Incredible! I don't think I've ever seen a model of these ever!!! Are those adapted 377 cabs on the front?.. I need to stock up on 170s to do some of my conversions!

Hi. Yes, the cabs were adaptedd 377 cabs. It's the closest thing I could find given that nothing on this model is specific for a 458/5. The 170s got quite expensive on Ebay, especially as you need centre cars that are in shortest supply!

How did you make this class 458 and did you use trains?

Hi Kieran. The sides and ends of the body were from Bachmann class 170 Turbostars and the roof was from Hornby Mk4 carriages (I managed to get these as spares). The Mk4 roof comes integral with the glazing so this element ha to be removed. The cabs were actually resin Electrostar cabs. The cowling was trimmed off and the windows were amended to make them an equal size. This left a gap between the top of the bodywork and the roof which was filled and shaped with filler. A late addition was the airconditioning units (hence they stand a little proud and these were cut from the roof pieces of the Turbostar units. The underside of the cab was made from various pieces of plastic from the Evergreen range. I did make a fifth carriage to finish the unit off but found that it didn't fit on the layout on the tracks I wanted to use it so stopped work part way through.

I also used the chassis of the Bachmann class 170. I used the powered centre car in one of the intermediate carriages. All other chassis were formed using those from the driving cats and swapping the bogie frames at the cab end for one that will take an NEM pocket on the intermediate carriage. The only amendment to the engine was the hard wiring of a DCC decoder

How did you get the cabs fro used Class458

@@kieranhands4926 Hi Kieran. The cabs are much like the rest of the model in that it isn't actually a 458 cab. I purchased a bulk load of Electrostar cabs from James Makin (he made some for his models which he runs on his club's layout Loftus Road). Cabs sometimes come up on Ebay, latterly by somebody else. The cabs do need tidying up For example, when they come out of the mould, resin infills the windows so this needs to be cut out. However, the windows on the Electrostar are not the same height whereas on the 458 they are. So the next job was to increase the size of the front windows. then, the front cowling needed to be cut away as this does not exist on the 458. The final amendment came when the cab and roof were stuck in place. the roof is slightly higher and there is a gap on show. This needed to be filled and the roof of the cab subsequently reprofiled to suit. I hope this helps. Paul.

Part of it is. The cab is a modified Electrostar. The bodysides are from the longer Turbostars and the roof is from the Hornby mk4 coach. Unfortunately there is nothing, not even the cab, that is available OO for a class 458/5 so this is the best I can do.

Hi. The base model was the Bachmann class 170. The roof was removed and the airconditioning pod was cut out and re-used (this was an afterthought so sits a bit proud of the roof whereas it should be flush). The roof is taken from the original tooling of the Hornby Mk4 coaches. The roof section includes the glazing so this section needs to be cut off. There is a gap between the roof and the bodysides so it needs to be filled. The cab is an amended Electrostar cab with the windows increased in size and the front cowling removed. The interior is from the class 170 with the seats removed and realigned. The seats come in pairs and some of them are cut in half to portray the single seats adjacent to the doors. Hi. The cab is a one piece resin cab for and Electrostar made by James Makin. He originally made the cabs for his own project but briefly sold batches to the public, I have take a pairs of cabs, removed the underside and made the front windows slightly bigger. I also removed the light detail too. The light clusters were home made transfers which were made using a picture of the cab front. Unfortunately, the slight diagonal nature of the cab sides is not evident but to make it look like the sides stood proud of the cab front I cut some grooves into the edge of the cab front area. In short, the way I built the whole model involved nothing from a class 458 because there was nothing available!. If you're interested in an Electrostar cab I believe they can be found 3D printed on Shapeways.
