In the last video we sound tested the Morgan-McClure x pipe boom tube exhaust with the regular speed engineering LS swap headers on the car and it did not sound right. I theorized the massively unequal length headers were the culprit for the less than desirable raspy sound. I have spent the last month or so of my free time custom fabricating equal length headers by cutting up the old ones! The spread from longest to shortest primary is less than 1.5" across all 8 cylinders. They feed into used NASCAR tri Y (4-2-1) collectors into the exact same Kodak car x pipe boom tube exhaust from before. Will it change the sound? Lets find out!
AG1 by Athletic Greens is a comprehensive, nutrition drink engineered to fill the nutritional gaps in your diet and support your body’s nutritional needs across four pillars of health: Gut health, Immune support, Energy and Recovery! Sounds awesome making or modifying headers is a pain. At least with the tools I have. When I saw the first video of this series I knew that #4 xpipe was the way. I made something kind of similar using 2 180° bends and added the crossover tubes. Had to modify some Ram long tube since no one make them for Dakotas. Hopefully it sounds similar to your set but a little quieter. One last thing you should look up david vizard. He was written tons of books and hotrod articles. He also has a youtube channel There is an article from one of his books on headers and exhaust. It covers primary tube diameter and length. Plus secondary diameter and length. According to David the primary length is not too important. Just try to prevent all exhaust pulses for entering the collector all at one time. According to David the secondary is where all the magic happens. He give charts based on cfm flow of the exhaust port and approximate hp or tq. I can't find the article right now but if I stumble on it again I'll link it.

Man well done on the equal length headers. I have owned a few off the shelf "equal length" headers but watching you explain how your thought process went into the final product made perfect sense to me. The sound difference to the casual person probably was nothing big but what a huge difference it actually made. The up and down was so crisp and clean now. Can't wait to hear it on the dyno or out on the road under some load. Side bar, how about that power stance at 24:52 haha Keep up the awesome work, excited to see the rest of this series and get even more ideas about building sound profiles for different engine combinations.

7:05 - yep i'm still following and having same thoughts, main idea is to pair cylinders that are as far apart as possible in the firing order. Gases going past the "emptiest" tube will scavenge a vacuum in it, helping exhaust to have better flow

What you're describing in the recording differences is how each device's software handles what in recording terms is called "compression". Since your channel is now quickly become a channels about sound, you should invest in some dedicated sound recording equipment, like some of the Zoom devices, and learn to add and sync the audio to the video. You don't have to spend a lot on a zoom recorder and decent mic.

Hey man, might be a bit late on this, but have you checked out Icengineworks header modeling system? They have a few different kits but their turbo modeling kit has a mode that can allow for easy (relatively speaking) assurance that the sections will be equal centerline length. Trick-tools has a couple videos on them, and it seems they can really help take the headache out of the process. My idea is to measure the clearance between vital components and get a jig mocked up to make the work easier on my back and not have to slide in and out from underneath the car as much. Over the past few months, I have done an insane amount of research into equal length V8 headers. Nick Kautz and a few others are absolute geeks about exhaust sound tuning.

I'm watching your welding sequence and seeing you clean/sharpen the tungsten every time you dipped it made me want to share something I do to prevent that. I tend to break my tungstens into 3 or 4 pieces when I pull them out of the package and then keep a half dozen of them sharpened up. That way I don't have to get up when I dip. I can just swap tungsten and keep on rocking. Saves having to reposition yourself and get comfortable again. I find it is not just a time saver but also saves a lot of frustration getting set back up after sharpening.

Awesome!!! As a fellow sound-nerd I got a few suggestions that may be helpful in your journey to emulate NASCAR sound... 1.) The primary vs. tertiary length of 4-2-1 headers has a lot to do with the engines cam events; VERY generally speaking you could manipulate the sound a bit by changing the length of ONLY the 2-1 portion of the collector, and based on my experience you may get more of the sound you want if you were to SHORTEN the 2-1 portion of the collector by a few inches IMOP. 2.) The 5" primary length difference "acceptability" you mentioned on cup-car headers was done intentionally by SOME teams to attenuate pulse arrival times to the collector, and to compliment the differences in intake runner lengths of a traditional single plane carbureted intake manifold; per the SBC firing order cylinders 4, 6 & 7 was be a bit longer, 2, 3, & 5 was be a bit shorter compared to the "nominal / ideal" length of # 1 & 8 primaries....this could be partially "simulated" cheaply is with a temperature difference of each primary due to the speed of sound by fully wrapping 2, 3, & 5, then only partly wrapping cylinders 1 & 8, and NOT wrapping 4, 6, & 7 at all with heat wrap.....this theoretically should smooth the sound if applied to the CORRECT cylinder #'s on your LS, using the SBC firing order (the idea was it increased time between pulses of 90-degree separated cylinders / shortened time between pulses of 270-degree separated cylinders, within each bank individually, making it more like a 180-degree header). 3.) The choke diameter of the final merge of the 2-1 collector is based on a bunch of factors, but its purpose is mainly to act as 1-way check valve to limit reversion; given your LS has different exhaust pulse velocity / volume & temperature compared to a cup-car engine, that COULD be partly responsible for the reversion burbles "aka-down-tone" difference. A product designed to combat reversion is (AR-chambers), and they're added to the end of the collector like an extension.....Schoenfeld, Hendren Racing, DynaTech, & ProFabrication all market them as "anti reversion mufflers"......Given it would be an experiment / may not result in the sound change you're looking for, I'd pick Schoenfeld purely from a cost perspective, if you decide to give it a go. Keep up the good work 👍 I'm excited to see the upcoming videos on this project!!!

