, like is he acting for the camera or is he really incapable of picking up dry wood that's all around him regardless of the rain in the swamp any real survival get dry wood out of that area right there it's everywhere around him, and how is he second-guessing himself and acting like he literally does not know what is more valid and functionally capable of doing in the time making a shelter or making a fire if you needed to make sense out of one or the other depending on the weather that he should make the fire first which can burn in the rain and create light which can help him finish any shelter or created temporary shelter and suffer through the night because it's likely not that cold where he's at and be just fine until the morning because that grass alone will keep him warm

This is really well done in that you show how you made mistakes. What doesn't work is just as important as what does. Showed me a few things I hadn't thought of when building a fire such as being miserably uncomfortable when soaking wet, the importance of dry wood, and overall immense patience and understanding when things don't go according to plan. Great job here.

if you know anything, you use fire lays that can easily burn wet wood, The Siberian fire lay burns logs from one end and an alternative Swedish fire torch will dry itself out from the inside. You can set fire to a tree in order to down it and to cut its trunk into usable lengths, but smart people carry 3 different types of saw blades and a modified Crunch multitool. The vicegrips of the Crunch will hold a saw blade while it's in use.

Great episode. People regularly underestimate just how hard it is to get fire, and how much prep you need to do, when things are truly soaked. Most people can't do it even with a lighter because most people don't practice when the conditions are like that. This is why this video is so good - it shows just how important it is to practice in the worst conditions. It also shows how much more practical it is to have a decent sized knife - it makes it so much easier to process the wood to get to the dry stuff inside when it is completely soaked outside. A little 4" knife just doesn't cut it during times like that.

The editing is on spot man, just wonderful! About the emergency/survival scenario, you're defiantly right... many people uploading videos or talking about survival and making shelters and so on in perfect conditions, but this's not the case in real life, if you all comfy and there's light or resources, it's not an emergency it's just camping... in real life situation you'll be miserable, cold, probably wet, it'll be dark, no materials, no fire and so on. It'll catch you unexpected and until you realize it, it'll be too late and you'll be in a real emergency and survival mode. Thanks for keeping it real and authentic, great video my friend!

This reminds me the first time I go on a hike on a mountain It was a highschool afterschool club, so there's a teacher accompany us students But the teacher method was always harsh and survival of the fittest kind of thing So his idea of us novice is to go on a hard mountain to hike, dodgy terrain, cold, and cliff everywhere On top of that it was the rainy season It was hell from the beginning to the top And few km from the top, we set up camp in some crazy bushy, damp area, it was 1 AM, he told us to make a shelter BUT, I didn't mention this, but the teacher forbid us to bring a tent, he told us to bring raincoat to make a poncho or to find a natural shelter 1 AM was heavy raining, but around 2 AM, it was storm, insane wind that we really have to hold ourself, many of our poncho came crumbling down, we had to make sure our friend didn't get hypothermia All of us set up 1 good shelter together for the weak, and then we make our own, many of us got rest at 4 am, when the storm was over, and we finally create semi decent shelter I had to go full nude and change all of my apparel, and so was my friend, it was grueling, but we all agree it was awesome and fun, and all of us legit become addicted to that kind of weather when camping, or hiking

Really enjoyed this. I have watched a lot of survival videos and always wondered how some of these techniques would translate into a wet and windy Irish environment.

Ay a good tip btw, if you're working with wet wood; build a small Teepee out of the twigs and rub tinder between your hands to break up the fibers in the plant. This helps give the plant much more exposure and will allow it to dry much faster

Great job to even get flame with a bow drill in those conditions. I'm personally very happy you decided to use a firesteel instead of having to suffer through the night, particularly since you didn't have any food. Of course if you really want to make things super hard on yourself you could bring along a second person whose entire job is just stand there and beat you with a stick.

No, he didnt. He kept suffocating it. Possibly on purpose to show how panic can set in or maybe just julius being julius * shrug * either way when he breaks out the fire steel you see him not fussing so much with it giving it a chance to bresthe and voila he has a fire.

Awesome video! I love and appreciate the realness of all that happened. So many bushcraft videos are polished & edited to make the person appear successful in everything they do, and in a real life situation that's just not how it happens. Thanks! You just got one more subscriber.

Enjoyed this although felt for you! I think I'd have packed up and gone home lol! The best part was your humility in defeat and knowing you had emergency equipment to effect fire when your own efforts failed! (Under those conditions, understandable even for the best of us) It would be a very poor survivalist who would need to be rescued or worse, because he succumbed to hypothermia due to him not being prepared enough to foresee the possibility or arrogant enough to believe it can't happen to him.. Well done! Wasn't pretty but it was reality!

This is what I call a survival video, not like the others that are more like 'Glamping'. Well done !! from someone who has been in the mountains for more then 50 years and as a guide. I found myself in this situation and no matter what ones skills are, nothing goes right . All you can do is try to keep your self warm and get back to base as quickly as you can and that's the reality of it No wonderful 'Bear Grilles' endings just a hard slog and uncomfortable situation. Cheers from NZ

The best idea I saw for walking is to keep the camera with the videographer. This guy Shiey does excellent documentaries with a selfie stick and shows himself walking from behind rather than showing the camera watching him walk away from it.
