Always just good gritty challenges that are real without any of the bullsh*t from most. I always have a lighter with some form of shelter and a knife like the one you were carrying. Either a tarp or a group shelter ( probably because I work Outdoors with groups every day) . Fantastic job as usual. Atb Rick n Billydog

Should make a difference in sleeping comfort compared to spruce :) But still mad respect for you for sleeping outside in a self built shelter to create content for us viewers. 9:23 I took an extra coat on my day hikes recently. Hiking in thermal underwear and an unzipped hoodie was way more than enough in 0°C but when I stopped moving for a few minutes I needed that coat and was still a little too cold.

In my outdoor-active days, I did carry a fire kit, not in my day pack but actually my canteen "pouch." I had a canteen with a canvas cover and belt clip, not popular these days. But I carried very small survival items inside the cover: fire kit, fishhooks and line, and emergency blanket. Once for fun (we didn't say "survival challenge" back then) I spent a night with just that and a knife. I slept in a shelter made with sticks tied together with fishing line, wrapped in emergency blanket, made a fire and caught a tiny fish.

Emergency space blanket + skis, ski poles = fine reflective top for your shelter. My recom. Is to fix space blanket with duct tape to your helmet .or in your innner pocket alvays when you go outdors. One or too litle candles + lighter makes you bomb proof !

i was in the scouts as a kid, so anytime I go hiking or hill walking or any sort of out in the woods or wild for the day i always have an extra warm layer and an extra pair of warm socks, some sort of packed lunch/food (depending on how long I'm expecting to be out or where I'm going will decide whether its just a lunch, trail snacks or 1 or more meals), tea/coffee and a metal camp mug, a metal water bottle, (at least a liter), a lighter or ferro rod, a swiss army knife (or depending on the location a full-size camp knife) depending on the time of year and weather and where i'm going i will pack a sleeping bag and poncho or just a poncho, a small first aid kit and a space blanket, and depending on how long i was expecting to be out for 1 or 2 battery packs to charge my phone..........and id probably have my camera and drone with me as well.

Putting snow on top might have been more viable if you had a tarp or some other large sheet material that could stop it from falling down. But, most people don't carry something like that unless they plan on staying out the night, so it makes sense you wouldn't have included such an item for the scenario you were simulating.

Excellent video. The thing missing from 99.99999٪ of other bushcraft and survival videos these days is a sense of real urgency and danger. People just go through the motions. What happened to "will I make it out of here?" " Will I survive?" There are a billion how to videos on KZbin. I appreciate them all. But sometimes the urgency of a desperate situation grips the viewer and makes it infinitely more interesting and exciting. Even if there's no real danger or urgency. At least give us a scenario that faximilates a real situation. Otherwise, it's just the two billionth and two'th boring bushcraft video that we've all seen ad nauseum, Ala Joe Robinette, etc etc etc. Thanks for the great video. Thanks for not being another lame Joe Robinette.

Plain old matches are still perfectly viable as an emergency lighter. They´re easy to source and, if need be, replace, require little more skill to use than a lighter, and they´re not temperature sensitive like gas or liquid fuel lighters. Just by a glance you can tell how many lights you still have left, or if any of them are unusable. I personally use a small screw container with storm proof matches as my emergency lighter. There were about a dozen of them loosely in there when I bought it, so I used a few to see how they behave and packed the container tight with regular matches, a birthday candle, moisture absorber and an extra striker surface. Now the container keeps about thirty lights. It is a good idea though to have them all head down in a container. If you packed matches head up and head down alternating you might be able to carry more, but chances are you make some of them unusable when trying to get one out with clammy fingers. For the same reason they should also be packed just so loose that you can shake them into your hand if you cant pinch a single one with cold fingers.

put a BIC Lighter in your pack, day, night, short term, long term....it may save your life...and those who say they don't work, when really cold...takee the lighter out, before gathering wood and put in an interior pocket, close to body...by time you done gathering firewood, it will be, plenty warm...easy to light

You say you don’t carry a lighter but try taking one with but no fluid in it and see if you can start a fire with it. And demonstrate how to use different tinder methods like using the lint off your clothing. Or carry and demonstrate using magnesium/flint bar. I think that would be nice to add to the scenario

i've slept on frozen ground, wih just 4 layers of cheap cotton clothing, 1 pair of socks, unlaced shoes, beanie, gloves and an army field jacket. 3 mornings, , I woke up with snow dusting on me. All of the debris was wet/rotten/useless. 30F is nothing much, when you're properly clothed, dry and out of the wind.
