55 Chevy Gasser Disc Brake Upgrade - Cheaper than Drums

In this video I did a front disc brake conversion on my 55 Chevy Belair. The kit came from Speedway Motors and ended up being cheaper than re-doing the stock front drums. So better braking power for less money, that's a win-win. Simple kit just uses GM A body rotors and calipers with a custom bracket to make it all work.

I have a similar kit on my 56. They work great! Hopefully all the linkage clears the pan. You know the snowball effect when modifying cars. I have to replace the rear spring bushings have them in hand but haven't done it yet. Will follow along to see how you make out. I was able to get my backup lights working on the 56 this weekend. Little cutting on the freshly painted column. Added a new wiring harness and switch. So cool seeing those little lights come on. After so many years. Lot of work but so satisfying. 😎

Looking good i used the right stuff kit it used smaller metric calipers and mounted to rear of spindle. I used bracket kit from Danchuk on my other car looked just like your kit. Both seem to work the aame so far will know more next month plan on doing alot of driving. I posted some videos on my youtube channel

A better zero offset design would be to use 61 Chevy roller bearing hubs and 79 trans am rear rotors. Did it to my 57 and love it.

Don’t use the races that are installed in the rotors. Use the ones on the bearings that come with the kit.

What is best kind of brake booster for these heavy Chevys? I bought a single diagram one and its hard to stop. Are the dual diagram ones much better?

U can use 64 Chevy Impala. Top ball joints on ur 55 aframes they. Will fit right in place and they don't have that tall top sticking out and u will have better inside Rim clearance

Update: Stupid me I didn't know you used the original spindles with this disc set up. Years ago (many) you had to use a spindle from a B body car (or was is it an A body ) and buy a tapered ream so the stock tri five ball joints would be used to work with the later spindles.

Yeah they made it waaay easier now. The only change you need to do is the hole for the cutter pin needs to be re drilled. I guess the brake is a little wider than the stock drum stuff.

@@RichieCat4223 yeah factory are ball bearings you can use later model hubs with roller bearings from 60s model chevy and keep drums danchuk speedway and others sell new hubs. The disc kits use 1970--72 chevelle ss rotors and 73 and up calipers, i just installed kit using gbody calipers or sometimes called metric think from malibus or cutlass late 70 to early 80s. Im thinking about buying the roller bearing hubs and put vette brakes rotor and calipers but will have to fabricate a bracket
