Raw ore coming from blasting deep within the mine was hauled to the surface and was of all different sizes. The raw ore needed to be processed in order to release the precious metals from the host rock. There were many steps needed and taken to release the ore from its host rock. The first step was the reduction in size of the ore bearing rock. Usually the raw ore was sent through a grizzly screen to get a certain uniform sized rock that could enter the milling process. Next, the ore went through a jaw crusher or stamp mill where ore rock was further reduced to a still smaller more uniform size. Once the raw ore was reduced to sand size particles it was then sent through a ball mill where the raw ore was further reduced to silt sized particles by being crushed with rolling steel balls. The silt sized raw ore was then sent to a large vat called a float cell and processed with a water/cyanide solution that was constantly aerated to form a bubbling foam. The very fine particles of precious metals would then attach themselves to the bubbling foam with the heavier metals (lead, zinc) dropping to the bottom of the float cell. Skimmers on top of the float cell would then capture the precious metal laden foam floating in the top of the cell. The skimmers would then be routinely cleaned of precious metal paste and this collection would be dried and considered an ore concentrate. Ore concentrate was then assayed for its percentage of gold and silver content. A ton of raw ore entering the milling process might only result in a recovery of a few ounces and usually less of gold and silver. Concentrated precious metal ore was then smelted at the mine site or sent to a regional smelter where dore' was created. Dore' was then further processed to increase the purity of the gold/silver content. There are many different means of processing precious metal ore, this being one. Your metallurgist at the mine usually determined the best means of precious metal processing.
@TheNewAndyWarhol3 жыл бұрын
That was a wonderful amount of info on the ore processing! Thanks!! You really know your stuff!
@pixelchi3 жыл бұрын
@@TheNewAndyWarhol Thanks Juan! The description is pretty basic and did not include perhaps several more processes for this particular mine. Mercury was mentioned and Mercury was another means of final extraction of the precious metals. All in all, metals mining was a lot more complicated than I described and the old timers knew what they were doing. The metallurgist was really the person who best determined the means and methods of extraction and ore recovery for any particular mine. I hope Sara Jane is careful around these abandoned mine and milling sites as they are dangerous in many ways.
@gordbaker8963 жыл бұрын
Often the ore went to a Bar Mill first . There are 'shelves' inside the mills to lift ore, bars and bores to drop on ore below as it rotates. Mercury was used to precipitate the ore for the skimmers.

One time I was up in the mountains in eastern Utah, and I was listening to other people talking, way over in Colorado! A powerful enough one, can be good for 10 miles or more in open terrain! Might be something to look into, especially if you don't have cell service! Other than that, this is a great video, WH! Love old mining areas!
