I worked for Ford at both a dealer and then corporate level. Here’s my .02$ Take the 6.0 all day long. Most of the quirks that led to horror stories are now easy to diagnose and fix or avoid all together. Anything 2005 or later that has Not been tuned, and has had the recommended maintenance done is a great starting point. Look at the engine hours versus mileage. These engines don’t like to idle for long periods of time. do an EGR delete and you’re good. Monitor your temp deltas and FICM and it will last you a long time and be pretty economical. The 6.4 runs like a raped ape but they are a ticking timebomb. And by that I mean you will need a new engine. Not just a head, or a long block, the whole thing which is 12-15k because every runner is spoken for. The mechanics in the comments can get into more detail but usually it’s the #7 or #8 piston that begins the cascade of failure. They usually last 150k. There is no bulletproofing them. Do all the deletes you want and studs it will still blow up. Now add onto that the mileage sucks and it’s a loser. Unless you are building a race truck stay away. All those advocating a 7.3. Have you driven a newer diesel? Its loud, down on power and sucks to start in the cold. Granted it is more reliable, but the truck that it attaches to has a worse transmission, suspension, etc. Plus you’re going to have to rebuild the 4r100 anyway.

The thing that hurts the 7.3L, or at least the ones used in the 94.5 to 97, it the fuel pump. It can't make the fuel pressure that the injectors need to get the most out of them on those engines, or thats what I hear anyway. Being a mechanic you'd know better than I would and I can't ask my uncle's opinion and he was a mechanic for Ford back then.

I work at a shop specializing in Light Duty Diesel, more specifically Fords. The 6.7 is fantastic after you replace the CP4 Pump and install a Catastrophe Kit from Ford before the CP4 grenades. The 6.4 is in fact a ticking time bomb. I think the interior and body are the best looking, but that engine is a damn boat anchor. If you have one and it runs, trade it or sell it for a 6.0. The 6.0 is my baby. Delete the EGR and cooler, put new lifters and updated pushrods in it, update the STC fitting, heavy duty oil cooler, New Ford factory headgaskets and ARP head studs, blue spring upgrade, coolant filter kit, and change the oil and filter every 5k and the fuel filters every 10k. For the love of God stop using the tall oil filter and tall filter cap. The 7.3 is your grandpas truck..it’ll work all day but doesn’t make any power. Buy a 6.0 and be happier.

I just had a long block put in my 6.4 . I was lucky enough to find a reputable shop that did the work. I had it totally deleted new intake, turbos were still good so we just cleaned them up and put a 4" exhaust. Mild tune FASS fuel system and the thing is amazing. Realistically i will be very happy to get 200k additional miles out of it. I still think that I am way ahead financially from buying a newer truck. Besides that I love the looks, ride and transmission. Hope you guys have great luck with your rigs.

Exactly. 6.4 was waaaaay worse than 6.0. International intentionally screwed ford with the worse diesel ever made, the 6.4 garbage. I'm a Ford man for life, but 6.4 sucks. If you have one, just burn it or trade it in asap. However 6.4 can be very fast, and that's something the 6.0 cant match 6.0 can be made to be an extremely reliable motor. I brought mine brand new in 2007, bulletproofed it (no egr, bpd air to oil cooler behind radiator) also I'm running group 31 big rig batteries, amsoil synthetics bumper to bumper. Have yet to have one single problem, 298,000 miles...still pulls my 17k 5th wheel across the country😊 Maybe after it breaks, I'll consider a 2022 Ford 6.7 powerstroke by then

08 6.4 F250: I was terrified by all the reviews of the 6.4 but couldnt pass on the deal i was getting. I got it at 46k, still have it and want to keep if for as long as possible. In the 1st 2 months I had to replace the egr valve, both thermostats and was noticing I was burning through a lot of coolant due to the dpf. At 50k I did a full EGR/DPF delete ( 90% of the truck critical failures come as result of either the EGR or the DPF Messing things up internally) and ordered aH&S Mini Maxx tuner for it. I stay up-to-date with my maintenance currently have 88,000 miles. I deleted everything and installed the tuner over a weekend and have had zero problems since deleting. The truck performs better, sound better and operates without a flaw. There are definitely easier engines to work on, but it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to believe.

After working at a Ford dealer which had two shops, one for cars and one for trucks where I was a tech in the truck shop I can easily say the 6.0 is better. When I first started working there I asked all the other techs what they would own. Most said if they could afford a 6.7 they would buy one, others said a 7.3 if they could find one cheap and rust free whether or not it ran. When it came down to the 6.0 and 6.4 not a single person ever said they would own a 6.4! In fact two guys I worked with actually had 6.0s lol. As far as work that I have done on them usually the 6.0s had oiling issues or needed fuel injectors. The 6.4s always came in needing an engine after the owner neglected to change the oil in time and the truck "made oil" which was thinned out by fuel and either made the truck run away or wore out bearing material prematurely. All in all I tell all my friends and customers, a 6.0 Will be a decent truck with some time and money but stay FAR FAR away from 6.4s

HA! I'm glad I'm not the only Ford dealership technician who thinks the 6.4s are ticking time bombs on wheels. It's not a matter of IF but rather WHEN that expensive repair is going to happen. Prematurely failing rocker arms and roller lifters is another issue that comes to mind with the 6.4 to go along with "making" oil, eating belt tensioners and radiators.

