My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We see over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

I've got to the point i just buy new carbs anymore. Trying to find a place where i live to buy or look up parts is impossible. The last carb I rebuilt cost me $103 for rebuild kit & it took 3 weeks to get parts in. I just replaced the carb on my rider yesterday. I ordered new carb with gaskets, spark plugs, fuel filter & air cleaner for $43. I ordered on Amazon & had delivered in 2 days. I do appreciate your vids you are true professional showing & explaining repairs. Ive watched several of your vids when trouble shooting engines ive been working on.

It was a pleasure to watch you work. As a very seasoned mechanic (read that as old), it was obvious to me that you have a good grasp of what you are doing and how to use tools. I have a John Deere mower that has the same carb and it is running rich. I bought a new carb for it and needed to figure out how to replace the carb with a minimum of cursing! Your video was excellent in giving me the instruction that I needed and I'm going to give it a go tomorrow morning. Thank you!

My Uncle that worked as a car and truck mechanic for 40 years or so, taught me a cool trick, how to magnetize my screwdrivers. He would get a length of copper wire (insulated is fine with bare ends) and wrap it around the shank of the screwdriver (several times is okay) although the more the merrier. Wearing gloves and eye shields (he did not) touch one end to the post on a car battery then quickly touch the other end of the wire to the other post (like lighting a match, several strikes were sufficient). Sparks would fly, but a small amount of magnetic energy would stay with the screwdriver. This would allow one to load the screw onto the driver while pointing it sideways or downward and it would stay with the driver while you aim the screw at the threaded hole. Happy threading!! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and experience.... I'm just a homeowner and your video gave me the confidence and insights to try rebuilding the carb on my Husqvarna YTH22V46...However, I was lucky, after removing the shroud, I found the carb and linkages were completely caked over with cutting debris. After removing all the debris and thoroughly cleaning the area around the engine and carb, the surging and other issues have all cleared up. And if I do need to eventually rebuild the carb, now I know I can do it, as I was only one step away from removing it.

Great video as usual. Today I just tackled this same carb on my 24hp B&S Simplicity Zero turn mower. The sad thing is I didn't have a carb kit. I just wanted to see what might be the problem of my surging engine. Wish I had found your video before I started. Anyway, I cleaned everything and reused all the o-rings and gaskets and finally got it all back together. I had the misfortune of having the linkage that operates the choke pop off without me seeing how it looked before hand and like to have never figured out how it went back together. Anyway, it fired up and ran much better, not perfect, but much better. I'll be ordering all the gaskets, jets, o-rings, etc. from your list and start all over again. Should go much faster the second go around. Thanks again for all the info.

Thank you for your excellent video. My Briggs V-Twin was surging badly. The two jets that you said had a right and left were laying in the bottom of the float bowl. The tiny o-rings had deteriorated and would not hold them in position. It was a chore to replace them with my fat fingers. I could not see any difference between the jets or any markings to identify right and left so I took a fifty-fifty chance and installed them randomly. Looks like I got lucky because all is well. Thanks again!

Check your "new parts" for flaws, save yourself a LOT of headache! After replacing my head gaskets I went ahead and cleaned my carb, so this video was excellent as it's my carb. I have a Dixie Chopper with a B&S 23HP twin cylinder. But... after getting everything back together it was only running on one cylinder. Short story is that the NEW manifold to head intake gasket had been crushed on one side (you could see it was done during production, another gasket got crushed into this one) and it wouldn't seal, the intake was sucking air. Luckily I found the defective gasket during reassembly, this after doing compression test ,spark test and carefully cleaning the carb again. I happened to notice the imprint on the new gasket as I was reassembling. I used the old intake gasket and it fired up fine. Took it out and mowed some tall grass, whatever I fixed brought back it's power! The head gaskets didn't appear blown but something brought back the power. Bre, I love all your videos, you've taught me a lot.

One thing I like to do is drill out the jets they come about 43 to 44 thousands, I drill them both to 47 to 48. That will wake up a Briggs. I have gone as large as 50 thousandths. Most Briggs engines are lean from the factory, a little richening will help them run smooth and accelerate strong. No more hesitation when going from idle to wide open throttle. Especially with the blades engaged. Just a Suggestion.

Hey Chickanic. I really love your videos. You have helped me out a lot. I have that same carb on a yazoo kees 48 inch zero turn with a 19.5 hp briggs. I rebuilt the carb just like your video shows, the only difference is my carb has one jet mounted to a fitting that screws into the fuel shutoff. When I cranked it the engine still surges until it warms up. After that it runs pretty smooth. What did I miss? Thanks for having a great channel.

I had the same surging issue, but it was caused by the two small jets that were clogged. I'm surprised you didn't have to clean those out.

I replaced the carb kit except the 2 jets, the ylooked good and clean. My mower still dies after 10 minutes. I went thru everything, carb getting gas, replaced hoses, pump, needle, cap, finally adjusted choke and governor and it started right up, ran 2 hours, but now dying again. Guess I will do a kit again. I see gas doesnt fill up the filter while running, i wonder if fuel filter should always be full of gas, tank hoses maybe? IDK. I will try focusing on replacing the 2 jets with O rings.

Wow the amount of dirt that engine has ingested, no wonder it was surging! Great job on h that carb. A really simple carb that works great. Intimidating for the inexperienced tech. Can you link your carb rebuild mats? Thanks Bre!

Thanks Babe! I got them from our Briggs dealer, Power Distributors. I use them mainly to set saws on while I working since they soak up the bar oil and gas so well.

Thanks for this video. I bought a used 24v48 this spring and it's been running fine. Ran the fuel dry the other day and when refueled and started the surging began. Any comment on this? It was running fine and then it wasn't. Most likely going to follow your directions here. Thanks again.

Great vid. Pretty sure my fuel shutoff solenoid is broken. Hope I can get it off without pulling the whole carb.

I absolutely love your channel, great information and procedures. Question I have is about my carborator. It has been surging and when I disassembled it, I found that the jet tubes were really nasty looking. Green and crusty. Can it be salvaged? I have a picture of you need to see what I am talking about.

You will want to use an 'E' socket, probably a size E4, for those carb studs. Fasteners like that are becoming more common, so you might as well get a set of the correct sockets. Be sure to get a set that includes the small sizes.

5 is correct size

@@philliphall5198 For reference, E sockets are sized by measuring the point to point dimension across the diameter of the stud, in mm. E-Torx sockets are sized with a completely different method than Torx bits.
