His "disappearance" on February 13th was the day he was descending Denali. There were high winds, it was -50F, and the weather made spotting him impossible. It's likely that he was running out of fuel, and due to Uemura's reputation, no one wanted to possibly offend him by sending a search party. On Feb 20th the weather cleared and Uemura and his previous camp on the mountain at 16,600 feet were nowhere to be found. Another storm came around and by Feb 26 it cleared, allowing two experienced climbers to search for him. All that was found was a diary saying that he had to leave some gear behind to lighten the load (Naomi Uemura Wikipedia). Calling it a "disappearance" with almost no context makes it seem like we have no idea where he went, but there's no question that he died on that mountain. The most likely two theories on *how* he exactly died are that (1) he fell when descending the headwall, died there (or at least hurt himself badly), then got buried by snow, or (2) he made it to the base of the headwall but then fell into one of the many crevasses.

There's likely not enough specific info about that part of this series of events to even put a story together other than what's already been told. The search party wasn't sent immediately because of his reputation. What else is there to tell about that? Not much, as far as I can tell.

Disrupt could also explain the different theories of how he died. Also, his diary was found and the entries described the trip. He went missing a day after his birthday... I think there's a story to be told here

Everyone commenting on the quality of this mini doc and yes, it's very well made, as they always are on this channel, but this man's story that he's telling, my God what a fascinating individual. And can we take a moment to commend the rescue team and Nasa. I can barely imagine the relief Mr. Uemura must have felt when he realized that plane was there for his rescue and that little speck from empathizing has brought a tear to my eyes. To continue on after a polar bear attack, unruly dogs, puppies being born, breaking through the ice and in -50° weather, the determination is absolutely amazing. What a wonderful story and thank you and your team for sharing it with us with such a great presentation.

Its so amazing that he saved some of the dogs when the ice broke, I mean just the fact that his mind 1st went to the dogs and not all of the supplies that'll actually keep alive, shows you what kind of man he truly was. He obviously was a man that truly love the earth and all the creatures on it, which is so beautiful. Also love that he tried to keep the puppies alive, cuz honestly some people wouldn't have even tried, they would've just left them out in the snow cuz they thought there was no way they could survive the trip, but he tried his hardest to keep them alive even though it probably just added on more work for him. I admire this man so much

It's always hard for me to watch videos and docs on adventurers like this. There's a reason there aren't many old ones. It really saddens me that the world loses so many of these brave souls. But at the same time, I aspire to have the same peace of mind and willingness to go as they do. I remember back in 1996, pregnant with my daughter, it got to -55° here in Wisconsin (since been as cold, but that was the coldest ever here). Walking outside talks your breath away. I couldn’t imagine what this brave soul did for so long. I do not like though the dogs out there. My opinion. They are not ALWAYS warm. I never let my dogs out for more than 20 minutes here in WI in the winter, ever. In fact, you can go to jail for leaving them out in the cold.
