if you think about it, most of us are in a similar situation, just less extreme. we barely interact with people outside of our primary household, we only go outside when we must, and the situation has lasted sporadically for about a year. on top of the isolation, we've been dealing with a pandemic, which just adds more stress and fear to it all.

I'm reminded of one time I was playing The Long Dark, and was trapped in a cave for several in-game days. I don't remember exactly how long. The game has a feature called Auroras, which in the game's canon, are electric storms that are capable of reviving the electronics that had been disabled by a particularly large one, causing the Quiet Apocalypse. During Auroras, you can explore areas which would otherwise be inaccessible. They house large amounts of high-level loot and supplies... but as you might expect, if you spend too long, you can become trapped. They're fairly rare, occurring maybe once or twice per in-game month. I became lost in a mine during an Aurora, which I'd made a note to sweep as quickly as I could, given the fact I wasn't familiar with the territory. By the time I found the elevator shaft again, it was far too late. It was probably the most damned I'd ever felt in a video game. I searched as thoroughly as I could for any other exit, anywhere, perhaps an entrance to this part of the cave meaning that the room I had *entered* from was the inaccessible one. But after a couple of ingame days, I realized I was wasting my time. I had found food and water in the mine, but not all that much, and before long I ended up having to ration out the very firewood that was keeping my body above hypothermia. It was just a matter of whether I'd last until the next Aurora or not. I did, thankfully, but that experience stuck with me for the rest of my time with The Long Dark. I highly recommend the game, btw. It's just... incredible. What survival games should aspire to, really.

This kind of resonates with me. My abusive father made me do homeschooling and then never let me leave the house. For an entire year this went on, and after so many months of barely registering my existence, I felt like a hologram. I couldn't seem to accept that I existed. I had no friends. My father never wanted to be around me. He restricted my internet usage so I couldn't make online friends. Our neighbors never spoke to us so I wasn't able to make any friends. I was so alone. My grades failed spectacularly. I knew how to do the work, but the deadlines were so hard to reach due to my excessive procrastination. I had an F in LA for the longest time, and with a spur of luck and 6 mugs of coffee, I managed to turn in an LA project and get a B at the end of the final semester. The rest of my classes were mostly C's though. It's scary. It feels like you're dying. You're fading into obscurity and you're waiting for yourself to one day just vanish and cease to exist.

The incident in Chile really moved the country, and improved the conditions of the miners and workers in general. I remember being a little kid when it happened, it felt just like a news story, but then we receive update the next day, and the next, and the hopr of finding them fluctuated every day. Everyone was looking at them, waiting for a sign, just like we today expect aliens to contact us, we waited, and waited, and when the country was starting to think of them as corpses, a vibration was registered, and then a note "Estamos bien en el refugio los 33" (We are fine in the shelter, -the 33). By that time weeks had passed, they should be dead but they weren't, thatsense of hope moved the country, everyone was happy for seeing alive people they have never seen before, the patriotism was felt like never before, at least I've never seen it like that, I remember some days when the national TV would show the mine and the updates all day. Then we received live footage, we felt like we were with them, we laughed with them, we cried with them, some days even eat with them, sleep by their sides. And then the Phoenix was a thing, and it went down which was pretty shocking but when we saw the first guy outside we felt a joy that I haven't felt before, it was like he was a relative, they felt like family by that time, and then the last one came out almost a day after and it was cathartic, they're free. People we never knew, people that didn't know us, people that to this day dont know me, but we know them, that sunrise when the last one came out everyone hugged each other, like brothers and sisters, like a single family. It was something pretty bad, and I hope it never happens again, but for a single time for that period, even more for that last minute when we saw the face of the last Chilean, we were one nation, we had a thousand differences, but that single thing those 33 miners, made a whole country with millions of people feel united and feel proud of where we come from, something pretty rare these days.

Even though I’m still in my 20s (granted, 29 until the end of May), you saying you remember it happening when you were a kid makes me feel so old. lol But yeah, I was in college and I remember checking for updates inbetween classes on the computers in our design lab. I live in the US and even though I am geographically far away I was so worried for those miners and their families. I don’t think I’ll ever forget an interview I watched with the mother of one of the miners. You could tell how strong she was but also how much she was hurting and I wished so much I could give her a hug.

I remember having their rescue live-streamed in my classroom for days when this happened. I felt an added sense of horror because only a few years prior, my dad had gone down that exact mine to work on machinery. An odd feeling to have while sitting in a classroom all the way in Canada, lmao.

I’ve been doing 3 years of isolation and i can understand how she feels, when she says that she feels like she doesn’t exist i feel it too ! Being alone every day with only my phone to connect, it feels like everything is fictional and not real , empty and abstract! Almost like im not even here and that i only exist on the internet!
