tire cornering... you want all the weight shifting to those outside tires for the traction cornering hard! yeah 1000+ words later trying to convey the physicals what it should be doing.. oh well! do that stuff it'll hook up like a bandit and not shred through tires like candy. after that you'll be playing with 2-3lbs differences in tire pressures, then wanting more horsepower to corner harder faster because it CAN!
@modelnutty65037 жыл бұрын
the toe in, those short wheels, aim for about 1/16 to 3/32(max!) narrower at very front of rim to rim (across) vs rear rim to rim. should be just enough it about wants to drive a straight line by itself and wont be twitchy when running fast. more than that just robs speed and causes faster tire wear. full size small cars I aim at 1/8 to 5/32 as far forward and back on the rims as I can reach. did it after new tie rods and idler arm etc on my old datsun, took to a shop to have it checked and the mechanic was shocked twice, he didn't have to touch it, then I told him how I did it. he told me the issue I was feeling was just a snagging brake caliper so 15 bucks well spent. thinking about it, 20 degrees of caster may or not be a bit much, you'll sure have a better idea after taking it to 1.5 or 2 degrees camber. why? when that outer wheel turns IN, it'll sweep forward+upward to be more like 6-7 degrees camber and too much for planting down that outer front tread... keep it in mind while watching it and blocking up rear axle to match front lift. might need to go 10 degrees caster and 0 degrees camber for that front tire to hit face flat. you'll see it all pretty quick now that you have the details clear in mind. dirt cart is a different animal with its LONG king pins topped with valve springs, wheels are always taking hits (from front) back and up force, where 20 degrees allows it to take those slams allright. also larger rounder lower pressure knobby tires, needs more exaggerated lifting for live axle inner tire when cornering as outer tire squashes more. camber makes for wider base, and even more when turned facing straight into it's next hard bump... and you don't have the extreme tire wear issues in the dirt and mud crud, unless you're constantly roasting them. nice about those is you can grab up lawnmower tires at a hardware store