That’s very interesting! I was told in a perfect scenario the secondary 2-1 pipes should be the same length as the primaries but that is something we are going to experiment with for sure. Superspeedway cars had long ones. It seemed to be longer than other configurations. The ones on this car were labeled superspeedway with a piece of tape when I got them. Whatever that’s worth 😂

@@Stapleton42 There's a lot involved in the primary vs. tertiary lengths / ratio's......I don't claim to be an expert though I've studied on this topic a fair bit, but I don't think I could articulate it clearly without it being really long.....i can say; if you look at 4-2-1 header designs "over-time" the trend has been primary lengths getting longer and secondary lengths getting shorter as engine technology has progressed.....the primary progression of the last 30-years or so has been in cylinder heads, and these airflow improvements have lead to cam events (in general) being more radical and with less duration than in the past.....with less duration, there is (in general) less overlap and LCA's have trended wider, therefore the cylinder to cylinder interference & scavenging window in crank degrees has changed quite a bit as well........there's a fair amount of info on Speed-Talk in post by "Exhausted" (Calvin Elston) if your interested in the theory as to why.......My theory is the Super-Speedway-Cup-Engines probably have very nonconventional valve events / camshaft compared to there non-restricted short track engines to combat the effects of the restrictor plate, and this is likely part of the reasoning for the specific lengths / ratios picked.........The ONE thing I can accurately confirm though, is the total length of a 4-2-1 header should be similar to a 4-1 header if you intend it to be tuned to the same RPM operating range, so the final length with the 2-1 collectors on should be measured on your setup (IMOP anything from 28" to 38" should work fine but, will "tune-in" from 4500-rpm to 7500-rpm on depending on the length vs. cam events)......final note on the ratio's, take the measurements from the 4-2-1 Yates-ARCA & Dodge-Cup headers you have, the length of the primary's is likely 2X-to-4X the secondary's length, possibly due to the reasons I mentioned above.

@@ericschumacher5189 as someone who's very interested in the way engines sound, whats the best place to read up on header design? for me the sound comes first, even above power so it's hard finding hardware that sounds the best
@ericschumacher5189

@@veganjoy sorry for the double reply; I misread your post.....the best reading on header design is on the website SpeedTalk contained in posts and threads by Calvin Elston "Exhausted" is his profile name. In terms of the sounds produced by different header designs, the primary sound a header will make is controlled by the engines architecture and it's firing order, beyond that the sound can be manipulated "somewhat" by how equal the lengths are of each header primary, and how they collect together (basically how smoothly each pulse follows the next).....an extreme example for better understanding is compare the sound of a Subaru Boxer engine with a factory UEL manifold vs. an EL manifold, then compare any Honda with a 4-1 vs 4-2-1 header.....If you have any questions on an specific application I can try to help answer you here, if I have experience with it.

@@ericschumacher5189 speaking of boxers, i looked at UEL headers for BRZs a while back and they didnt get the subie rumble like a WRX as far as i could tell. thought that was weird. the crappy engine sound is one of my biggest complaints about those cars. but yeah i've got a c6 vette so i've always had my eye on good headers, mine just has whatever cheapo one the previous owner slapped on. sounds good but not great. seems like fitment is cramped for vettes though so not a lot of options. 180 degree headers would be extra cool but i dont think anyone's figured out packaging for that in a vette. other thing is i'm planning on getting a k20 civic soon and i'm hoping i can avoid making it sound terrible like most hondas lol. it'd be cool if i could get it sounding like my buddy's cbr600 but i'm guessing there's something inherently different between car and motorcycle engines besides size

Just a heads up if you didn't know, a stock LS exhause port configuration matches almost exactly a ford. Heard of many prople cutting off the flange on ford headers to put an LS into mustangs, If all nascar type headers are pretty much the same as far as shape and would fit your car, then maybe find a ford Nascar type from the 90's nascar cars and adapt as needed

The size of the tube dose not really affect the horsepower. Engine master with David friedburger proved I can bash a pipe to half it's diameter and the HP is exactly the same.

Check out videos explaining the tesla valve.! Once you have them to the extension for the exhaust tip. Build your own chambered tail pipes. You will see what a boom tube is like on the inside, so you can control the sound.

You didn't waste your time. The full length sound better at least from a recording. I'm sure it sounds better in person. Kinda like how bass sounds in person vs a recording. It would be interesting to see what the difference is with a decimal meter.

I once added a loop downstream of the passenger side headers on a GMT800 to try to equal out the length of the pipes prior to coming together with an X-pipe. Back in 2005 it was the best sounding GMT800 out there. I love videos like this because most people don't understand it until they see it. In my case, people thought I was nuts that I even had the idea until they heard the truck.
