I'm doing final work on levelling and fixing the beams and repairing all the holes in the wall. It's a rainy week, which means fresh mushrooms.

A few days ago I finally got up to date, having watched all the previous episodes whenever I got the chance. I have the same feeling I got when I got to the end of Lord of the Rings and wanted more, more! So it was exciting to watch a fresh episode, knowing that this was what had transpired just a few days ago. Hearing the cow bells, watching the cloud and mist undulating and swirling over the mountains. So majestic, so beautiful it almost hurts! I’m 73 years old so being able to see the Alps through your eyes is an experience I would never have were in not for your inspired vlogs. I live in Japan where everything is much more controlled - at least in the populated areas. Thank you for sharing your wild life. You’ve definitely influenced my outlook on life. Even at my age there’s much to learn! When I saw the mess in the cottage and all the tools being used I wondered how it could possibly be ready for habitation this winter. But even in a week you’ve made such progress. I’m on the edge of my chair with anticipation for next week’s work. Good luck with it all, and thank you again!

And we make him very rich everyday . He travels ,he buys expensive things .This come all from us . I will stop watch because he is so lazy . He always shows only tomatoes, etc .and when you promise tranfomation of old cabine we fans of constructions want to see constructions. He works only when people come to visit and all work for free and make him more rich with likes . The rest is only walking in the same place showing the same ticket , talking about something that he doesn't do it . Slow motion work . No focus ,no concentration . Martini…a camping tip from the north country where I live. When we go camping, we each find a rock about the size of a small loaf of bread, making sure it’s not from the river or near it (you don’t want to heat up a water logged stone), we place them right next to the fire so they soak up the heat. When ready for bed, we wrap the hot stone in a hand towel, and shove it to the bottom of our sleeping bag. The stone will radiate a beautiful, cozy heat throughout the night against your feet. In fact, the stone will still be warm in the morning. You can do the same, by placing a stone (or two!) on your stove in the early evening.

Those screws in the T-anchors on the end of your floorbeams are important structural elements and should be dimensioned properly. Their job is to keep the anchors rigid to the beams so you won't introduce a momentum/leverage into the brickwork. Don't underestimate this part....

Yeah. I would have added an upper iron plate, bolted to the lower T piece through the wooden beam. I think it would have been much stronger that way, avoiding risks of instability for the wall.

Structurally those anchors are only good on long term to stop horizontal movement, they are simply too short to carry the full weight of a floor.. It could easily be remedied by either making them longer and securing them really well to the wooden structure or using the cut up beams as pillar, resting on the concrete wall. The latter being the best option.

When your bell peppers have the brown spots on bottom and are thin walled adding a calcium amendment to your soil will help the peppers and tomatoes. The green house will be such a blessing to you. To see how far you have come with the walls amazes me. Love how the grass you sowed has flourished. Your mountain shots give a very peaceful feeling to the viewer. TY. My father was a finish carpenter and jack of all trades. Our homes were always in a state of some kind of remolding. I remember all the wood piles he had collected from other jobs. I always wondered why some of the artists of the past always seemed to have a hazy foggy cast to their backgrounds---and seeing your foggy clouds hugging the mountains, I can see why! There is always this hazy quality to the air (and paintings) that is mysterious and kind of spooky, in a way I guess. Dear Martijn, unfortunately I see that things are going slowly. And I understand that alone it is very difficult and the works are carried out very slowly. We are already at the end of September and with these deadlines even the cabin will not be finished in time and you will have to live in the cold again this winter. I'm very sorry about this, because seeing you work in the cold with so much snow last year was painful. I hope you have some other friends who can help you finish at least the walls of the cabin, the staircase and the wood stove so you can sleep warmly. Then you can calmly finish everything else. Good work.

At the minimum he has six weeks to get the stove going inside the house, before the snow comes. But the freezing might also still take two months. All in all you and we don’t know. I’m sure he’ll handle it. Even with snow outside, the work inside can still progress. Relax, it’s his responsibility.

