Assalamu alaikum is actually a Du'a for the person or people you're speaking to. A beautiful way to say Hello! Masha'Allah. The brother is correct using mar'haba as hello instead is more slang. Ahlan wa sahlan is welcome (as a warm greeting), but obviously depends on the country you're from. Why classical Arabic and modern standard are the best ways to learn how to speak to almost every Arabic speaker, with exception of Morocco (no offense intended).