230K on my 2009 6.4. I have had small issues, but most are due to upgrading/fixing factory short comings. I have experience with the 6.0 and the 6.4. The 6.4 for me is more responsive and handles heavy loads better than the 6.0. I will have to replace the pistons soon (fear of blowing the engine.) But as of now the true 40psi boost is great!

I have the 2006 6.0. I did a lot of upper engine work; ARP Studs, milled and o-ringed the heads, new oil cooler, HP radiator, KC Turbo, upgraded 12mm dummy plugs and stand pipes, upgraded STC, blue spring upgrade, and external oil and coolant filter set up. Plus I purchased a SCT X4 Tuner/Monitor to keep track of engine parameters. It is a solid runner now. I think all that was easier than replacing bottom end items in the 6.4, so I would have to say the 6.0 is a better choice for fixing the issues. The secret is to keep it clean and cool; don't skimp on regular maintenance.

6.4L is my pick. Why? It's a beautiful truck compared to the 6.0. The interior and the exterior look so much better. I am not going to drive an f-ugly truck. But If 6.4L owners did the following, they wouldn't be whining about the 6.4L: 1) use it...don't abuse it. 2) you MUST stay up on fluid and filter changes by the book, don't go over! 3) delete the EGR/DPF as soon as the warranty expires, and 4) don't buy a used truck without seeing a detailed summary of its maintenance history. The truth is: the 6.4 haters abused it, changed oil every 10-15K miles, diluted the hell out of the oil with fuel, tuned it to some crazy psycho tune, never cleaned their DPF, ignored the regen process for far to long...then want to complain the truck blew up on them. Its like a plane...you neglect the maintenance you're going down...and by that I mean financially you're going down in the 6.4L.

I can confidently say I've worked on way more 6.0s than 6.4s in the shop even tho most of the time when it comes to a 6.4 it does end up being a time consuming/labor extensive fix. Like I said they all have their flaws regardless of what brand or motor. Personally I would much rather have a 6.4 than a 6.0. Maintenance goes a long way and I've seen both motors reach very high mileage and are still going because of the right preventative maintenance and upkeep. Simple things like EGR delete, intake, exhaust and mild tune really makes the 6.4 a completely different animal. That as well as fixing some fuel system issues, body mounts and rad problems it becomes a great reliable motor. Same can be said for the 6.0 by doing some of the same and also fixing it's common flaws. They can both be made reliable but if your looking to make any kind of power the 6.4 is certainly the way to go, not to mention the 6.4 is still the best looking body style made in my opinion. The 6.4 is a beast of power that can run fine tuned between 5 to 6 hundred HP making as much or more than the 23 6.7 high output. My 08 6.4 has 240,000 miles and gets 19 MPG as a daily driver on the highway empty gets close to 30 MPG. Talking about 6.0 having weak head bolts and that being a big problem yet its said you need to bullet proof which doesnt pertain to headstuds but rather the oil cooler and egr cooler? To my knowledge the tty bolts are ok for stock and slightly turned up applications but when the EGR ruptures from lack of coolant caused by a clogged oil cooler and sends coolant into the combustion chamber is when the bolts are usually compromised. The 6.0 isnt a bad motor, which the video state that its a decent motor but you have yo understand the issues on it and which steps to take for your 6.0

You left out that the 6.0 is fully rebuild able the 6.4 was designed as a throw away motor. We went thru 5-6.4 motors before we found one that was capable of being rebuilt. Every one of them had cracked heads. But after a year of research and custom ground cam with more oil ports, roller rockers and lifters and stronger push rods, way better custom better built pistons, and bunch of other upgrades and $24,000 later we have a good motor now. If I had to do it again, I would junk the POS and buy a 6.7L

I drive over 5,000 miles on my '07 6.0 monthly (driving from Western NC to Washington DC every week - and then around town driving). Yes I had the engine dealerproofed using Powerstroke Specialty in Buford, GA., yes is was a bit expensive, but its been worth EVERY penny (and with low purchase pricing on 6.0s - dealerproofing was nearly a wash). I plan to put over 600k on the truck in the next 10 years - the truck had 150k on it when I got it - and it just went over 200k this week - 50k in 10 months). After having the truck worked on by Powerstroke Specialty; it's been a dream to own. With no EGR, no DPF and no DEF. ...I idle the engine with nearly no worries on cold DC days - and I also get to drive lefty DC people crazy :-)). I 100% change the oil every 5k (so once a month), I always use Rotella T6, Ford filters, Archoil Friction Modifier, Fuel Treatment and Fuel System Cleaner (you can get a kit on Amazon for $95 - good for 5k miles). Change the fuel filters...BOTH on a 6.0...always at 10k. ...as US diesel is nasty. Drain and fill your coolant every 60k (never more than 60k miles and never flush - just drain and fill - use ONLY Ford VC-7-B Gold and ALWAYS a new Ford radiator cap). Change the transmission fluid & filter at 60k also (no need to get fancy - again - just drain and fill - Ford filters, Ford Mercon SP fluid). I also installed a Sinister Diesel oil and coolant bypass system (works ok good) and their Blue Spring kit. With a Loony toon (and all the other sh*t :-))...I get right at 19mpg driving 80mph. F the EPA, drive one of the last real diesel trucks and smoke all the a**holes on the road.

