decent brass for the western a real issue as is rifles offered except the two companies releasing it. seems like reloading components have improved. the western with 175 grain ammo could offer what so many want without exceeding recoil levels handled. the new 156 grain PRC in right length PRC barrel could be same.

The 6.8 Western is a much better cartridge than the 6.5 PRC. The 6.5 PRC was much better marketed. This is what Hornady does well. You know if Winchester/Browning had not come out with the 6.8 Western, Hornady would have released the 6.8 PRC. It would be marketed as the most perfect cartridge. I know I am right on this one. Hornady would never let the 6.8 be. And we would have 178 eld-x and 175 eld-m bullets. Now Hornady pretends the 6.8 doesn’t even exist.
@jimedick94969 ай бұрын
@@jw3946 I have both, but if I could only have one, it’s the 6.8 Western. Between the two, the 6.8 Western is the perfect all around cartridge. It can take deer, elk, antelope, bear, and moose ethically. It can do it with terrific accuracy and at long range. It’s a short action which allows for lighter rifles. It’s efficient using barrels as short as 20”. The PRC can maintain effectiveness down to 22”. Not a big deal, but between the shorter barrel and shorter action, you can reduce a rifles weight enough to really notice. Bullet weight and ballistics is right there on the heels of the 7 PRC. It does this with lighter recoil and lighter rifles. This isn’t trashing the PRC’s. I love mine, and they are terrific cartridges. This is a general statement that the 6.8 Western takes the best of both PRC’s into one cartridge. The only hit the 6.8 Western has is ammo support. That may change soon. ADG brass is looking to manufacture the 6.8 Western later this year.

@@justafloridamanfromthe75thRR He mentioned the Recoil of 6.5 PRC being equal to .30-06, but according to shooterscalculator and Nosler Loads, the 6.5 PRC is pretty much on par with .308/.270 Win recoil, whereas the 6.8 Western is comparable to the .30-06.... I wouldn't say that is all that noticeable with a well setup rifle. Maybe at the range, with a higher volume of fire, but just for that '1 shot' of hunting.. I doubt it'd make a big difference. Personally, I'd love a custom .270 WSM, running those 165gr AccuBond Long Range at about 3000fps. Similar, but slightly better ballistics vs the .300 WSM running the 190gr ABLR, just a bit less energy and significantly less recoil.

I've seen videos of people saying 6.5 PRC kicks less than a .270win. I own .308, .270, .30-06, and just sold my .300 wsm to purchase a 6.5 PRC. After putting 4 shots of 143gr target ammo, I looked at my friend that was with me and had him shoot it. He of which also owns a .270, and has shot all of my rifles, follows up with "Well that definitely kicks more than any .270 I've shot." He and I both agree it kicks like a .30-06 with 165gr-178gr. And for anyone saying we're full of it, I'm 5'6" at 150lbs and he's 6'4" at 325lbs. We both think the same. Thanks for the reality check on recoil figures.

I have seen all kinds of crazy 270 win comparisons with the prc. I own a bergara approach and just chronographed 3 factory loads with it. The 130 terminal ascent is averaging around 3,100 fps. The rifle has a muzzle break but you can tell it still has a fast recoil impulse and it is angry. It's a magnum. I have seen so many crazy comments, one person said the prc is a good target gun but not even close to as effective a hunting round within 400 yards. If the prc is shooting faster and better sd with the same bullet weight, why isn't it as good. Die hard 270 guys really can't wrap their minds around it and I think it's the name "prc". They don't realize its a magnum.

Compare the 6.8 to the 7mm Rem Mag after I did that and noticed very little difference in performance and having a few in my safe I purchased the 6.5 prc.I love shooting the 300B in fact at the range today I shot one and had a nice little sub moa group,nice.Last year I took the PRC to the range on a very cold very windy day.With factory ammo I grouped on a dime.I am not a match shooter my goal with heavy hitters is sub moa.This group with the PRC was something very different for me and I was very impressed.The rem 7mag matches the 6.8 I could not get my hands around why I would want one other than that then maybe.The 6.5 prc is really an awesome shooting gun.It outdid all my expectations.

