This is such a heartbreaking story. Lynch had just won a trial against the US DOJ that he had a 2% chance of winning. He had been under house arrest in the US under armed guards for the last year. RIP for the victims.

Keel was not lowered, therefore the center of gravity was much higher, capsized - ventilation shafts opened so that a lot of water entered, ship sank in 2 minutes said the rescued engineer
@tonys2957Ай бұрын
Will be interested to find out how on earth this capsized ...? I think I heard they lost the mast in the winds ... but that in theory would make it harder to capsize - unless it somehow punctured the hull when it came down. Sailing yachts have a low centre of mass/righting moment - ballast and keel - that should keep them upright. Perhaps some hatches or the swim platform was open allowing water to get into the compartments quickly? Then it would be more of sinking, not a capsize.

At night it is impossible to see the waterspout, but as for the ship, they were woken up by the wind, and some even lowered a lifeboat and fled, but not all had time to abandon the ship, waterspouts if they are strong can lift any object, not to great heights, but it is enough to lift it from one end, then drop it, and if it falls upside down the whirlpool in the water does the rest, creating a kind of vortex
@Timothy_PittАй бұрын
But in that scenario, how is there time to organise liferaft & abandon ship procedures?

That mast really is out of ALL proportion to the rest of the vessel, and as a seasoned sailor I feel it to be totally unnecessary, given it could have (possibly ?) contributed to this disaster. Was it REALLY necessary to have two cross spars carrying all that radar equipment etc ? However, irrespective of the reasons, ANY loss of life is a real tragedy and my heart goes to not only those who were lost but also to their grieving families. A disaster that might well have been avoided 🤔 x x

The mast is 70 something meters. I feel like this incredibly stupid design was a big factor in why the ship capsized and sank. Adding something that tall and heavy surely made the ship unstable.

@@warriors6565high mast = stupid design ? 😂 I would love to see how you design a sailing yacht 😂
@ICGedyeАй бұрын
@@warriors6565 Its not just the mast thats long, but the vessel also had a keel to withstand up 30 tons of wind force being imparted to the sails. water flowing around the keel at speed helps, so that in a static situation the keel would have to be much bigger. Thats unrealistic though, and the sails were obviously furled up. Also when sailing its 11.5 metre width helps to keep the boat stable - a feature that should have prevented a blow-over. This was some storm. You want to see some big boats with huge masts? Checkout J Class yachts.