6.4 is by far superior when you let it breathe. after-market cold air intake ( S&B ) EGR and DPF Delete are failed emission control science projects. Especially when you include the extra MPG you gain. Epa does not have the right to make laws. If it's proven only to make extra $ for the Manufacturer. Added coolant and oil filters and modified front mounts and rad support. Coolant additives to control water pump cavitation are a must. The bull-it-proof oil cooler is another must with the added oil filter and coolant filter. And get rid of plastic parts under the valve covers. Follow strict maintenance procedures. This still is not a race engine. So don't race it. It will work hard and pull hard and give you 500k miles + don't race it. It will be your long-time daily.

PS a light tune like up to 80 hp tow and leave it there. Tune down the low-pressure fuel #2. This will eliminate most of the black smoke in stop-and-go traffic. Now you have a real truck that will put a smile on your face that will be hard to remove.😊.

Question: Which engine in better, 6.0 or 6.4? Answer: 7.3 Diesel. It was the last diesel in a Ford that came stock with forged connecting rods. Lol

What an idiotic thing to say... Put the power a 6.0 makes tune only to it and it will destroy the engine.. 7.3 has it's place but it's a gutless turd that can't take power

@Babylon falling I agree 100%, only complaint I have with 7.3 is that I desperately need another gear or maybe 2 lol

@Babylon falling I had a 7.3 and it definitely had no problem pulling. Only issue is it only had four gears (the auto is brutal) and it just wasn't fast enough. The truck didn't like going above 120kph, and for me that's not even close to adequate when driving the rockies. Made me consider a Cummins honestly, especially since I can't afford a 6.7, and I definitely don't want to bother with a 6.0/6.4

I love my 6.4, never had an issue *knocks on wood* but the 5r110w is the worst trans I've come across. I've had my truck since january and I dont beat on it, I rarely tow with it but it's my daily driver. And I've put 30k on it and I'm going into my 3rd 5r110w.

Its really efficiency vs reliability 6.4 is hpf fed while the 6.0 is hpop fed They share a block basically, so the piston and con rod and weak 6.4. Bottom end comment confuses me. The 6.4 is largely more tunable as you can get more fuel and boost to the turbos, add, they will run with out worry of high pressure oil leaks, a fault of the 6.0 hpop system It's a more efficient efficient engine as well. What's better? Well it's the 6.4 by numbers. But what would you build is up to you. I'd use the 6.0 for my preference as there easier to work on, add I'm not worried about everything else all around the 6.0 breaking unlike the 6.4 (I'm looking at you belt tensioners... ) but out of the lot ford did the best on the 6.7 liter. Tons of power, aluminum heads. Hpf fueling. That's my real choice there

6.4's also have turbo seal problems mostly due to the regen process building up so much heat.

I have hardly any money in this thing. I can afford to do a cab off and replace them as well as do the injectors and bulletproof it while I'm at it. Hopefully will be reliable after that

These engines were a collaboration between navistar and Renault. No one seems to give Renault any credit for making the 6.0 or 6.4 problematic. They were sourced for the emissions systems, since Europe was already subject to stricter regulations than here at the time.

You can build a bulletproof 6.0 that will run with a heavy tuned/deleted 6.4 an have reliability of the 7.3 truck. 6.0 for the win. Cant replace the 6.0 sound. That's a bonus

Simply put a 6.0 can be fixed, a 6.4 cannot. And now with the new EPA crackdown on the off-road stuff, a 6.0 just took a big leap in value and the 6.4 took a hit it from which it may not recover.

@@lobes187 weak cranks that twist and have excessive runout, heads that crack between the valves, core shift in the blocks. Throw that out and there is not much left. No need in even trying to fix everything else.

It has always been funny and ironic to me how many people dog the 6.0, yet you still see tons of them on the road every day. Just from what I’ve noticed around where I live, it’s probably the most common truck/company work truck on the road. Of course they have their problems just like every other engine has it’s own unique problems, but don’t be a dumbass and slap a 150+ tune on one while leaving everything else stock 🤷🏼‍♂️

It is the 6.0 !! I own a 2004 I had a complete bullet proofing and new injectors a year ago at 150,000 and now im at 205,000 and I drive it every single day 7 days a week pull a heavy trailer every single day . I DO NOT RUN A TUNER Hasn't let me down this truck is a workhorse I love it had to have rear end rebuilt at 178,000 but the trans is original

From what I hear the 6.4 is worse because the k16 pump shoots shrapnel through the injectors and kills the whole engine when it fails, and since the 6.4 was so short lived there isn’t an aftermarket solution available. At least the 6.0 can be fixed vs the 6.4 which is just a ticking time bomb.
