Nice work. I’ve got a 1973 Briggs 5hp that is a very low hour motor that was neglected for decades. Im going thru it to put it to use on a 1969 mini bike. Very helpful video.

I rebuilt one of these in '93 and sold it to a student in my school. I was 16 at the time. It came from our own lawnmower.

Yeah it's an old motor but a great one. It was the first time I ever worked on a old ocarburetor

@@JOATD This engine is bullet proof. My dad never serviced it. from about the age of 8 I used this lawnmower every saturday to mow about 400 square meters of lawn. It eventually packed up, and I was in technical school, and motor was one of the subjects where we had to strip and assemble a robin engine as final exam. So I rebuilt the carb, polished the valves, en installed new rings on the pistons.

I find a wire wheel on a bench grinder cleans off the rust with minimal metal removal

Working on the same engine (1985 version) - stuck at the point of removing diaphragm cover - removed 4 screws but not sure to deal with remaining spring pin. Looks like you got the cover off - any force needed? Hit with a plastic mallet? Will be following closely. Thanks.

We're did u spray the carb clean in to get the valve in stuck

Overtime the valve get a buildup of carbon deposit. (Hardened black soot) the clearance between the valve and the valve walls are so small that it's easy for a valve to get stuck by carbon

Remove the valve cover and you will see both valves

I took that thing all apart either ground is not hooked up good or it not getting gas with a new carb

Compression is always the first thing to check. Then you know immediately whether the valves and pistons are OK...

Bought a rotovator with one of these engines, bit hard to start and won't take the revs to well, let's the odd back fire but still does her job when you get her going . Changed the oil a few times in her as it was black. If I cleaned the carb and ordered new diaphragm would that sort her? Subscribed to your chanel interesting video!!

Thank you I'm glad that my video was able to help you. Some of the main causes of backfiring are damage spark plugs improper gap on a spark plug. If the motor is surging you have a dirty carburetor. I will always start off with cleaning the carburetor first. Making sure that the air filter is new and again the spark plug

best hack job I have ever seen, never took the piston out to check the rings or cylinder. never checked the valves. when you restore an engine you take it all apart and replace the worn parts.

Not sure how you got it to start. The small electrical wire the you put between the lower tank bracket and the motor is the kill wire off the magneto if you ground that out it stops the spark. There is an plastic insert that goes on the lower tank mount where the throttle cable goes when that throttle taken to beyond idle to stop it grounds it out and kills the spark

What year was yours? I have a 1977 briggs flathead like yours that i am trying to get running. Any tips?

Make sure that the gas tank is clean. 1. Change the oil 2. Change the spark plug 3. Clean the carburetor 4. Make sure the air filter is clean 5. After you do all of that it should start if it does not start do a compression test to make sure that the motor has compression if the motor does not have compression the exhaust valve is stuck. 6. Remove valve cover the valve that's closest to the exhaust will be the exhaust valve just make sure to unstick it. Spray carburetor cleaner on it. Try not to push it into the motor

I'm sorry if I still had the actual motor I would do a video on adjusting the main carburetor needle but it was more of a restoration for a friend

But if you take a look in my descriptions area all the way at the bottom where it says helpful download. I actually have the manuals for this Motor and it probably tells you how to adjust the carbs.
