Martijn, for your next Q& A, can you please explain to us the protocols for those who come and stay with you and help you out? Where do they sleep? Do they bring food or other things you need? How long can they stay? And do you get lots of tourists who come to meet you unannounced thinking they can stay with you for free? I would imagine you do! This would be an interesting thing for us to know. Thank you, love you from Canada!

When you stopped to drink some meltwater on your hike near the end of this video, I was reminded of a couple lines from one of my favourite poems, by Gary Snyder, "Mid-August at Sourdough Mountain Lookout". "...drinking cold snow water, Looking down for miles through high, still air."

While you might think that the French drain originated in France, the name derives from its inventor, Henry Flagg French, a farmer from New England USA, born in 1813. Today, it’s known as the French drain. A little more research; Henry’s belief that standing water created disease inspired his trip to the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. Once he returned, he published a book titled “Farm Drainage” in 1859, and it is considered the definitive research text on drainage (I bet you didn’t know there was one!). Henry explored a variety of different drainage techniques that were popular back then-the Deanston System, the Keythorpe System, and the Wharncliffe System. Henry also examined different styles and sizes of pipes and measured their efficacy at getting rid of water. The conclusion of his book resulted in the invention of the French drain, an excavated trench that is filled with gravel and a perforated pipe that serves to carry away accumulated water.

Martijn - Late season, it's good to throw down some wood chips or straw on the slick walkways. Spare your bony structure and makes good compost or mulch. It's easy to pick up afterwards if you use straw. Anything works; pine needles. You have been scaring me. Amazing job. so dirty. It looks like the gutters are going! Lucky on your perch.

Hi Martjian. The KZbin algorithm surely tells you many things, but you may not realize the range of your audience: my 89-year-old mother is one of your fans. She's never done construction in her life, but the editing, scenery, and pace of your films captivate her. The only part she doesn't like is when you get too close to the rock ledge to look at the view. Perhaps your mom feels the same way? Thank you for sharing your gifts.

Martjn, you are quite good at painting. SERIOUSLY it is good enough to sell. I watch you everytime you upload a video. I love your place and it is really coming along nicely..I don't usually add comments, but when I saw your painting, I just had too. Not that you have a lot of time, but there are 2 KZbinrs that bought some land in Portugal and they made a cute house out of a barn too. They recently purchased another home on land in Portugal too. I have watched them since the ought their land. They are in the countryside too, and have chickens, and goats and 2 cats. They have been driving all around and living in their Caravan, until they got this property. Now all of their time goes into the building of their barn turned house and redoing their newest home. Anyway, just thought I would drop you a line and let you know how much I enjoy watching you every week. Must be hard working in the snow too. Spring is just around the corner. If you would like to watch the other couple in Portugal and what they have done to their place, they are indie Project.. harry one and I cannot wait to see more of your paintings. Just beautiful and your place is perfect for doing landscapes..Thanks for reading my comment..Judy from California

I used to watch the Indie Project. They caught my attention bc they were so cheerful, upbeat and had this fun project….. somehow uplifting. But… the honest first feeling I got from them was as if they were my tourguides in a city, showing their trendy (vegan, superfood😂😂😂😂lifestyle). When I found Martijn I unscribed from the IndieProject. I was done with the happyclappy atmosphere and repetitive formula of videography. … I realized I am in love with the authentic pure artistry by Martijn. No emotional happy stuff. Just realness.

We're following your videos from the beginning and enjoying a lifestyle completely unlike our own. We live where we just went through 96 days without rain and temperatures reaching 110 degrees F. It is so relaxing, after spending a morning working our small homestead, to come in and see mountains, rain, snow, or fall color. We live in a flat land so your hills/mountains are lovely to see. We love our prairie living but it is pleasant to have a contrast and to watch someone work who understands the concept of doing it right or not doing it at all. Thank you for taking the time to put these videos together.

Martijn, I admire your persistence and attention to detail in whatever your doing with the stone house, your paintings, your filming and editing, it’s all art to me. Your helpers were Really amazing and hard workers and got a ton of work done. I love it when you called out “Coffee” for a break. That keeps me going in the winter time too.Keep up the great work your making real progress.

Discussion about sewage pipes in Polyethylene and rubber couplings (muffs): As long as you remember to connect the parts so that its never running against the muff- there shouldnt be a issue- this would be safer than gluing since PE like other materials likes to "breathe" and expand/shrink in size therefore glued parts might crack, sewage also is warmer and especially when connected to a tank which will generate gass and warmth it is better to have some leeway Loving the vids, greetings from Norway :D

I’m going to criticize the sewer line underneath the foundation wall. You should have been used both of the pipes, the gray and the orange one. In between you could spray some close pore expansion foam. Now if there are sone soil movements your orange pipe will crack and you will have to break the concrete. Those were my 50 cents. But you still got all the respect that you deserve.

I have been a big fan of Martijn ever since I saw "Two Year on a Bike". Your story and cinematography are breath taking. You have such a great artistic eye that really draws me into your work. I am a painter and have taught for many years and absolutely impressed and love the paintings that you are doing in your story. I would love to come to Italy and see your beautiful homestead that you are creating. Bravo, you are a master story teller!!!

You'll think about these strong young men after they are gone! Every time you marvel at the dry lower level you will think of them with gratitude. As with all the episodes, this one moved me in SO many ways. My noted thought or the week was "Uh oh! "After a long hard day at work you turn to the painting. This is a new passion developing. And it is a strong one. Thank goodness, you have found the thing that will remain.
