6.2 Diesel CUCV glow plug resistor bypass and front battery failure symptoms

This is why I converted my m1009 to a full 12v system. Change to a civi 12v starter, remove the glow plug resistor, remove one alternator and have the remaining alternator do all the charging.

There are times a 12 volt conversion is tempting. But, I sure like the 24 volt starter motor. Thanks for watching.

I bought 2 trucks that had this resister bypass performed. But in extremely cold weather they couldn’t start. A easy fix was to put a relay in with a switch. Run it in bypass most of the time if it’s -10 flip it back to resister.

Hi Tim got another question on my m1008 cucv it's got manual glow plug button. How long should I hold it on before cranking? I've been turning the key llon and holding button 10 sec. I'm in Florida. Thanks

What glow plugs do you have? The CUCV trucks came with Delco 13G glow plugs. they heat up very fast but do not self regulate. 10-15 seconds above 40° should be ok. Taking it to 18 seconds or so when cold is ok. But, I would be careful to go more than 20 seconds with those glow plugs. The 60G plugs from Delco are self regulating. Which means you can press the button until the batteries are dead and nothing bad will happen. However, they take a bit longer to heat up. I do a 15 count with my 60G’s on every cold start when above 60°. 20 count down to 40° or so then a 25 count below freezing. I guess I should do a video about this….

@@timsteachablemoments1786thanks Tim I'm not sure what plugs I have, just bought the truck and this is my first cucv. I've been holding the button for 10 sec and it's been working fine. Just wanted to make sure I'm not hurting anything. So far I have no complaints other than being slow on the road I'm not pushing it over 40 mph. At 45 my tack is pushing 3000 rpm. I'm in Florida and I'm running 15/40 rotella in it. Think I should put a Lucas oil additive in? I dropped the trans pan and put a new filter and fluid. Shifts hard but good. Repacking front wheel bearings today.

Being a non turbo charged engine the oil isn’t getting taxed all that much. Just make sure it has oil and drive. That rpm sounds kind of high. What tach do you have and how is it powered? Have you been to Steelsoldiers.com yet? These topics are discussed just about daily there.
