Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

The Barrel burning argument does not wash with me. The second rifle I bought with my own money was a Remington 700 BDL in 7mm RM. I pretty much had it set up with a fixed 4x Leupold and I did have a bedding job done along with some trigger work. In the 50 years that I had the rifle, I never come close to shooting the barrel out. So even if that is the case, it doesn't take much to have a new barrel chambered and installed.

The 6.5 Creedmore is the new shiny. In truth there are plenty of older rounds that are as good on game if not better then it. Where the Creedmore shines is what it was meant to do in the first place. Target shooting at long but known distances. It's long for caliber, heavy bullets carry their velocity really well but don't have much to begin with. If you are shooting lighter bullets it's just an under loaded 260 Remington. I'm with you for hunting I wouldn't trade my 7 mm Mag any time soon. Same goes for my 30-06 It'll kill game farther than 99% of us have a business shooting.

Burning out the barrel is all about acceptable accuracy. Obviously you haven’t burned out your barrel to your standards. It is probably well within minute of deer. I also doubt you are shooting quickly enough or enough rounds to get serious erosion. However, someone who shoots long strings of fire at 1000yds may burn out a 6.5-284 in a thousand rounds. That barrel may still shoot 1/2 moa which is probably not good enough to win a match.

I would say having used one for a time the 7mm is as good as the others. One reason not to change is the confidence you have with your rifle from using it. The choice I might make is buying 280 Remington that makes for a little lighter rifle but is very close to 7mm mag performance. They shoot well with 160gr bullets and lighter ones too. I never tried 175gr bullets but, never saw the need for them. However; Africa is whole different place from hunting in America. A one rifle hunter often knows their rifle better than one who has a gun case full different ones. ✨🤠✨

Sowed the seeds of doubt, but you don't have to water them. Brilliant quote, Ron. Too often we give up a good thing simply because others said we should. In the world of hunting people get attached to their pet rounds and will say anything to get others to agree that their pet is the best there is simply because it's an ego boost. But often times they are just squawking about what they know and wouldn't understand if they were actually the ones missing out or not because they never bother to do any research. Around my neck of the woods it's a generational bias. If grand daddy and daddy used it then it must be the best thing to use. These guys never stop to consider that grand daddy and daddy may have had to use what they had available and would have gladly tried something else if they had access. None of the rounds this fella's friends use are superior in any meaningful way. Nor are any of them inferiors in normal situations. Just different. But when you have to resort to garbage arguments like barrel life you know someone is reaching. Or when the reloading argument is brought up in a crowd of guys who don't reload. Keep using your 7MM young man for there is no such thing as the perfect cartridge just variations on a theme. The number of rounds that fall within a ten percent power, range and recoil spectrum of each other in any given caliber is mind boggling.

There is really no need to talk about the 9.3x62. It's an old cartridge (predates the 30/06). No belt, not on a 404 case, not a cartridge you'd use for a 900 yard shot on an elk (remember when game was spotted and the hunter planned a stalk ?). John "Pondro" Taylor had a lot of respect for the cartridge. Gun writers today write about what's new. Seriously, if that wasn't the case, the old 6.5x55 would be used more often. The 30/06, when properly loaded, is capable of taking EVERY game animal on earth. In fact, Eleanor O'Connor took an elephant with her rifle and a tiger. Only old farts like us hunt with the 9.3x62 (and never lost a game animal).

None of these cartridges is ideal or specifically designed for hunting large animals. They happened to be the easiest ammunition to acquire, due to volume, that's all. Taking into account acceptable recoil for most people, therefore likelihood of shooting accurately and repeatedly, along with moderate pressure, long barrel life and a versatility which transalates to ease of finding factory ammunition or handloading, legality (in Africa, especially), along with a 110 year pedigree to support its ability to harvest any game on earth, with style, grace and a vodka martini waiting for it in the cabinet..... That's true. It all comes down to what you're hunting and where. If you're hunting whitetail in most of the eastern half of the USA, a 30-30 will kill a deer just as well as a 30-06. Most shots will be less than 150 yards. As you go west, that changes quickly though. If your shots are 200+ yards and the wind is blowing 20+mph...You need more aerodynamic bullets with more velocity. If I'm hunting pronghorn in Wyoming I'd take a 6.5PRC over a 30-06.