@melindastclair and @Spiegelvoorelkaar, I'm not desperate. I know perfectly well what Martijn did in her life, he told all of us. We all know that he is a strong man, but that doesn't mean that it's nice to work with half a meter of snow at 3, 4, 5 degrees below zero. The mountains in winter are tough despite having a home. Living in a tent in the snow I think is difficult for everyone. And from what he said this summer, I think he had hopes of spending the winter inside the cabin. I worked in the mountains for over 10 years where people skied. And I know what I'm saying: living at zero degrees all day and even at night, despite the sleeping bag, would be hard for everyone. Because it's one thing to stay in the cold during work and then stay warm in the evening, and another thing to stay in the cold all day and all night.

Pointing the walls: One week with the help of his friends. Installing the oven: another week or two. Floorboards upstairs: A day or two. Windows: A few days. Floor downstairs: A few days. = Ready to move in temporarily. All the electric and water installations can follow in the winter. He can still cook/ shower/ use the loo outdoors. Seems like it's not impossible to be in the (of course not completely finished) cabin before the first snow!

Enjoyed this week’s video as I always do. The mix of work, the cows, the chickens, cheese, foraging for mushrooms, a nap, firewood prep and ending with a fire delighted the eye and told the story of the harmony of your daily life. The warning about the mushrooms was both apt and timely with Australia agog with 4 recent Death Cap mushroom poisonings resulting in 3 fatalities and a potential murder investigation. We’re all aghast. 😱

Hi Martin🎉 beautiful day here in Lago Maggiore after a week of rain , probably one of my last swims in the lake this season. The water is very high. I can see snow on the far Alps and it's definitely mushroom season. Nice to have your video to inspire me to get out and forage for mushrooms on the hills

This sounds amazing! Last autumn I had my last swim at the Lido in Ascona the first week of November! It was a very warm week but one night snow fell and the next day the lake was freezing cold! I couldn’t agree more, although I’d probably prefer even fewer. 🫨 I chuckled when you talked of those bells. So glad you are wearing a mask when you mix your mortar. Save those lungs! You talked about leaving the holes that are up high; they do look nice. I have a question, are the holes open all the way through? Surely they can’t be. I always notice the bird platform feeder you built, was it last year? Do you have seed eating birds there on your mountain in the cool and winter months when no natural food is available for them? You can also offer them mealworms. If you do have them it would be nice to feed them. You could put a cam on the feeder and see if you get any to come. Was that a broken plate in the stone wall hole? Is that like the shoe you found? Wonder why they did things like that. Winter is coming, getting firewood ready. Your cabin is looking so nice Martijn, you should be so proud! Very exciting! Maybe its an idea to have a ground heated ventilation greenhouse. It should give a more stable temperature during night and day. If you have enough overburden you can put these pipes in the ground. Also you can have a sunken greenhouse that does not stand as high, and thus is less susceptible to damage due to high winds. Martijn, I would like to see you invest in a half-face respirator with P100 filters to protect you from all of the silica dust. You have so much work still to do. Wire brushing out old grout. Mixing new grout. You need to protect your lungs. It adds up. And you would be demonstrating good health and safety practices for your audience….and save some lungs…..including yours. My friends are out of town, so I go deep into the woods of South Dakota to feed their livestock. The stream cutting through the pasture, that I have to cross to get to the horses, (and get my feet wet, makes the most lovely babbling song. The hazy day, just like you are having, lays a grayness over the trail of damp soil strewn with Chestnut tops everywhere; eaten by squirrels, horses, white tail deer and wild turkeys. Male turkeys are everywhere hiding in ravenes and thick foliage because hunting season is here. The deer leap out of sight when we come into sight. Watching you today reminded me that you are very blessed, and so are my friends. And I got a taste of it today.

It is sad to think if hunting season. But we have problems with over population, and many deer starve to death or die if disease. It is best for some of them to be used to feed a hungry family at this time of year.
