In this video, I demonstrate the process of removing and installing the M117 timing chain tensioner. Additionally, I offer a technique for removal that can minimize the risk of stripping your engine block. If you're interested in supporting this project, please consider subscribing to my KZbin channel.
This video covers the timing chain tensioner used in the 84-85 380SE, 82-83 380SEC 81-83, 380SEL, 81-85 380SL, 81-81 380SLC, 86-91 420SEL, 84-85 500SEC, 84-85 500SEL, 86-91 560SEC, 86-91 560SEL, 86-89 560SL and identified by part number 116-050-18-11.

I am documenting every part of the 560SL restoration build . The idea is to end up with the best documented 560SL rebuilds on the Internet.
I want everyone who visits my channel to know about a friend of mine named Tasos. His videos inspire me to be more like him. He is so much better than I am. You can find his KZbin channel at:

Thank you so much Roger. I thought only R107 owners would appreciate my videos. When I first started rebuilding this vehicle I knew I had to document things because I needed to put it all back together at some point. That’s when my KZbin channel was created. Now I have a place to store my video footage and I can share it with others. When you are on the video side of things you look at the restoration differently. It forces you to have a beginning to the end. When you are editing video footage you are reviewing the process again, and again and again and again. Without my videos it would be much harder for me. I hope to do a video today or tomorrow. The reason for the video is to connect with my subscribers and let them know what is going on. I was supposed to go live on Saturday June 8, 2024, but on Friday morning I had severe back pain. It was so bad that I passed out from it. At around 2 am I was rushed to the hospital and I was scheduled for emergency surgery for Saturday afternoon. I was in the operating room ready for the procedure and I was told that the doctor was a no show (I later found out that was a lie). So I had to go to another hospital and I was scheduled for Sunday afternoon. Again I am in the operating room and this time I had surgery. Unfortunately the doctor was unable to complete the surgery. So I went home on Tuesday in pain with no medication. Not fun! Now I am scheduled for surgery on Tuesday to finish what he started on. I’ve been in pain and too tired to do a video follow up. The live stream was for the first start! I expect I will be out for a couple more weeks and then the first start live! I can’t wait to hear it run for the first time since 2008.

Great detail and your method makes great sense. Also appears to be easier and MUCH less risky for stripping threads. 👍🏼

Hot headed Peter from INOVA HIGHTECH Ltd. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fp6loZh4hZiNoacsi=hOVVv_RWrOfDu5Xw&t=35m56s provided inaccurate information regarding the preloading of the timing chain tensioner in the comments below. He mistakenly claimed that the manual instructed preloading, which is not the case. After realizing his error, he childishly deleted our conversation in the comments section. It is irresponsible for him to spread these rumors. To clarify, Peter is unequivocally mistaken. The manual does not advise "preload" for this timing chain tensioner. In fact, attempting to preload this tensioner could complicate the installation process and pose a risk of engine block damage. As explicitly mentioned in the video, the timing chain tensioner used in 84-85 380SE, 82-83 380SEC 81-83, 380SEL, 81-85 380SL, 81-81 380SLC, 86-91 420SEL, 84-85 500SEC, 84-85 500SEL, 86-91 560SEC, 86-91 560SEL, 86-89 560SL, identified by part number 116-050-18-11, does not require preloading.

If someone was concerned about preloading, what about turning the engine over by hand for a revolution. Would that deliver some oil to the tensioner?

Turning it by hand will not work. I hope to show another method in a future video.
