What if we don't know the percent, how would we do this? For example I recently put up headphones for sale, they cost me 300, and some guy offered me 40 for them (I declined obviously) is there a way to figure out what percentage he offered me?

Do 40 divided by 300. That gives you an answer of 0.13333 (3 repeats forever). Then convert that decimal to a percentage by multiplying it by 100 (you can move the decimal twice to the right - this will move everything to the correct place value). So you were offered 13.33% of the total cost of $300.
