I'm *just* getting a 17-70mm lens and haven't taken it out yet. Around 4:30, you mention having to see things from further back. THAT was a key detail. Worth the whole video.

Some suggest 28+50 is a good combination but I am still struggling which to use when I only want to bring one camera with a lens on it, which makes me keep watching the street photography of the two focal lengths, and btw, I like your style very much!

Thank you. I tend to make the decision when I get to the location. So I will normally have both with me. I'm trying to get up to speed with the 50mm as I think it's probably the best all-round lens that I have.

I' have just not long bought a 16-24mm lens so I am going to use it for street photography hopefully getting the same result with a different look to my images zone focusing and shoot from the chest 👍🙏

Sensational photography. Love the girl surrounded by the her brothers/family and the three girls and the mural. I noticed you mentioned that shooting into the sun simplified scenes. I always thought if you have the sun behind it would illuminate and bring out features in your subject/faces more?
@WalkLikeAlice
@WalkLikeAlice 6 ай бұрын
Thank you. With b/w the sun becomes difficult to work with if it’s behind you. Everything gets illuminated and you end up with areas of high contrast with little to separate the tones within the scene. Generally speaking, higher contrast means less tonal range and less separation of elements in the frame. With colour you can get away with it as the colour helps to separate the elements, and the stronger light increases the saturation of the colours.

A couple months ago I was visiting a bookstore with my son and DiL. It was an interesting palce and I decided to carry the X100V at my side and surreptitiously capture other customers in the place. I came away with a few nice captures. I've been shooting the X100V so much that it will take an adjustment to take out the X-E4 with a 35mm lens on it and make it work. Ha! Nice work.

First I would like to compliment you and Sarah for an excellent series of videos which both informative and inspiring. The question that eludes me is what commercial value does street photography have, other than the obvious of books and group tutorials etc. I know getting out and about with a camera has to be a good thing and obviously it brings a lot of pleasure to the photographer. But are we not invading people’s right to privacy by capturing their unaware moments, not to mention photographing children and the possible implications that could cause. Don’t get me wrong, I have also been photographing people on the street since 1970 and have a large collection of photos, unfortunately I do not have model releases for the pictures so I can’t place them with Getty or other agencies. Keep up the great work I look forward to your next videos
@WalkLikeAlice
@WalkLikeAlice 2 ай бұрын
The first thing to remember, is in the UK there is no expectation or right to privacy in a public place. Secondly, photojournalists with Getty (I’m friends with several) do not need model releases to have work published. The only issues come when a photo is to be used for advertising. Then a release is sought because the person(s) in the photographs may not agree to be affiliated with a brand or advert. Final thing, street photography generally isn’t a commercial enterprise. It’s an artistic pursuit and also a desire to record daily life at this moment in our society. It’s incredibly difficult to monetise it.

@@WalkLikeAlice I have been with Getty for at least 25 years and have always been asked to supply model releases, However, I haven't submitted any street photography images, but am in the process of scanning in many shots from the 1970's and 80's and have found some interesting shots, I will update my web site with a collection of them. Best wishes Vincent

Some really nice captures there Jeff. Zone focusing with the 50mm particularly well handled and judged. What happened to the film Leica? I thought you were moving back to film only. taking advantage of depth of field when shooting with a small aperture such as f11 or f22 allows you to get a relatively sharp image if your subject falls within the zone of focus. The wider your lens you use (35mm, 28mm), the more depth you get. Very good skill with the 50mm. nice

I just discovered this channel, very great. Thanks for all the content. I wanted to ask two things, one if you take many shots when you see something and then you decide later (like 5 pics in a row) or just one shot. Second, checking your way of shooting sometimes without checking the viewfinder, do you do a lot of reframing later? Thanks
@WalkLikeAlice
@WalkLikeAlice 4 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching 🙏 To answer your questions, we tend to take one shot, sometimes two. Our cameras won’t burst shoot, so we couldn’t take multiples even if we wanted to. We try and get everything in one shot. There is sometimes a little bit of straightening the shot in the edit. But if the shot needs a big crop, I will generally discard it. Sometimes, I’ll see something which I physically can’t get close to, and I will make a conscious decision whether to shoot or not. The other issue is that our cameras are only 18mp so there isn’t a lot of latitude to crop.
@caamada

@@WalkLikeAlice Thanks a lot for your answers. Really appreciate it. I asked because I don't like editing so I try to get all I can from camera. I will try shooting from the hip. Clearly you already have a great technique. Thanks again.

I just got myself the original M Monochrom. I was wondering if you shoot in manual or aperture priority mode? Also, how are you metering? I have been metering under to where I have the arrow and the dot just appears. Seems to give me the most consistent results. As far as focal length, I am about 50/50 between the 35mm and 50mm on my M11, M9M, and M5. My focal length choice usually falls upon two factors -- where I am shooting and my mood. Always love your vids!

@@WalkLikeAlice thanks for sharing. Reading the manual I see that 5m-10m is the sweet spot for a 50mm but I never see anyone speak to it. I only come across the complaints about the limited of dof of the 50mm. My understanding is if you’re at one of the two distances that dof isn’t really an issue. Your images confirmed that for me. Thank you for sharing. Going for a walk with the 50 now!

@@WalkLikeAlice thanks. This video profoundly affected my approach to photography. I never tried street photography, especially B&W with only one prime glass. I was lucky today - drove down to the car boot sale in Carnforth that actually was off, so we decided with my girls to visit Kendal for a change. I had my D610 and an old 50mm 1.4, however, it was a little bit slow with autofocus shooting from the hip (the d610 doesn't have a flip screen), but I visited a local CEX seconds hand shop and they had a 50mm 1.4G. Damn best purchase since I don't remember when. I managed to pull some really nice shots in Kendal, and then on the way back (I'm from the Bolton area) we stopped in Morecambe - the gallery of characters there was really interesting and catching their moments in B&W prime 50mm - just amazing. Thanks for being an inspiration. Cheers
