30psi. vs. 50psi. boost, dohc vs. sohc, 4 valves vs. 2 valves per. cyl., 2jz vs. rb30, turbo lag, blow off valves, etc. All this wisdom is just pouring through the armchair tuner community and you guys at JPC have the audacity to show an RB30 actually making over 1200hp on the dyno! Imagine what you could do if you only knew what your computer bound advisors are trying to tell you! I am truly LOL. Great work, by the way.

I see no BOV but... Flutter at deceleration is not the kind of compressor/turbo surge that damages shaft bearings, and motors. True compressor surge happens at peak power. When the turbo produces more air flow than the motor can swallow, the turbine stalls and compression suddenly flows backwards out cold air intake. Once the pressure drops, the turbo is able to grip the air again, boost quickly develops, and the turbo stall again. Because compressed air is elastic, this sudden stall and recovery cycle sends powerful reverberation through the entire intake, engine, and exhaust system. This is what causes damage. At deceleration, the throttle body is closed and the pressure reverb is isolated to I/C and plumbing. Although this is hard on the turbo, it's not life threatening because the backlash is minimized and pressure falls off quickly. Here is an example of the dangerous kind of surge. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHTNZ4amrNFkebc Best regards to all.

Bruce Carbon Lakeriver Temp stability checks run an engine in a room for an hour at full load pushing 50 pounds of boost with little to no air flow for cooling? How many motors have you built - none?

honda12345678 At first I am using metric units and none of those irrational imperial units; second, how did you come to the magic number of .. a hour? And third, from where could you know how many engines I might have built? Magic crystal ball ? And 4th I did ask about for the requirements, so Fullboost answered that, thx for that at this time - and therefore the point is done!
@caribbeangtr80779 жыл бұрын
Bruce Carbon Lakeriver For what reason? Who is going to be driving under full load on a street for several minutes? If it's a 1/2 mile, hopefully it won't be more than 10 seconds. So wh put the motor under that amount of stress. The true test is to see how many pulls it will handle and stay in one piece like how it's being done now.

Can someone explain me why someone that builds a turbo engine like that would run no BOV like that? I know some won't handle 50psi because they will just explode, other won't stay shut and create a boost leak, but some blow off valves can be adjusted with a spring to avoid that, even with that much boost. I just don't understand why they rather destroy a 2000$ turbo instead of a 300$ blow off valve. If someone can answer, that would be great!
@fullboost9 жыл бұрын
+Justin Larrivée . Many go on about the 'damage' that will be caused without a BOV, but is this from first hand experience or others just saying it will cause damage...? I've seen countless RB30s without BOVs on the street for YEARS getting thrashed. The turbos have never had any problems and they were always running a decent boost level (20+psi). These were mainly bush bearing turbos. My current car has a BOV as it came with it, but previous cars never had them.

that turbo flutter tho
@BryceMR2SW2011 жыл бұрын
No. Joseph Small is spot on. There are way to many variables to say that dose-ing is the cause shortened turbo life. The only thing you want to look out for, is when you get compressor surge whilst under load.

I kind of think the blue silicone piping connectors bulge up when the boost same on. It's difficult to tell it did feel like they changed shape. Damn!

In Brazil we use ethanol in our cars. Kinda like 7 out of 10 cars here can run both on gas or ethanol. But, I think government ruled E80 spec here. There are many reasons why it's not higher level, but it's cool to see it in a project like this one.

the sound of the air pressure surging when the throttle is snapped shut and the turbo has nowhere to push the air. the air tries to escape back out the turbo making a whistle/flutter sound at the same time

It's the bov if it was turbo surge they would have fixed it.
@lynel198510 жыл бұрын
***** turbo surge that they eliminate for turbo longevity is when on throttle. This reversion you hear when the throttle is shut is not damaging to performance or longevity
@TheBd5010 жыл бұрын
Lynel Simpson They can limit total boost for drive pressure reason, but when the fuel and throttle and turned off the shutter you hear in the video is TERRIBLE for bearings and can even snap shafts. THAT IS BAD FOR LONGEVITY get a clue good lord..
@Gary-cd6rd10 жыл бұрын
Not true, the reversion that happens after the throttle is closed is negligible to longevity. Surge under boost is most definitely terrible, but not in this case. Listen to most of the newer diesel trucks, they have massive reversion stock from the factory without a blow off valve. The main reason a bov is used is to keep the compressor speeds up in between gears by not having it push against the throttle plate causing it to slow down quickly.
@TheBd5010 жыл бұрын
That makes sense to help keep the turbine speeds up during shifting, however "reversion" is most definitely "harder" on a chargers shaft and bearings than if it were to not do any "reversion" at all. BTW: Most new trucks have almost ZERO reversion from the factory. The only way to get any kind of reversion out of them is to basically do a burnout, and let off suddenly. Under most normal driving conditions you'll never hear anything, their compressor wheels arent big enough, and the exhaust side A/R is too tight

@TrashHeapCustodian11 жыл бұрын
It's not a myth, compressor surge can damage turbos, but in super high power applications like this it's not really an issue since it's not going in a DD anyway. If this was supposed to be a street car engine, it'd be a good idea to have a BOV.

No bov is fine... The fluttering is fine too... The only problem that will kill turbos is when you try to push 40+ pounds through a restrictive intake and the pressure cant go anywhere, it soon pumps to way more than you planned for and The air starts forcing its way back through the turbo intake helicoptering the fins and shredding the bearings. This only starts happening when you try to make big pressure on small restrictive intake manifolds, pipes intercoolers, and even bad flowing heads.