Hands down the best new rounds that aren't a magnum round but magnum numbers!! The 6.8 Western is hitting 17% harder then the 6.5 PRC very similar case but ya got the bigger caliber and thats why its hitting harder, dang near identical brass....the .277 / 6.8 is really the ideal caliber for speed, especially bench shooting, 6.5 is great for bench shooting as well. When it comes to Ballistic Coefficient the .338 Norma Mag is up there at the top hence why they special forces picked that round along with the .300 Norma Mag. I have a Christensen MPR in. 300 Win Mag so my next build will be the 6.8 Western a Christensen Titanium with a Gunwerks can it really does tighten the groups the technology on these cans, rounds, rifles, barrels are amazing! Makes ya wonder what took them so long to copy the 6.5 Swede and be like hey we like the way these shoot. And then add some extra rifling twist lol...Ive always loved the .270 WSM I thought that round has always been about as good as it gets in a short action. Most everyone wants short action rifles because they already have their magnum rifles. Like the 7 PRC its a magnum round, doesn't make sense to me other then for opening the pocket book. Winchester said the 6.8 Western is the new .270 WSM and boy it really does some hard hitting for a short action round and getting that straight shooting rifle instead of doing more adjusting for the .308 ballistics but hey the .308 will always be around, I think the 6.5 PRC out of all 3 will be the one that sticks around, I also think the 6.8 Western is catching on fire and the loads these guys are making are very very very impressive!! The 6.8 Western will be the round that really takes off, it really already is!!!

I went back and forth with these two for awhile. I ended up with a 6.5 prc for several reasons: 1st I worried about longevity and if 6.8 western was going to be available down the road 10 years 2nd, I reload and brass options are better for the prc. you can get winchester/browning brass but that's about it with the western where as the prc has lapua options along with a lot other quality brass. The biggest knock on the prc for me will be barrel life. I'll be looking at a new barrel within 3 years most likely. Either way it was a good comparison, though with reloads they really go neck and neck with the western having more energy downrange. Think most people would be happy with whichever they choose.

@JW-wi1nf2 жыл бұрын
The real reason Hornady doesn't support the 6.8 Western is because, they plan to release a 7mm PRC in 2022 or 2023. That's low on Hornady's part, in my opinion, to not publish reloading data for the 6.8 Western! It should be up to the shooter to decide the cartridge/caliber based on their shooting needs. The 6.8 Western is the modern replacement of the 270 Win, because it has a faster twist for higher BC bullets, plus it's a short action cartridge. That's a win for individuals who love the 270 Win and for those hunters who want to shoot a heavier bullet that's not available in 6.5 PRC.

I like the .264 WM because the 6.5 bullet availability is cataching up with the .284s and .308s. The .270 bullets are rare and most lack decent BCs. The .264 WM although is loosing steam because of slow twist rates , the PRC just can't kepp up in terms of energy and rebated bullets with high BCs are generally short enough to stabilize which means handloading select bullets may be needed. Speer Gold Dot 140gr is a bonded high BC tactical bullet that can stabilize and hold together in high velocity impacts but weight retention suffers. Speer Impact 140gr bonded is also high BC bullet and according to reports it's as long as the nosler partition which is about to hit the market soon. There are 6 different factory ammo available in the .264 WM and that still beats the 6.8 westerns factory ammo availability 4.

I'm thinking a poll is a fun idea to see what everyone thinks. I agree with you the PRC can take elk just fine. With that being said I've always preferred bigger cartridges... hence why I have a 300 Weatherby.

I saw his video on that. Not sure how I feel about shooting game at that distance. Ron obviously has a lot of experience.... but still

Ron Spomer is not the average Joe DeerTag who buys a license the day before a season opener, goes and plops his fat, beer guzzlin' butt in the woods, sees a glimpse of something that looks like antlers, and starts blastin'...even though he may not have fired his rifle since the last time he sighted it in. He's an acclaimed gun sports and field writer, life-long hunter, and shooter. He's been doing it all, and makes a living at it as part of his professional career. That's a huge difference in my opinion, than just saying because he did it at that distance with a 6.8 Western, or any caliber for that matter, maybe anyone else can, or should try do it too.

