Just wanted to post a big THANK YOU. Because of this video, your efforts gave me the confidence that I could do the job myself. After watching it 3 times, and taking copious notes while I was watching, I felt that I was up to the challenge. The job turned out perfect, thanks to you. Doing this project myself made me appreciate the quality engineering BMW puts in their vehicles. Time consuming repair, yes. Difficult, not really, thanks to this video. Dropping a sub frame? First time I ever did that to a car. My intimidation I had before I started the repair is long gone. For those nay-sayers who bag on BMW's because they are expensive and hard to repair, I say open up your mind and learn. There is no other car I enjoy driving as much as my 2007 BMW E 90-N54 (335i with twin turbos). I still laugh every time I drive it. You guys out there that brag about your simple and cheap to fix Toyotas need to drive my car to realize what makes BMW's a great driving experience. Now that I am retired and on a fixed income, I really have to be careful how I spend my children's "inheritance". Did I save a lot of money doing the repair myself, yes. But the knowledge and confidence I gained from your help, priceless.

I'm a pretty capable home mechanic, in fact ready to R&R the cylinder head on my other '94 5 Series 525's. Did this job 10 years prior until the damn thermostat failed in a closed position, overheating the engine and well, you all know what happens then. No Bueno! This video is extremely helpful as I need to tackle the infamous oil leak on my '03 E39. I too will watch this as many times as it takes and make notes. It does look intimidating but I've done more complicated repairs and the truth is, once I go in a begin a job and carefully observe how everything is assembled, it becomes easier. That and laying in bed before falling asleep and running everything through my mind until it's imprinted in my brain, lol

Important details in case you miss them by clicking around the video are: 1. Clean out the oil pan bolt holes with a bottoming tap or rethreading tap to clean out the old sealant that was used on the bolts, otherwise you risk stripping the new aluminum bolts as I did. Tap size is 8mm x 1.25mm. 2. Replace the aluminum oil pan bolts, but if you are gonna be "that guy" and reuse them, make sure you put sealant about 1/2 inch or 12 mm from the tip of each bolt. 3. Let the subframe dangle, no need to remove it completely. No need to disconnect the steering linkage or loosen the lower control arms. 4. Use zip ties to hold the gasket onto the pan when reinstalling, then cut the zip ties before you completely tighten the bolts. 5. Add medium strength threadlocker to your power steering pump bracket bolts to prevent them loosening up, backing out, and causing your belt to slip and shred.

In the past on other projects I have used a paint marker and marked one "tooth" of a torx bolt against the surface it is mating to then another on the outside of my socket. Then I set back my socket one tooth so when I tightened the bolt as soon as I made a solid line I had damn close to 60 degrees angle. 6 teeth set 60 degrees apart makes it super easy with torx style bolts.

Props to you sir for the skill shown in this video, your analytical comments, and for your contribution to the DIY community. Your sponsor - OEMbimmerparts - has good prices too. With your video along with ISTA/D I was successful in making this repair on engine N52 in U.S. version 2008 128i/E82, left-hand drive vehicle with 179,000 miles on the odometer. I performed a complete oil pan gasket replacement along with motor mounts, serpentine belt, water pump, and thermostat that took me several days to complete. The old gasket was date coded 2007 and exhibited the hardening especially in the lower right-hand side towards the rear. The original water pump, dated 2007, was functioning fine and the right hand motor mount had collapsed by about 10mm. I also replaced some hoses in the area of the water pump due to swelling. If I may share some experience for others benefit: 1.) Torque angles are easily approximated by knowing the number of teeth in a full revolution of the ratchet wrench. After initial torque is achieved just count the clicks when backing the ratchet and continuing to tighten the bolt. Typical ratchet teeth numbers are 24 and 36, so 90 degree rotation is achieved by counting either 6 or 9 clicks, respectively. 2.) The N52 motor in E82 does not require the underbody cross braces or the power steering pump to be removed. Finally all I can say is it was one heck of a job but I'm glad to be able to do the work myself. With videos like this I feel I was able to get a quality job with reliable results plus improvements along the way like replacing various mounting clips and a complete inspection of the engine bay to find other problems that might be lurking in the future. The cost of having this done professionally would have been prohibitive. Many thanks - Captain Tim, Tampa, FL

