@tfortwins660 Just go back into table design and change the data type to text. You shouldn't lose any existing data since numbers will easily become text. Going the OTHER way can sometimes cause problems.
@599CD11 жыл бұрын
I would go with either a NUMBER (double) field and store the length in minutes (like 90.5) because you can always format that in different ways. OR you could use a date/time field and store minutes:seconds. The choice is yours.
@599CD12 жыл бұрын
Ideally, yes... you would have a Country table that would list the country code and full country name, and then another Currency table that would like the currency code and it's full name. Then, if you want, you could have a currency FIELD on your country table so you could specify the currency for each country. Now, this is getting WAY beyond what I cover in my Beginner Access tutorials. Relating multiple tables together is getting into my Expert Level material (201+).

I honestly don't recommend storing ANY external files in your database (as attachments OR objects). Personally, I recommend storing the files in an external folder and just saving the FILENAME in your database. You can still launch the PDF if needed from inside Access. I cover something similar with graphics in my ACCESS IMAGING SEMINAR: 599cd(DOT)com/XACIMG

This is a video for Microsoft ACCESS, not PowerPoint. However, it sounds to me like you just need to insert a text box or some other object on your slide that will allow you to type in it. I always set up ONE slide and then just copy and paste it to make more. If you need more help, don't post here (again, this video is for Microsoft Access). Contact me via email or my web site.

Nope. You would need a 2nd table, related to the first, with a DateTime field in it. You can set the default date to =NOW() and that will put the current timestamp in the record. I cover this in my EXPERT series of classes because it involves multiple, related tables.

I should clarify my previous response by saying, "YES, it's possible, but it will involve some programming, and you really shouldn't do it this way anyhow, so the answer for all practical purposes is 'Nope.'" :)

If a field in your table has set values, is it better to create another table for those values only? For example, in an Employee Table, you could have a Role field, that has 10 set values for different roles in the company. Should you therefore have another table for Roles? I guess my question is this - if a field always has set values - should that field be getting it's values from another table?
@599CD10 жыл бұрын
Tammy Matthews Yes, you would use a Roles table to list all of the roles, then you could use a COMBO BOX to select a role for each employee. I cover using multiple tables together (with relationships) in my Access Expert Level 1 class: 599CD.com/XVDWN2

Im working on my budget. I've inserted my checkbook from my bank to my excel. I'm new to Access. I'm familiar with Excel formulas, but not IF Functions. How can I create a link from an item's value to a specific column, based on the category to which it belongs? My columns are Date, Transaction, Category, Debit, Credit and Balance. Then, I have each category individually named, for each column. I've been copying the amount from the Debit column and pasting the link in it's coordinating category column. But I don't want to continue doing that for every single item. The purpose is to have a column for Income, Deposits, Utilities, Fuel, Groceries, Medical, Eating Out...and so on. It makes it easier for when I want to see each month's totals, and the yearly total for taxes. What tutorial do you suggest I look at for this? Thank you so much!

If I want to run a query on my clients who have a birthday in Janurary then I use that data to link in Publisher to make birthday postcards. Currently I'm using Excell and just filter the birthday field to find January birthdays then past the data in another excell sheet which I link to publisher to make the birthday cards. As I convert to Access, do I need to create a separate field for Birthday Day, Birthday Month, Birthday Year, or can I use one birthday field?

Would you make "PostalCode" a number field?
@jaworskij7 жыл бұрын
No! If you're referring to Canadian Postal Codes, such as LNL NLN (where L=Letter/alpha N=Number) then use a Text field instead.
@599CD2 жыл бұрын
Even US ZIP codes I would make TEXT fields.

Isn't it wise to limit the amount of characters for e.g the FirstName and LastName field? A field size of 255 characters is way more than any name requires. :)

I am sure the answer to my question will present itself in future videos. When I format a field to accept numbers it only accepts integers. If I enter a fraction it doesn't accept the input and if I enter a decimal it follows math rounding rules.

The voice could be less of a drawl, and you could stop referencing things you've already mentioned in the last two videos, if I wanted to hear the same old stuff I would have clicked on a previous part. And I can't tell if I should really take these 'lessons' seriously as half of your instructions are 'personal preference'.
@599CD11 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your opinions, however I find that repetition is often the best way to reinforce learning new topics. You don't have to follow my personal preferences, however the reason I give them is so that you can benefit from my 20 years of experience with Access. There are many ways to do things in Access. I'm trying to save you time by showing you my recommendations for best practices, and to avoid poor ones. As far as my voice goes, that's usually the one thing I get the most compliments on. Sorry you don't find it to your liking.
