I stood where you are filming most years in 1959/60/61/62/63/64 as a wee lad watching the A4s and A3s

I always remember as a kid in the 60's, the acceleration from standstill of some of the deltics was amazing compared to steam locomotives. A shame more of these were not constructed.

When I think of a train, this is the image that comes to mind. No wonder I loved watching these things when I was a lad.

With 3300 hp under the mid section produced from two Napier Deltic Two Stroke Opposed Diesel Engines and with a top speed of over 100 mph... Lovely Jubbly... However I used to drive the 43's out of Kings X up the ECML... With 4500 hp under the bonnet ( 2250 hp ) one up front and one up the botty there was plenty of power on tap... Pulling out of the station on notch five with the Paxman Valenta turbo's screaming their little heads off and clouds of exhaust smoke ( sorry Greta Thunberg ) was something to behold with more excitement to enjoy... 125 mph here we come although they would top 148 mph... Now there is food for thought but as I did not fancy tea and biscuits with the Boss well need I say more..

I built many of the early Valenta engines (RP200) for the BR contract. I miss the sound of full load (notch five when in a loco) being dropped onto it and the Napier turbo whistle increasing in pitch until just a 'hiss'.

Since when did a Deltic need a shove from the back?
@justinfoulger10 жыл бұрын
The 57 wasn't pushing, it was just used for ECS moves.
@RobMirage7 жыл бұрын
Isn't that an awful lot of useless extra weight to be pulling? I don't suppose 117 extra tons makes a lot of difference once the thing is moving???
@ChangesOneTim5 жыл бұрын
@@RobMirage top and tail for railtours is the normal way unless they are heading for places that have run-round/ loco release facilities. True, it's equivalent to pulling three extra coaches but operators take that into account.

What a pity about the lack of faith on the rear end!!
@ChangesOneTim5 жыл бұрын
@@leegorman8322 No, it's top and tail working with the rear loco not powering. It makes reversing/ change-ends moves easier, especially as so many places nowadays lack run-round or loco release facilities. In emergency of course, they can assist and they can be insurance in case the hauling loco fails completely.
