If you swap the engine in the EG for something proper, and do all the supporting mods that you've mentioned I really wouldn't be surprised if it got faster than the new Type R on the track due to the massive weight difference, and potentially lower center of gravity on the EG.

@@willy_akino It's all tongue and cheek, or its all for fun. BUT a true comparison would be interesting. Almost any new stock civic already out competes a performance model from the past. But the most important factor with these old EF, EG, EK chassis was weight and double wish bone suspension. The combination of those two made these cars go carts. Ditch the 14" 175 tires and slap on some 15" 225's and it was all you needed.... plus a bucket seat... plus brakes... plus some nice tires.... learned a lot on this platform.

If you took HALF the price of the Civic Type R, and invested it into an EG or EK, you could have a car that is literally better in almost every way than the new Civic Type R. You could buy top of the line suspension and drivetrain components(AWD), make well over 500whp, and also choose to make the car comfortable on top of it too if you wanted. Like me, I had my entire dc5 professionally sound-deadened and have electric AC and PS so the car makes 600whp, is AWD, and is as comfortable as can be. I am sure the new type r look will keep growing on me more, I prefer it in most ways to the previous gen except maybe the front. I liked the larger corner bumper areas more on the previous gen, but all in all this one is nice and improved in a lot of ways (like the wing). The hatch looks still more like an elongated sedan so think from a hatch standpoint that is a miss, but also find it funny how they re-designed the taillights and now the 22 subaru wrx tail lights looks more like a honda than the honda does now hah

I used to own an eg Civic when I was a teenager! Was full grandpa spec, still had all the factory trims. Original wheels, headlight covers, original stereo and with under 100,000km! Wish I kept that beast 😅
@Levibetz2 жыл бұрын
Okay, now we've gotta see how cheaply the EG could meet or beat the Type R's lap time. Wheels/tires and coilovers I bet gets you half the way there. Some power mods and you're quickly catching it I think.

@Socal Drives that’s the easy way out. I wanna see how much they can fuck with this single cam.

The big difference between the two is the longevity and ease of maintenance. I would expect the 90's civic to last a lot longer than the new one. Parts are going to be super easy to come by and a lot easier to work on. Everything about the older civic and many older vehicles in general is that they are extremely easy to work on. We rebuilt the rear end of our F350 after an axle broke. Recently replaced the steering gearbox and so many other repairs to it.
@matthewwillis21352 жыл бұрын
You’d be surprised how easy the new civic is to work on and how reliable
@KnownDude2222 жыл бұрын
That new civic still has that Honda reliability behind it, when you've been making motors for that long you're not suddenly going to make stinkers because times changed. Maintenance will likely be the same with focus on the oil and coolant, as always, parts I do agree will be more expensive when they do break but probably more due to the type r being a purpose built vs the EG being the grocery getter economy of the 90s.

@@samlung2724 depends on the part. The transaxle was a tough find, we got really lucky with the salvage yard. But we bought a rebuild kit. There are other parts for our 91 f350 that are available all day everyday.

I bought a 1992 Civic Hatchback for $500.00 CAD in 2004 and it was the best car I've ever owned. I've had Porsches, Mazda RX7s and nothing compared to the reliability, peppy feel and overall handling of the Civic. The clutch was smooth as silk to push in and the shifting was unbelievble to find each gear. I seriously doubt any of these electronic cars today will even be drivable 30 years from the purchase date.
@JRDNCAT2 жыл бұрын
You guys should take the EG hatch, strip it out completely, add racing seats and a roll cage, add new wheels/brakes/suspension and swap in a K24. Make it a full time attack race car with crazy aero and a halltech dash!

This was definitely great I grew up wrenching on the eg hatch platform and being that it’s a cx you have the weight to your advantage. Even putting in a different ratio transmission from a ex/si d series makes that little 8v fun but ultimately would be cool to see it upgraded in a way that keeps costs to a minimum to see if you could modify it in a way to suite your needs and wants out of it… one way would be using parts from different models but are bolt in upgrades (integra seats have decent bolstering, delsol makes you sit lower ) so many options with this era of Honda you can basically Lego a build
