@michaelchan89155 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure those old enough to remember will wholeheartedly agree with you on that, hands down. In fact, it can be argued that that was easily GM's biggest monumental failure of the late '70s and early to mid '80s. It is also probably what leaves a bad taste in everyone's mouth about anything with a diesel being released by GM. Literally everything from lacking a water separator, to weak head gaskets to failing injection pumps and the list goes on plagued that engine. I remembered many of the cars equipped with that engine being sent to the scrapyard very early in it's life due their failures and maybe a few extending their life not by much with hack job gas engine transplants.

I had a 6.0 liter F.O.R.D., if I pulled a trailer, the 4 bolts around each cylinder ( should be SIX) would allow the head gaskets to leak. This put 2,000 psi power pluses into the coolant. The radiator cap would TRY to release the over pressure ( 16 psi cap). That pressure would go to the plastic bottle and blow antifreeze on the window & the cars windows around me. Called a tow truck to haul to Ford dealer (still under warranty) the FORD tech. said everything is fine. No problem. Ford refused to replace headgaskets. The next day, towing a trailer, the coolant pressured up and exploded the E.G.R. cooler. This time I did NOT call a tow truck. I drove the P.O.S. home. The Puppet Of Everything if there front suspension was a lil stronger and there transmission was better , and if I planned on tuning and deleting the emissions right away then yeah the new 6.7 Cummins have way to many issues with the emissions and it makes them very weak compared to the competition and the fuel economy wasn’t any better in my experience I’d say maybe within a single mpg are within margin of era ... Also as far as lasting forever no body is buying these trucks to last for 20 years nowdays you will trade it in if your buying a $80k truck you most likely will be able to afford to get a new one and if not the 6.7 power stroke right now on fleets locally are at 375.000 and nothing significantly replaced mechanically, same as the duramax work trucks and the Cummins all the new trucks last If not abused

My 6.4 has 319,000 miles. It was deleted when new and a tuner installed. Incredible power, empty just boils the dual rear tires and buries the boost guage. Of course I put all the factory emissions equipment back on it since I've owned it! Transmission at 278K only problem.
@21psd5 жыл бұрын
I've got an 08 (Job 1) 6.4 which is completely stock and has always had all scheduled maintenance/service done religiously. Yet it still has been plagued with problems, all being engine related. Leaking radiator (replaced), leaking head gasket causing over-pressurizing of coolant system (cab removal repair), oil leak at bedplate (cab removal & engine removal repair), HP fuel pump failure (cab removal replacement), exhaust temp sensor failed (1 failed but replaced all 3) including a new DPF, exhaust temp sensor failed on up pipe (replaced). All instances, except radiator and oil leak, took several trips to dealership service dept. in order to diagnose because no codes were initially stored and it only gave us problems when under load while towing our RV. At these times we would experience reduced power (limp mode) and/or blowing white smoke, both of which would temporarily go away after doing a shutoff/restart. Fortunately all covered under extended Premium Care warranty, which I've renewed twice because of trucks history, at $3200 a pop. Switching to a 2021 6.7 when current warranty expires the end of next year. The 6.4 was a disaster as was the 6.0. Ford Motor Company did the right thing by ending their relationship with Navistar. So far,, I have heard/read nothing but positives about the 6.7 since its rollout in 2011, both privately owned and with fleet trucks.
@jimmysturdevant98435 жыл бұрын
Crittergitter 10 lol are you seriously implying that just because it has “regular maintenance” (which is a lie) means it’ll last? Using the wrong oil filter in any Navistar is certain death for the engine. Quality maintenance is needed. I serviced 6.4 fleets when I worked for Ford and they never had any major issues ever. 500k+ bone stock. I daily drive one and never would buy anything else.

@KevinJames-yg9eu2 жыл бұрын
There seems to be one key point missing here. Ford was responsible for the majority of the problems with the 6.4L Powerstroke. Ford was already planning their own engine, and the 6.4L was their experiment into making a diesel engine run. The 6.4L wasn't the last straw. The 6.0L was, and Navistar already knew it was at the end. The 7.3L and 6.0L Powerstrokes were essentially the same engines Navistar put in International trucks, just a different color of paint. Ford bought a cheapened version of the 6.4L longblock from Navistar. The turbochargers, fuel system, EGR, DOC, DPF, etc. were all Ford's own doing. I'm not saying that the 6.4L used in International trucks wasn't a piece of shit in its own right, but you can't blame Navistar for how bad it was in Ford trucks. Knowing Ford was soon to be gone, Navistar came up with the TerraStar truck, equivalent to the F450 and F550, in an effort to recover some of the market for their V8 engine as a justification for continuing to produce it. Obviously that worked well, given that the V8 is long gone, the Indianapolis Engine Plant and Indianapolis Casting Corporation have been leveled, and that class of International truck is now a rebadged Chevy.

As issues that plauged the 6L power-stroke really strained ford and Navistar's relationship when after the 6.4 power-stroke's production run ended had the pair end their relationship when ford took lessons from the three decades of engines built first by international harvester and later Navistar to develop an entirely new engine to meet current and future emissions standards when ford came out with the 6.7 power-stroke.