Under warranty they had to do it two more times and the last time they replaced the plastic pan with an aftermarket metal one which fixed it. The mechanic owns the same car as mine (2012 328i). I'm planning well ahead to do this job. I recently did the M3 control arms upgrade so my control arms are actually ball joints at the subframe, so I won't have to loosen them like you did. However there's still the tension struts forward of those. You're supposed to loosen those too when you drop the steering knuckle to take the shocks out...do you think you might risk straining the rubber bushings letting the subframe hang on them? I'm thinking not because it's actually closer to "ride height" from the bushings' perspective. Also, if you want to torque to angle, it's very easy if you have a marker. Think about it - if you have a hex / e-torx bolt, there are six points along the circle, 360/6 = 60 degrees apart. Mark one of the "corners" and for 90 degrees, skip one corner and mark next to the bolt halfway between two. For 60 degrees, mark at the next corner. For 180 directly at the opposite corner, etc. Then just line them up. This is extra nice for suspension components etc where you probably want to use a long bar to angle them.

I had a hard time getting the oil plug off when doing the change and when I put it back on I didn't want to tighten it like the last guy had so I only did it moderately tight. I decided to try tightening the oil drain plug more and the oil leak stopped. So check your drain plug s it's right at the same area.

I did not watch this before doing the job. I am "that guy" who reused the bolts and did not put sealant on them. Now it leaks. I do not know it is from the rear main seal or from the gasket. The only reason we put in thread sealant is if the thread holes are thru holes. They are not (as I have another N54 block I checked by filling oil into each thread hole. Oil stays in the hole.) IF the holes were thru, oil from crankcase will run down thru the thread and into the copper portion and drip out from the corner. But the holes are not thru. Why sealant is needed? Jason, u specifically say it will leak at 8:00. How did u know? Also another question is which part of the gasket is actually doing the sealing? The copper part or the inner gasket part? I am just trying to see the path the oil sips thru so that I can plan my next action.

They leak not because of bad rubber, but because BMW convinced buyers 15k mile intervals which would destroy any gasket due to hardening. If you change oil every 4k, you reduce leak potential by over 50%. Nothing is forever, but shorter oil interval changes help keep the rubber conditioned longer and the don't leak as soon.

Worn motor mounts usually shake anything that rests on the valve cover (a wrench and what not) They usually affect 6 speed more on downshifts especially if you don’t rev match. I tore a belt testing a car before buying it lol.

Wish they made a better pan gasket

Great video! What did you use to clean everything under the car? That looked pretty nice afterwards. Only thing I would add is I believe you're supposed to torque them in a pattern starting in the center and working your way towards the front/rear of the pan.

They do actually run hotter by design i'm sure for emissions or something, typical target coolant temps are 105-108deg C as opposed to 90-92 deg. which is stupid when most of the components are made mostly of plastic. Can be adjusted in the tune using the MHD suite to run at a cooler temp. im sure this contributes to the failure of the gasket, but I mean rubber is better than cork...I guess?

Hi. Very informative. Thank you for the video. I have a 2011 f10 with N55 RWD. Will this be the same for my car? Thank you again.

Holy Crap……. For an oil pan gasket. You’re a killer! I’ll let it leak😎

I have a lexus ls430 2001 with the original oil pan gasket. My lexus ls430 2001 has 334000 miles original engine and transmission. Changed the timing belt 3 times with new denso spark plugs and serpentine belt. Just regular maintenance brake pads and new fluids.

too bad lexus doesn't drive like BMWs.
@andrewvillanueva37223 жыл бұрын
@@javarithms as long as it stands on the road and I don't hear outside noise i am good. You can have those 2000.00 brake jobs. Where everything need to be replaced. While I pay 200.00 for all 4 brakes.

Good explanation and details, thank you. Are BMWs hard to work on? What about Mercedes and Audi? Which one is easier ?
@50sKid3 жыл бұрын
I think BMWs are really easy to work on. I think Mercedes are as well but I haven’t worked on many of those. I hear some Audis are a nightmare

My n52 5251 oil pan gasket was leaking through 5 maby 6 bolts .i tightened them up a touch and only 1 may be leaking now. Engine was producing a lot of preasure in valve cover .i took it for a few good trips and now have no preasure . So hopefully next check may have no oil pan leak .🤞🖖