I wanted to buy a 6.8 Western rifle. Considering the US Army is buying the 6.8x51 cartridge. The future looks good. Even though the military cartridge is 80,000 psi. The bullets and cases are likely to become common. I have a .270 Win, a 6.5 Creedmore rifle, and a .308. The .308 sees the most range time, because I can buy the ammo. The faster twist 8:1 to 7:1 barreled rifles will likely dominate in the future. For this range of bullet calibers. But for less than 250 yards though. The .350 Legend is fairly good. And for the big game, a .450 Bushmaster will stop anything really big. And given that many people hunt in that range. The popularity will grow for those hunters. But in the areas where longer shots are common. The fast twist 6.5 to 7mm or .270 & .280 calibers will likely dominate over time. But for the 6.5 PRC or 6.8 Western question. The 6.8 Western may give a better barrel life. And is likely to have harder hitting bullets. But the 6.5 PRC is softer shooting. And is a slight upgrade from the 6.5 Creedmore. But the real winner will be determined by the overall availability and price of ammo. Which both have availabilty issues right now. I have not been hunting recently. And target practice with the rifle that I can buy ammo for that day. I will likely buy a 6.8 Western and the 7 PRC when it becomes available. The 6.5 PRC is not on my shopping list.

I don't think you have been paying much attention on all the chats and blogs, videos ect...but then again the 6.8 just came out year and half ago or so and people really laughed at it including me, but once they dug in and gave it a listen the last 6-8 months a LOT of rifles have been sold! But only time will tell but I can bet the farm that the 6.8 Western makes it especially with the videos and numbers Ive seen its a damn impressive round!!! And honestly the 6.5 PRC is as well its dang near same case just smaller diameter is all. The 7 PRC is strictly a money grab because they had the .300 PRC and I could have bought one, I chose .300 wm because the 26 inch carbon barrel brings the numbers back up to the PRC. Or just get the .300 WSM lol this stuff is getting out of control, I just wish they would focus on putting out new good ammo or a new powder, new twists in barrels or go make the old classics improved. Thats just my opinion and what ive seen is all

You gotta compare the same weight bullet in both calibers for it to be equal. Anytime you have a heavier bullet you're going to have more energy.
@adamtedder7002 жыл бұрын
7mm WSM and 300 WSM will have more energy than the 6.8 Western.
@ReloadingWeatherby2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting. I have the opposite thought on that. If I'm going to compare cartridges of different caliber I want to compare bullets with around the same b.c. or sectional density. That's kind of the point with bigger calibers is to get more energy. But with more energy comes more recoil.

Hornady just released the 7mm PRC which buries the 6.8 Western in every respect.

I did a video comparing the two. They are pretty close in performance. But I do think the 6.8 Western will fail
@msb29482 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the 6.8 doesn't have very good reloading versatility and in a real hunters hands the 270 WSM makes better effective use and range, as the 130-150 range withe a solid copper will do anything that 6.8 Western engine can muster in the real world. The latest Hodgdon reloading manual features the 6.8 Western and even there, the standard 270 holds it's own against it. The 6.5 PRC is very close to that 6.8 Western, but again that WSM 270 is even flatter. These two are the best example of being late to the dance as the 6.5 PRC should have come out before and in place of the 6.5 Creedmoor and the 6.8 Western should have come out before the 270 WSM. I have a fast twist re barreled 270 Winchester and a 264 Win mag that I wouldn't trade for either. The 6.5 PRC and 6.8 Western are what many consider stepping rungs on the ladder to real hunting cartridges. If only the 270 Weatherby and 27 Nosler we're more available, this topic would be done. Great job young man!

Its easy to say when looking at a screen, but there is a big difference between 500 and 600 yards. 400 to 600 yards is 50% farther. so to say these are close, not so much. The 6.8 is far superior round than the 6.5 PRC. Would like to see it compared to the RPM. When it comes to recoil, if a person isnt tough enough to handle the recoil for the proper round to hunt with. They need to shave off their man bun beard and put away the skinny jeans and grow a pair or stay home because they are not fit for the outdoors.

If you're contemplating a new high velosity rifle, and plan to step out of the realm of the tried and true 7 MM Remington Magnum cartridge, the 28 Nosler is the way to go. Forget these guys, and step up. It's a joy to shoot, easy to develop pin point handloads for, more down range punch, and a cinch for taking elk size or larger non-dangerous game. Trust me...You'll thank me for it later.
