Good morning Doc, I just finished rewatching the Remington trans video. I've got a soft spot for the rolling block, it was my first bpc rifle. Mine is not a rare cool version like yours, but a 60's Numrich conversion of a military Remington to a 45-70 sporter. The copper ring thing was very clever, I'd still be scratching my head on how to mitigate that issue. Watching the bore scope reminded me I've got an upcoming colonoscopy appointment! Keep splitin' that firewood, Gp

Great old rolling block! I love cruising through Illion, sometimes I think of what it looked like in the 1850-90’s

After I aquired my Snider Musket and Carbine, this .58 RRB was next on my list. Unfortunately, I never found one. Sure am glad that you did so I could watch this video.

I picked up one about a year ago. I made one cartridge from a brass 24 gauge shotgun shell. I had trouble getting the taper right to chamber. Fired that one case a few times and I have not had time to reform the other 24. Got busy and put it aside. I need to work on it again soon. Thanks for the inspiration.

Hi Lars and welcome aboard. For most of my .58 guns I resize in a Snider die. That gets me close. My gun also wanted the larger diameter rim of a Snider case. The gun was well behaved and a lot of fun to shoot. Happy 4th..........Regards Doc

@@dr.durellshepard398 I don’t have a Snider die but I found a Morse taper socket that is close. I have used rubber O-rings instead of the copper wire to get proper headspace for 43 Spanish. Not critical on size since they compress when you close the breech. I did that for a Peabody instead of a rolling block. Thanks again for the video.

I had to recheck my RB to see what my chambering was because of your video. My gun is most definitely in .58Roberts. I heard some were chamber in Berdan and was hoping mine was when I bought it. I don't have the primer issue though.Good shooting doc, have a good 4th.

Hi Hunter, Hope your shooting is going well. All these early 58s are very confusing as they are very close to one another, but just off enough to negate interchangeability. I believe that my Berdan in a morphed 58 Gatling, as that is the only one I can find with the proper "fat" rim thickness. And a happy 4th to you as well. Regards......Doc

Nice video. .58 cal that is a big bullet going down range. Very convenient that it is a CF. Much easy to reload. There were some really interesting recycling/re-manufacturing done to convert old technology into the new technology of the time. Nice Pileated Woodpecker at the end.

Yes Sir, Big rim fires coupled with the black powder is a lot of extra work. I have a few more conversions I want to shoot, as you say, very interesting developments. As for the Pileated, They built their nest just outside our garden a few years back, so we got to watch them all through raising their chicks, great fun. Regards....Doc

Brilliant video, thank you. Making those cases and applying a free floating copper ring ahead of the rim is quite an operation, Doctor, especially given the patient is thriving. Thank you for the video of the Pileated Woodpecker, they are shy birds in my area, although I hear them calling occasionally.

Hello Mark, Glad you could come along on the shoot. This gun was a surprising and pleasing experience. Very well behaved. As for the Pileated , they raised there family in this tree just behind the garden. We got to watch the entire sequence of nesting and feeding their two little ones. Best wishes for the holiday.......Doc

Another fun video Doc, thanks. I enjoyed use of the borescope too. Its neat to see what's happening inside. I really enjoy shooting my .58 rolling block too. After I had a mold enlarged to cast a .595" diameter minie, it shoots really well.

Hi Steve, The bore scope reassured me that I was ballpark with my cases. My case could be a hair longer as I could see the demarcation line of throat erosion just ahead of my test case. You are the culprit that got me hooked on the 58 Rolling blocks, I really enjoyed your presentation. .................Doc

Much like the snider conversions of enfield muskets they shoot best with .590 to .600 diameter bullets.

Waiting on that Ilion New York plant, to start pumping out those Legendary Pump 7600’s again, and according to them, they should start in the first quarter of 2023! I’ve been hunting with a 760 Game Master .308 since I was 12, and I’m now 34, I just found out it was made at the plant in 1963. I also have a couple 7600s, one is 30-06, and the other is 35 Whelen, and there is no better hunting rifle out there than the 760 or the 7600 period. Remington For Life!

Hey thanks again Doc. This may sound funny but the old timers in my Black Powder Club say cleaning your used Brass with liquid Ultra "Dawn" detergent works the best. I laughed when I first heard that but, then I compared other detergents, and yes they all work, but "Dawn" seemed to work the Best! Maybe my brain just wanted to think that because that is what my members told me or maybe they just wanted to see if I would go out and purchase different detergents and spend money 🤣. I don't know but, I can tell you that "Ultra Dawn" (The Blue Stuff) works Great! Take Care Doc, thanks again.

Hi Jeff, When I was a young guy, they told me to soak them in a gallon of prop wash !!! So one must be careful as to what you go into a store and ask for. I totally agree with you about the blue Dawn, I do use it in my second soak. Happy 4th, shoot something big and noisy ! ....Doc

Doc ((You have solutions for all DR, I really liked the solution for the sheaths with the copper rings. Greetings from Toledo Spain.)) ((Hi Alberto, Perhaps my gun was chambered for our military 58 caliber Gatling gun as that would have the proper rim thickness without the copper rings, but that is a very rare cartridge. Thank you for supporting my channel. Best wishes. Doc))