There's no benefit inside of 300 yards. A 30-06 will kill just as fast and do it with a shorter barrel, lighter rifle, cheaper ammo and 25% more mag capacity. If you regularly shoot past 300 step up to one of the 300 mags. It all depends on where and how you hunt. It's more about the hunter than the cartridge or rifle. If your goal is speed and flat shooting skip the 30-06 7mm mag ect and go for one of the weatherby, nosler, or ultra mags. I have never been to a gun store to buy ammo and they had 30-06 and didn't have 7 rem mag ammo. A 30-06 with 165gr bullet will not have the energy of a 7 rem mag with a 162gr. Not at any distance. That's just a fact. It's like says an F150 can carry as much weight as an F250 or F350.

I have 6.5 creedmoor. I shoot it. I like the round just fine. But I definitely wouldn’t go for anything in Africa larger than a dikdkik with the creedmor. You’re always better off with a magnum…. Of course the barrel efficiency is better, it’s cheaper, and it hurts less with the creedmoor… But dang… how many shots SHOULD it take to get down game? Two maximum. If it takes more and you’re burning up barrels, you’re a bad shot and an unethical hunter…..

Don’t normally comment on hunting caliber topics cause it’s always one guys opinion vs another guys opinion but I feel suitably qualified to comment on this topic..why??well cause just like Cory I live in South Africa and have been hunting for the last 20 years with a 7mm Remington magnum..I also own and hunt with a .308win and a 6.5 Creedmoor and a few other calibers(yes I know I have a problem)I can honestly say that all these calibers have their own wheelhouse and can be used reliably on a large variety of species in South Africa providing you take the time to become proficient at shooting them..would I attempt to shoot an Eland with a 6.5? No I would not..would I hunt an Eland with my .308 with a well constructed bullet at reasonable hunting range? Absolutely yes..The most wounded animals I have seen with my own eyes while hunting have been attributed to poor shot placement and not shortcomings of a particular caliber…having said that the large majority of hunting outfitters and landowners would discourage you from hunting with incorrect calibers for your chosen species as well as the fact that in the province that I live in our department of agriculture forestry and fisheries released an annual hunting proclamation that dictates minimum required calibers for different species..having said all that if I was put on the spot and had to make a choice which one I would take to hunt for the next 20 years it would probably be the 7mm Rem…I’ve got a soft spot for it..p.s Ron love the videos 👍🏻

To re-barrel a rifle in South Africa is not easy, it takes a minimum of 6 months and more likely at least a year. Finding ammo for a 7mm Rem Mag is also a lot more difficult than for a 308 or 30-06. A 7x64 in SA is a much better option here. Buying a second rifle to target shoot means buying another scope & mounts. Depending on budget there are three options, keep the 7mm for hunting and buy something else for target shooting or just hunt and don't do a lot of target shooting or sell the 7mm and get a 30-06 or 7x64. I am a big fan of 7mm's but in SA a .30 cal makes more sense for ammo availability and finding rifles in those chamberings.

I own most of them and 7mmRUM is all day caliber. If you like the 300win then you should defiantly love the 7mm I love that round. I think his friends are just showing off with their 6.5creed since it’s a fairly new caliper I own plenty 6.5s but like Ron said if you face that huge game you really need the 7mm one shot one kill instead of fooling around with few shots of 6.5 Creed to put the game down now unless you are a professional and you put that 6.5 creed in between the eyes every time then I would assume you will be happy with the 6.5 Creed who doesn’t want less recoil on their shoulder?

The 7mm Rem Mag is one of my favorites, had several over the years but currently without one sadly. One thing I haven't seen in the comments regarding the 6.5 Creed is barrel life. I have one that I handload for and after doing research on it I was shocked to find out that the bullets required to make it the "darling" it's made out to be have stupid long bearing surfaces that wear out barrels giving it short barrel life. In some cases sub 3000 rounds making it more of a "barrel burner" than the magnums that have that stigma attached to them. However someone that handloads can negate that easily depending on what they want or need it to do. Keep your tried and true 7mm and if you can pick up a good 308 to supplement, they can have a barrel life of 5-10k rounds without having to do anything special to get them there.

