Man that stuff works great. I just used it a few minutes ago. It took less than a couple of minutes in a jar shaking and now the copper is sparkling again. Thanks George.

Citric Acid is available at my walmart year round, used to be seasonal. Its over in the canning supplies if they have it.
@richardlafford13974 жыл бұрын
Buy it by the Kg on Amazon and it's much less expensive.
@quarlow12154 жыл бұрын
Some folks don't live just around the corner from Wal-Mart. So till you can get citric acid juice works great. And it's actually cheaper here.

Short and sweet thanks George I've been using this mixture for a while now and it works great on copper turns a nice blue color so you that's it's working.

Used this stuff yesterday, works awesome. That said, I used it in an old crockpot I keep the shop for such, and the pieces of copper being cleaned also contained some silver soldered sections, and some brass fittings..........Both those cleaned up as well. Info: The last two metals mentioned I found to be more reactive in the mixture, and the copper oxide removed during the cleaning, deposited itself on the yellow brass, totally changing it's look!

Good info. George. It would be interesting for you to do a presentation on bacterial contamination and fermentation problems thereof. In an industrial production setting, bacteria problems gave us fits...that along with evaporation problems with stillage. Also, for those that use city water, is there an upper limit for chlorine residual? Or maybe doing some de-chlorination of make-up water.
@richardlafford13974 жыл бұрын
You can de-chlorinate water easily by simply letting it sit for a day or two at room temperature.

If you don't have Citric acid just use a couple of ounces of lemon juice. Like the Real Lemon stuff. Don't know if it works as well because I haven't tried citric acid yet, but it works well with juice.
@richardlafford13974 жыл бұрын
Lemon juice (citric acid) will certainly work but is several time more expensive than plain citric acid.

This doesn't take the place of a vinegar run, correct? For a pot still, this would just be for cleaning the surface and not running through the still. Am I correct?

Instead of citric acid , I use baking soda and get that good ole volcano effect we learned when we were kids. Works great !!!
@BarleyandHopsBrewing4 жыл бұрын
Baking soda will raise the PH which is a way to adjust the PH from acidic to base. The opposite of citric acid.

What are we looking for 551 to do? Make it shining? Clean all the gunk out or off? What about a classic StarSan and water mixture? Will that work?

Hi George, I have question for you unrelated to this video.Hope you don’t mind.I am making Breadfruit Vodka and I cook down the Breadfruit as one would do with potatoes to convert the starches into sugars. However Breadfruit ripen to a mush really fast in a day or two. My question is George..has the Starches in the Breadfruit naturally converted into sugars? I plan on doing a batch without cooking them down and see what happens. Got any Ideas? Best Regards, Bret

George, I have a Turbo500 with the copper coulomb. Do I need to remove the stainless steel media from inside before using 551? Being lazy, I’d like to be able to place the whole thing in the solution to soak.
@richardlafford13974 жыл бұрын
Won't hurt the stainless. I use stainless packing in my copper column and just fill the whole column with 551.

Citric Acid 1 ounce? By volume, or by weight???
@northgeorgiastillcustomerc98143 жыл бұрын
Curious about this also
@lukejosselyn77063 жыл бұрын
Considering George is about to give the "millilitres" volume for it but can't remember what it is off the top of his head I'm guessing it's by volume. Not that it matters much either way since they work out to be pretty much the same thing.

Hi George, after I soak the copper column in the 551 mixture do I need to soak it in a bi-carb soda mixture to neutralise or is rinsing with warm soapy water enough? Cheers.
@BarleyandHopsBrewing4 жыл бұрын
Just rinse it with warm soapy water

George, What's the purpose of using the Hydrogen peroxide vs just water and citrus acid. I have been using 1 lb of citrus acid to 5 gal of water and soaking inside of my boiler. So far no issue but I have only done this a few times to clean the inside. Am I dodging a bullet long term by only running water and C.A.?
@BarleyandHopsBrewing5 жыл бұрын
It is a catalyst.

Hello. With the 551 cleaning solution, it is not only here that the percentage (%) of the hydrogen peroxide content is constantly forgotten. Is it e.g. 3% / 12% / 30%? That makes a difference in the effect and also when buying! From 12% personal protective measures are necessary and at 30% this is no longer fun! That in many ways !! ;-) MD
@lucas134764 жыл бұрын
How would u figure that up for a 20 gallon pot?
@richardlafford13974 жыл бұрын
You'll find that you don't need to fill the pot but can swab the mixture on the surfaces for a few minutes and that will do a pretty good job. If the pot is badly contaminated then filling it might be the solution. Get your calculator out and multiply all the ingredients by 20.
