This is a victory for disabled actors, that's all I can say about this performance. The fact that Castille shows so much emotion despite not being the singing voice of Quasimodo, both they and Cardona deliver one of the best Quasimodo performances I have ever seen.
@ronanlevy15544 ай бұрын
it’s not really “despite” not being the singing voice, facial expressions are a HUGE part of asl (and part of why i’m bad at asl). facial expressions convey what tone of voice/inflection does in spoken language. but i agree, this rendition of this song is honestly my favorite

Ok I see they are being inclusive but in-universe what is the artistic meaning? Is Quasimodo deaf and the gargoyle is an imaginary friend - a representation of his lost voice?

I watched this particular production and honestly I hated the gargoyles in the movie but actually thought they worked quite well as Quasimodos inner monologue in this musical stage adaption. They aren’t the cringeworthy gargoyles of the movie but instead really help develop the main character’s struggles and identity. “Made of Stone” was by far the highlight of the show.

I saw a production like this a year ago at the Music Circus, and honestly, I think it’s the best way to portray the character. Quasimodo’s deafness was already showed in the original stage adaption by the difference between his speaking voice and his singing voice, his inner monologue. I think that doing it this way, with a whole separate actor as his “voice”, really helps make that distinction. Not to mention it gives HoH actors more opportunities and makes what I believe to be a more authentic performance & portrayal.

Josh Castille is one of my favorite stage actors. I was fortunate enough to see him as Ernst in Deaf West’s “Spring Awakening”, so I was overjoyed when I learned that he’d be playing the title role in “Hunchback.” My hat’s off to the casting department for casting a deaf actor in this role and for incorporating ASL throughout the show, as I feel it adds a special element of authenticity. I live in Michigan, so taking a trip to Seattle just to see the show will be out of the question, so I suppose I’ll have to survive off the clips that are uploaded here instead. ☹️

@Hannahlindsey74 жыл бұрын
J Do I’m confused by your comment... is it a bad thing to relate to very particular struggles of disability and mental illness? These are things that aren’t portrayed very often in media, and certainly not in Disney media. The fact that people of all abilities and mental health can find beauty in a story in their own way is a beautiful thing, and I find your comment to be quite condescending to those who were touched by this rendition. Quasimodo is a character with disabilities. They’re downplayed in the movie, but they play a much larger part in the book. Representation of disabilities is important. And it’s absolutely great that you can find your own meaning in this story of breaking out of your comfort zone and connecting with others. That is a great connection to make. But it isn’t the only one, and this story (and any story) speaks differently to different people based on life experience. You should not attack people for how they relate to the character, song, and story.