I have both calibers and live here in SA. Both have exceptional points of value. But make no mistake, the rem Mag is a MUCH more versatile hunting caliber. If hand loading, there is no difference in ammo complements and availability. The Creedmoor ammo is cheaper - only marginally. But the 7mm Rem Mag in SA conditions - not even a doubt - a better hunting caliber.

The 7mm Rem Mag will kill ANNYTHING! that draws air on Planet Earth, Period! However there are better choices. I've killed most every game animal in North America and some Exotics. In my Old age I don't seem to handle the weight and recoil of my rifle as I did in my youth. I transitioned to a 22" bbl 270 Win and found that It worked well. Later I discovered a 20"bbl Rem 7/08 mm in a even lighter rifle. With proper marksmanship it kills as well as the old 7 mag. OBTW, a good hand loader could tailor that 7 mag to meet about any need. I know my comment is a little late, but I agree with the smaller, lighter gun for smaller game. I have a Remington 7mm mag and I like it because it shoots fast, flat, and hard. When my daughter was ready to hunt with me (Mule deer and elk) we decided on a 7mm-08 since we reload. Good, solid advice. I am South African raised, and I totally agree. And all you have to do, with any gun, to extend barrel life when practicing, is not shoot rapidly. Take your time. I went 7 over 30 cal because the big 30s are far over kill for deer where I can do everything with my 7 if I need a back up or second deer rifle like I do this year since a friend of mine will be using my 270 when we go after mule deer.

I’ve harvested at least 60 deer with my 7mm, a dozen moose or more, Elk and lots of black bear. I’ve never felt under gunned. I have no issue shooting single hole 3 shot groups at 200yds with my hand loads and my mildly worked M700. Shots on deer under 100yds do waste a lot of meat but at least I’ve never had to track one down. I’ve had deer walk around like they weren’t even shot with my .243 and with the 7mm they just pile up on the spot with the same shot placement. 154gn hornady interbonds with IMR-4831 pushing has always been a good combo. The Hornady 162gn SST has been a good shooting and performing bullet for me as well. I love my 7mm Rem Mag and it is my go to calibre. With a muzzle break it’s a tame little pussy cat!

I never understand people saying “you’ll shoot the barrel out” (hunting rifle) If you shoot every week/weekend then maybe. If you’re hunting, you maybe use 3-4 boxes to sight in (barrel break in included if you go that route). And then after that maybe another 2-3 boxes of ammo. 2,000 rounds of 7mm rem mag is a lot, I don’t see the average Hunter burning out their barrel. If you plan to shoot that much and have the money, buy a “precision” rifle where swapping out barrels would be easier than a hunting rifle (yes hunting rifle barrels can be swapped, but most factory barrels are a pain in the butt to remove).

If you're going to pay the bill to make a big hunt to Africa (or Alaska or...) then don't sweat the cost of one or two boxes of ammo. If I'm saving up for that hunt and choice is between 7mm Rem Mag in hand or buying a new .308 Win, I'm certainly willing to pinch a few more pennies to get the $45/box premium ammo rather than buy a new (and less capable, less versatile) rifle so I can get similar ammo at $35/box or (worse) cheap ammo of questionable performance at $17/box.

"It has less recoil." There's got to be a point at which this doesn't matter. A .22 WMR recoils more than a .22 LR, but the added recoil has zero impact on my ability to shoot accurately and with precision. I handily shot "expert" on US Navy & Army courses with the 5.56 in an M-16, and recoil doesn't affect my ability to shoot .243 Win or .7mm-08 accurately & precisely. If someone can fire one or two or five shots from a 7mm Rem Mag without concern for the recoil, then switching to .308 Win (for example) is not going to improve accuracy, at least not on the basis of recoil. i.e., if you've got a recoil issue with 7mm Rem Mag recoil issue then either work it out or do make a change to a less recoiling cartridge/rifle combo... but if not, then recoil management is not a good reason to switch.
