That 86 is a weapon on corners. The lightness allows you to brake very late, and the pointiness allows you to really follow the turn, the balance allows you to keep the momentum for the exit. And at the exit you can get the gas early. It's freaking awesome. That's where all the fun is!

Good on you for not letting that Mercedes ruin your attitude. Lots of time I see faster cars get too annoyed by slower cars in front. They seem to forget it’s an open track day and everyone shares the track. Great video!

That's so true. A good driver - a trustworthy driver - makes the day safer for everybody by not letting his emotions make his decisions for him. When I'm stuck behind a slower driver for a bit, I use the opportunity to quit relying on my car's power so much, and instead concentrate on my line and technique, minimum braking, etc. It's a fun game to see if I can still keep up only using 2/3 throttle or whatever. Once I adopted this mentality, I never got frustrated by anyone else ever again. Every single lap need not be a time attack. One Saturday in my Exige, I flat-spotted a cam lobe and broke the follower. Would go into limp mode if I exceeded 4700 rpm. So not wanting my weekend money to be wasted, I stayed the rest of Saturday and all of Sunday...just short shifting at 4500 the entire time. (Red line is 8500). I worked on the details of driving better, and was surprised that by Sunday afternoon, my laps were only 2.5 seconds less that I was used to on a 1.7 mile track. I think I learned more that weekend than any other. When I went back the next month after fixing the engine, I bested my old personal record by 1.5 seconds, just by implementing the smooth, minimalist consistency I had practiced that weekend. I learned a good lesson. Sometimes forgetting all about trying to go fast...helps you learn to go fast. Forget about how fast you can go RIGHT NOW, and instead focus on some aspect of your skill set. You'll get faster sooner.

@@phelpsgarage4202 You're welcome. I really, really like the format of this video. I have always enjoyed taking turns playing lead/follow with track buddies, and then comparing notes after the session. You know, the pros and cons of a slightly different line, a slightly different braking point, etc. The characteristics of one car vs. another car. How a buddy might be a little faster in one segment, but you might be a little faster in a different segment, and why. This video kind of speaks to that mentality. It sparks the memories of my most enjoyable HPDE weekends with friends. I would definitely watch more like this one if you get the chance again.

@@phelpsgarage4202 Suggestion for Tom: I know it's not easy, especially as a beginner...but try to think about transferring weight around more smoothly. Instead of jerking the wheel at turn-in, try rolling your input in smoothly. I mean, you can't be TOO slow with it, or you won't make the turn at all LOL, but just a tad bit slower than you are doing...less of a sudden jerk on the wheel. And begin your turn-in as you're rolling off the brakes just as smoothly. (This is the beginnings of trail braking, so as you advance you'll get even further into this....) The idea is to still have some weight thrown forward from braking, and gently shifting that weight to the outside front tire as you're beginning the turn. This can help that outside front tire hang on a little bit better instead of just giving up and instantly under-steering. It will be a minor difference, but you can learn to sort of nurse that turn-in point in such a way as to get less under-steer. This technique will help your turn-in grip both before and after you get a decent track alignment. If your inputs are smooth, you're shifting the weight around at the same time you're asking the tire to do the work, instead of suddenly asking it to do the work before you've loaded it with the weight. Hope this helps, and hope you enjoy your new hobby as much as I have over the years!

Agreed! He is stabbing into the corners for a way too early apex and he's pushing because of too much input and too much gas. He wants the car to turn with just steering and that's his hill to climb. He needs to get that fat and heavy rear end to rotate.

Lovely video. I wanted to ask you if you recommend the Perrin Rear sway bars(25mm). Do you have front sway bar as well? and lastly, did the rear sway bar eliminated the body roll? I would like to try a bigger rear sway bar to see if I can tame the rear a little. I feel that the car is too much of tail happy.

Why would you pass the instructor instead of ghosting him? Especially when he has the same car? Tom should get an instructor in his car asap. Autocross is slower and safer for new drivers, and it teaches you much quicker. PITL Do you have a real DAQ? It will tell you where you're gaining/losing time for various tweaks, and not just an overall time.
