The bad taste is how old it is, if you buy a fresh one, it tastes like regular meat, since in fact the tongue is basically just a muscle like any other muscle in the animal body. You can see in fact when you cut it, how pure muscle it indeed is. However at 50 years old, no bueno.

Beef tongue is a very common food served where I live, Japan, where it is called "Gyuutan". There's definitely a mental block to eating it if you didn't grow up on it but my husband gave it to me without telling me what it was and I found out that it's actually delicious and I'd encourage people to give it a shot. But of course, it's nothing like in this video. I'd imagine the preparation is much different and provides a far more pleasant experience. lol.

It's common in Poland and Germany too. In Poland it's called "ozorki" ;). Usually in some kind of jelly. Eaten with horse raddish. It's a delicacy.

It was a standard sliced meat when I was growing up in Scotland in the 1980s. It was pressed into a lump with some kind of firm jelly, cooked, cooled, and then sliced fairly thin. It was... fine? I don't recall anything particularly weird about it other than a strange swirly texture when you looked at the slices. Turns out cattle use their tongues a lot and as a result they're solid muscle.

I have actually seen ox tongue packaged in the fresh meats department of my local Kroger (grocery chain in the US). I have...never actually seen it canned like that, and I was born approximately six or seven years prior to this meat's processing. And I am eternally grateful for that :)

You can still buy fresh ox tongue in the meats department of larger supermarkets here in Switzerland. I never liked the look of them but canned it looked even worse, even if remarkably intact.

Genuinely impressed by the number of people that find this more horrifying than the chicken in a can. This just looks like a pretty nicely cured ox tongue. The jelly turning into something aking to pepto bismol is rather disconcerting, as is the fact that you decided to chow into the damn thing without removing the outer layer, which is how tongues are commonly dealt with, but overall looks fine really.
