This is the New York I remember and love, gritty and glittering all at once. The air seemed to carry energy, endless potential, creativity, and freedom. I miss it so much. These videos are a reminder of that beautiful time. Thank you to Nelson for capturing it so beautifully - and thank you to the poster.

The gay scene of the 80s is kinda fascinating. In the mainstream being gay was completely outrageous, but in places like New York city, gays seemed to be more open and overtly "out" than even today.

It's easier to be out in a gayborhood. Since then gentrification has forced young, out, gays, to scatter and be less visible, and less engaged in a gay community. Speaking of visibility, in New York fo example, they walk, you have to be out, shopping for your parties and your day to day.

These videos are like a time machine. It's like being there. I wonder what I was doing on that day. Sometimes I can remember. I remember most of all how those times felt. I was a teenager, I was just starting to figure out what I might want to do, but there was no rush. I could breathe!! Most of all I could breathe! It felt freer back then. A nice day out in the sun, anything was possible. I keep trying to understand what changed, how it all slipped away when we weren't paying attention or something.

@matthewmorrison37454 жыл бұрын
The internet exposed us to so much...
@8jaime810 күн бұрын
Not ironically. It’s only natural that communication was more authentic. People socialised face-to-face. They didn’t hide behind screens and interact there like jerks (keyboard warriors and trolls) and liars (all the endless fakery online). Back then if you wanted to be a jerk or a liar, you had to face instant karma since you did it to someone’s face. It trained people to be civilised with one another. People also had more confidence and better social skills from all the real-life interaction. We also didn’t have propaganda on the net creating divisions between people. The internet, and especially social media, have ruined society. Those of us who lived before it are very lucky to know what a better world looks like. It will be forgotten when we are gone.

The continuous one-shot-pan Nelson did from 9:18 onward, from people getting off the MTA bus, going into a corner shop, seeing the Pop Tart and panning to another guy walking away was also quite impressive technique.

Mind you, that is NOT how most people tried to get ahold of other people "in the past". That's why it's novel, even to Randy and Nelson here. By the 1980s people were leaving voicemails on other folks' home answering machines. Or leaving a note on their front door if they weren't home. Or calling a mutual friend/acquaintance to ascertain their whereabouts.

@8jaime810 күн бұрын
Loads of people did this. The difference is that Nelson was in the middle of the creative and gay scene in a major world centre that launched so many of his friends to fame. That’s what made his stuff worth uploading. People would be less keen to watch uncle Ted’s films of backyard BBQs, tennis matches, and dinner with the neighbours, filmed in smalltown 1960s Canada (sorry, uncle Ted) - but they exist. Loads of average people did this. Nelson’s work is incredibly important, but he was far from the first.
