Please see both Parts 1 and 2 for the full Burnside story.
- Burnside carbines discussed, Model 3, is fired with conventional cartridges in Part 1.
- Foil cartridges are made near the end of Part 1.
- Foil cartridges are shot in the 4th model carbine in Part 2
- Conventional cartridges are fired in 5th model carbine in Part 2

Great story about Ambrose Burnside and company. I never realized until your video how awkward the extraction and ejection process was. It achieved good sealing at the breach at some cost to rapid fire.

Hi Richard, Thank you for your comment on the Burnside production. It's always easy looking backwards at this time period and saying why did they do such and such. But most of his expansive case was behind the joint he was trying to seal. The sliding rear block section was key to the success of the entire system and when that gets gummed up you can't even open the gun. Regards...Doc

Hi John, Good to hear from you. This video was driving me nuts, I had so much info It was hard to get it organized. There were a couple other Burnside transition models, I think they were just using up parts from a previous run, but I was running out of room on the You-tube servers......Doc

Best videos ever! But i got a tip: Sometimes the aftermarket brasscase problem is NOT that it is to long! 1. Press it down with your thumb, you can tap it softly with a wooden/rubber hammer to. When its seated, can it pass up when closing without moving the springcontrolled part? (Dont know whats it called in english..) If so your cartridge is not to long! Its the bulb that is the problem. Just fasten your case base in your ordinary screwdrivermachine and file top and bottom of the bulb. In 5 minutes you'll have working case! 😊

Hello Martin, and thank you for your kind comment and also your solution for seating stubborn cases. That is a good tip for all to know. I have read historical accounts where the really early cartridges were a little longer that the later ones, which caused problems in the field. Best regards.....Doc

Wow Doc, I'm going to have to watch this one 3 or 4 times to digest all that information. Anxiously awaiting part 2. Does Burnside recoup his fortune? Are Burnside rifles converted to centerfire cartridges? Does someone tell Burnside to shave off those silly sideburns? Stay tuned! Nice work on the carbine crate. Sound ammo build, except for shorting your wife's paint brushes. We all know you will be found out and wish you had purchased your own. Gp

Excellent video as always. I like the explanation of the different models. This is a whose who of firearm designers and industrialists of the mid-1800's. Charles and Issac Hartshorn seem to be 1cousins once removed

A really excellent video! This must have taken a huge amount of research to get to this level of information, I very much like your small precision AOC drill, I used to make machine belts like those by heating a blade and welding the ends of the belt together, they lasted very well, do the brass cartridges fire form and go back in the chamber without re sizing? Given the complexity I wonder if they were re loaded back then? Stay safe! Chris B.

Thanks so much for the continued support. I did spend way more time on this than I had planned. I would dig up one fact and it would pose several more questions. When I acquired the AOC drill, ( not Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ), it had been abused and was solid rust and totally frozen. I did make the belt in the manner which you describe, thanks for mentioning the drill. As for the foil cases, as far as I know they were not meant to be reloaded but it looks like you could get a couple shots out of some of them. Regards...Doc

@@dr.durellshepard398 Well done on bringing the high speed drill back to life, few people realise that very small drills require a high RPM , I see many people trying to drill 1/16" holes at low revs! I know what you mean about going down a Rabbit hole on your research, the problem is that if we do not venture into seeming dead ends there are a lot of things we can miss tings which turn out to be critical to our research. One good aspect of being retired! Although it has been asked "what do you do all day?" Obviously from people with little interest in anything. Chris B.

Как обычно оказалось, что то что видел на картинках живьём работает немного не так как казалось, спасибо за подробную видеоинструкцию, жду 2 часть 🖐😁 P.S. нигде не могу найти материала о "Porter turret rifle 1851" и "Сochran turret rifle 1839", картинки есть и много, и видео есть, но НИКТО ИЗ НИХ НЕ СТРЕЛЯЕТ! Ваш канал единственный где можно не только узнать историю и механику оружия, но и увидеть главное для чего оно нужно - как это оружие стреляет! Ещё вопрос, Вы занимаетесь только длинноствольным оружием или есть и раритетный короткоствол? И какие модели оружия Вы ещё планируете показать?

Доброе утро, сэр, и спасибо за ваши добрые комментарии. У меня нет информации о винтовках Портера или Кокрана. Я стреляю только из длинноствольного оружия. Я не знаю, где вы живете, но с сожалением вынужден сообщить, что KZbin заблокировал вторую часть этого видео в Беларуси и России. Первая часть не имела ограничений. Nice! I own a 4th Model Burnside and I shoot her once in a while. I reload the nylon cartridges or the brass overpriced cartridges ( I bought a dozen). Now you've just inspired me to make my own rolled cartridges!

Excellent, The fourth model is a great choice. Of all the rolled cases I made, the plain brass ones worked best, as long as I made them long enough to seal ahead of the block. None of the sides split. Thank you for commenting. Best of luck, Happy shooting.....Doc

@@elenas4878 Very good ! The brass foil worked well for me as long as I made them long enough to seal the joint at the end of the barrel. Longer is better, Shorter would leak a lot of gas. Best of luck at the range,......Doc
