Poets of the Fall is definitely one the most underrated Finnish bands around.

Raka makafoun ;) Nightwish, Poets of the fall (lift), Sonata Arctica. Von Hertzen Brothers (new day rising).

Nightwish - despite being in the "margin" (playing symphonic metal), they are the most successful band in Finnish history. They have sold over 11 million records worldwide (situation in 2016) and still running. Hanoi Rocks (without them there would not be Guns And Roses or Motley Crue, for example. Actually Motley's Vince Neil caused their drummer's death back in the days by and that was basically the end of Hanoi). HIM has sold around 10 million records, too, but they quit last year. Rasmus, Apocalyptica, Amorphis, COB etc. are somewhat smaller bands still. There are dozens new, yet smaller, but rising bands around. Most of them playing metal (Surprise?).
@Zyrac856 жыл бұрын
I have to correct you on for saying bands like COB being small.. They are one of Finland's best selling artists of all time with more than 250,000 records sold there alone.
@AgeofJP6 жыл бұрын
agreed...CoB might not be as well known but they are about as big as nightwish
@EsaValkama6 жыл бұрын
COB is big but they aren't that big. Looking at the likes on Facebook, NW has 4,3 million, COB has 2,6 million. Quite a big difference.
@OPJ19746 жыл бұрын
I did say smallER, not small :) In terms of figures, COB really is smaller band than NW. NW has 4,3 million FB followers. COB has 2,6. Same comparison rate applies for the instagram. The record sales statistics show that in Finland NW is placed currently #3 with 900k sold albums in total. COB is #72 with 250k. NW has sold around 11 million albums worldwide, COB around 2,5 million. Furthermore, NW has been headliner for the most major heavy metal festivals in Europe during the years, including Wacken. I believe COB has not done that yet (as far as I know)? Don't get me wrong, I don't want this turn to "mine is bigger than yours" debate, just stating the facts. Success is rather subjective matter anyway, sobasically only way to measure that is the numbers. And I don't want to take nothing away from them, either. I have huge respect for all of these bands, they have been real pioneers to get Finland on the heavy metal map.

To be fair Finnish metal bands like Nightwish and Stratovarius tend to be big internationally more often than any Finnish bands or artists or groups that do any other kind. So really there are more successful Finnish metal bands than any others. Then again most Finnish music that is sold internationally tends to be metal so there is that. Some other bands to check out are 69 Eyes, Lordi, Battle Beast, Beast in Black, Amorphis and Sonata Arctica. Also there are some lesser known ones that as well like Battlelore, Kiuas, Ensiferum and Turisas.

I'd like to know something (not in a negative way, more like curious) these bands you Dave mentioned, that you didn't know that they were from Finland, did you have some kind of idea where they might come from, or is it just you never thought about it? Just asking, because I had two years ago interesting conversation with Danish, Austrians, Germans and American about Finnish music, and one of them said that she thought that Nightwish is American band, and I was like "Wow cool! Nice to hear!" Because I felt it was some kind of compliment, BUT after that one other person asked that is Sunrise Avenue really Finnish band, and I was like, " Yeah it is...", and another person said, that " Oh, I thought it's Swedish band!" and I don't really remember what happened next because I fainted, only hearing that someone thought Finnish band is Swedish... So I'm asking just curiosity... And FYI it's really easy to find yourself from bottom of lake, if you say aloud that you thought that Finnish band/brand/artist/etc is Swedish... Just so you know... ;) Nice to watch your videos, thank you! :)

Finland has most metal bands/capita on Earth. Sweden is distant 2nd, and Norway almost as distant 3rd. I started listening music on purpose only in my late teens, but as any decent Finnish person, I went straight into the metal of the time, and have been digging deeper and deeper, heavier and heavier, and I will dig that way until I die. Not metal equals not music.

Finnish 80's hardcore punk is pretty influential among the somewhat smaller and marginal punk scene internationally (kinda "cult popularity"). Terveet Kädet, Rattus, Kaaos, Lama, Riistetyt, Appendix, Mellakka for example. And yeah Hanoi Rocks, but also band called Smack had kinda a short lived cult following in west coast USA. LA and such (Nirvana played Smacks songs and Cobain mentioned them in an interview).
