Azelf being able Explosion is probably due to the fact that Uxie and Mesprit also get moves that KO itself as their last level up moves, those being Memento and Healing Wish respectively, and Azelf being the most offensive of the trio is probably why it gets Explosion. A lot of these moves that seem odd actually do have an explanation: 22. Bulbasaur is not actually using Whirlwind in the Japanese version. Whirlwind is known as "Blow Away" in Japan, and thus when Ash told his Bulbasaur to blow something away it was translated as him commanding it to use Whirlwind. 23. Smoochum's sprite in Gold & Silver was rather intimidating and mean looking, so it made perfect sense to give it Mean Look 38. Helping Hand doesn't mention anything about hands in the original Japanese and is simply called "Help" 42. Pay Day in Japanese is "Coin For a Cat". Hoppip is most definitely based on a cat, which is a lot more obvious in its beta design, and even has neko in its Japanese name, Hanekko. Pretty much every cat Pokemon can learn payday, which is why Hoppip can 48. Noble Roar's name in Japan is "War Cry", which does make a little bit more sense

Ngl, what's funny and extremely useful is that magikarp can learn hydro pump in shield and sword, it can use bounce since that's what it's known for but it can't learn dive. For a fish who can bounce it's a way to the top of the mountain and then back down to the ground but can't dive underwater, it's really amazing how it hasn't gone extinct.

One of my favs is fire punch ludicolo. And some of the biggest missed opportunities is crabhammer on gliscor,parasect lines, and scizor. They DEFINITELY could use the water type coverage
