6.0 lifter failure

My round pump has over 250k miles and haven't failed

How common are lifter failures and what is a sign one is coming? Like sounds of the lifters getting worn pretty bad. I have a 240k mile truck, I think lifters are original. Truck is totally stock with exception of EGR delete. No tuning or anything

lifter failer isn't that common.. if you don't maintain oil changes and take car of the engine then expect debris to take out a roller on the lifter.. usually it will get a piece of dirt or something on the cam and when it comes around it smacks the roller and bam.. the lifter is a common lifter that's used in multiple engines such as dodge, ford gas engines, chevy and oldsmobile. so the chances of a lifter failing in one of those engines is the same chance everyone takes in 6.0's.. keep up with the oil changes and youll be fine.

+FULLY LIT thats good to know. I change oil about every 4000-6000 miles, ford filters, and archoil for that extra lubrication. What does a bad lifter sound like?

jspivak86 you will have a thumping noise coming from the air intake and exhaust.

if the lifter is damaged, would there be an obvious symptom?

If it is FAILING, there will be what sounds like a "belt squeal" or like a bad tensioner, just a chirp, chirp chirp. If it has failed, a knocking (cam isn't rolling, it's slapping now) and eventually, you will get a no-start with no, low oil pressure. Do yourself a favor, check the LPOP regulator if you have a no-start. I wish I did, would've saved me time (not money, that didn't change). If you find a needle, overhaul time. No doubt about it.

Bryguy Notlaw I ended up with a Crank no start on a camping trip. Zero symptoms, Icp pressure was perfect on the drive up. Went to crank in A.m. Crank no start, pulled heat shield & disconnected ICP sensor. still crank no start. sprayed a Lil ether into intake, after allowing glow plugs to time out, tried to turned over from ether. engine started making a funny noise during crank, ended up starving low pressure pump, which starved high pressure pump. computer didn't see min 500 psi at high pressure rail. towed it home..then pulled the Hex on low pressure pump, The needle was in the low pressure pump valve. That pin was starving oil to low pressure pump. Now, I test ran engine for about 30mins idling. there's no chirping, popping or any signs of anything wrong. Starts immediately, runs smooth as butter. It has been sitting in the garage while I save up 3k to change out the lifters. thoughts?

don't forget to tell them you have to change top cover for oil pump and that it won't work on the early 03's because of icp sensor other than that good video

Can you upgrade the 03 6.0l intake manifold to a 04 or 05 style as well while upgrading the new style HP oil pump?

This is Rich from S.C. I have an 03 f250 I bought 7 months ago. The motor runs good. The man I bought the truck from said the motor had new head and a good bit of other work done to it. But the motor is very noisy of what I feel is in the rockers. The oil pressure gauge shows irs fine, it doesnt run hot. What is your feelings on this .

If the roller on the lifter does break it's probably going to tear the camshaft up so that motor is coming out anyway

6.0 Doctor help! Found a bad lifter with anymore no symptoms. Surged at idle, 2 injector codes, and slapping sound coming cylinder 6. What is everything I should do with the motor pulled? Mechanic says to might as well replace the engine. What you think? Thanks!

Straight up they made the pushrods in those motors a little too long for the first few years of production. The new replacemnt number for the pushrods in those are actually the 6.4 part number. Why those lifters were failing lol

They are hydraulic lifters. I don't buy that.

@@ai_university true story...especially if you have heads milled. The 6.4 push rod is the 6.0 replacement. Different length.. All 6.0 push rods have been changed.

@@mikefults9309 the lifter failure is due to the plastic guides. Duramax uses metal guides. Same hydro lifters. Very few failures. I don't disagree that the new pushrods are shorter, but I would argue that has more to do with Ford not wanting to make two slightly different parts where one would work.

Lol, silence.... in comments... crickets chirping... usually what happens with these is the high pressure oil pump pipe fitting nut likes to back out and you lose oil pressure.. but yep... these engines are pull the motor to service

2003 motor here just refreshed it and the plastic lifter trays were fine
