It is a relief to finally find some one that understands cost per mile as well as what it takes to do OTR. Regardless of the type of vehicle you drive. You are so right on these low balers . Like CJ said you have to understand that everybody's expenses are different, but to a certian degree you should never take it if you are going to have to pay to move it! Are you leased to a company or do you have your own authority?

As long as you are contracted for/with someone else then you are voluntarily obligated to them. That’s the expedited norm. I’ve preached this many times; get out there and create your own contacts and contracts. No it’s not easy, but it’s rewarding. You won’t land big corporation contracts, but ‘mom & pop’ companies/factories may surprise you. Safe Travels!!!

I'm speaking specifically to those operating as a carrier, not owner operators. These are rates from brokers to a carrier. I agree with you that building direct customers is the best option.

Mr Allen, May the load gods keep you rolling and all of the rubber tires continue to make you money. Do you feel that the industry is slowly self destructing? The ethics of some of these carriers are starting to get very scary.

I'm surprised that Circle posted that Ben and his team are typically good on rates; but then again I'm not surprised given the carriers unawareness of what this stuff actually moves for. In addition, Sylectus is going to the gutter due to access sharing. I strongly advise to seek/ research other options ( ie. Full Circle TMS) Stay Safe, Stay Blessed.

While the brokers have responsibility for the rates they post, I suspect the shipper will never know what the load went for. It may be one of the reasons you see such low rates. In many cases, I've just cut out the "cut rate" brokers.

@@dennismisovski9932 Hi Dennis. For me, I just stop doing business with them. After spending a little bit of time in the business you will realize which guys will really try to squeeze you literally for $3 to $5. That happened to me recently. So they are off my list. Also, brokers who dont tell you a load is one you have to assist with and wont pay you for driver assist. Those are a couple of examples. But I think you get the idea.

You should base your cost on the federal mileage rate because that's what you deduct on your taxes. A business should make a profit after expenses. You should also be able to pay yourself a salary and still have a profit afterward for the business. If you can't do that, you're not running a business, you are running a non-profit.

My thought is that all employers have a responsibility to their employees to provide a livable wage. If the parking lot is full of 20 year old junk cars with 2 BMW’s up front, we can tell what their priority is!

I dispute that the broker should ethically price something at or above a given price point, aside from that for which someone will do it. That's how capitalism works. If they can't cover it at a low price, they have to come up until someone does. Does it suck for the driver? Yes, but when capacity is tight, then it sucks for them instead of us. The pendulum swings.
@EverythingApax
@EverythingApax Жыл бұрын
I understand where you're coming from,and I know the easy opposition to ethics is saying it's capitalism. In business, there are guidelines and laws in place because it isn't simply capitalism free for all. There is responsibility to be taken by all involved.

As you mentioned everyone is trying to maximize their profits. That includes brokers AND drivers. Like it or not Brokers duty is first and foremost to their customers - not to drivers. It's like my momma used to say when I was a kid "sometimes it just be that way." Those who cannot competitively bid and get loads need to consider getting out of the business.
