This raid set the standard for hostage rescue. The SAS guys captureed or killed all the terrorists and more importantly, it sent a clear message to terrorist groups that the SAS are complete badass'. The SAS has trained a lot of other special forces units around the world.
@immikeurnot7 жыл бұрын
The training tends to be a two-way street between allied nations. There's a reason the SAS use AR15 based rifles. Well, several, I guess, one being that the SA85 is a heap of shit. But a big one is that it helps cross training between them and a lot of other groups. Most western special forces use that type of rifle.

@@glenaronsson9365 What the other guy is talking about is fame in the public sense. You're quite right, the SAS has been a premier special ops unit since WW2. However, as a special ops unit, they weren't really well known in the public sphere, mainly as their activities largely centred around Army operations in conflict areas. This was the first time the SAS had deployed as a specialist counter terror force, on domestic soil, in front of the world's media. So yes, it is fair to say they were not famous prior to this event, but they were certainly prestigious. Now, they've got the public reputation as being the UK's foremost special forces unit in both a military and counter-terror sense.

The movie is based on real events although some incidents have been omitted or watered down and I suspect others overplayed for effect. At one point during the movie, Tim Pigott Smith playing MP William Whitelaw, suggests to the SAS commander that Mrs Thatcher will not tolerate terrorism on British soil and the X-Rays will not be allowed to leave the country - according to MAC (assault team) in an interview years later after he had retired from the regiment, Margaret Thatcher delivered this message to the unit personally - she went to visit them in their FRV discreetly and made it clear that she wanted a show of force, to send a message to the world that no terrorist would commit murder in the capital and live to tell the tale. He was clear on the unit's understanding, that she had ordered their execution within the confines of the building. MAC went on to say that the X-Ray who sneaked out to the garden with the hostages (shown in the movie) was recognised and pulled to one side to be shot, although by this time Police were arriving on the scene and the command was aborted. In that respect, the operation failed leaving a loose end who festered in jail until 2008. Lucky, lucky boy. Bearing in mind that Margaret Thatcher ordered a Royal Navy commander to torpedo an Argentinian destroyer during the Falklands war that was technically in its own sovereign seas and posing no immediate threat, I believe MAC's version. It rings true and I think she would have gone personally to give them confidence that their leader was behind the regiment and would back them up in any following enquiry (she did). And it had the desired effect - the regiment are still feared the world over. Say what you will about Thatcher, but she had balls - more than any of the limp waisted wankers that have been prime minister since. Brexit? She would have smashed Barnier's back doors in - she was fiercely opposed to the idea of a European superstate controlled through Brussels and she would have fought tooth and nail for the best interests of the British people.

@Arthur Jones Yes, you can read books and they are usually way better than movies, but that was not my point. The cinemas are so desperate to search for attention that they give away the best parts of the movies nowadays. This is based on historical events. Anyone who knows recent history knows what happened. But you are right - trailers nowadays give away too much. However, back in the 80's, trailers were really weird - they just showed random scenes of the movie intercut with the title flashing across the screen at intervals while the narrator just kind of declared the name of the movie in a solemn voice. I don't know which is better/worse.

I was going to look up information about this on Google but the comments are really helping me out I live in Philadelphia so we never learned about this and I was born 14 years after this event so I really didn't know anything about this but I do have the game R6S and I noticed there was a SAS team just like in the movie but I didn't think it was a connection to the movie now I know where they got the idea from I'm looking forward to seeing this movie.

I like when trailers make it so I dont have to go to theater. Popcorn is getting expensive.

I like Jamie Bell as an actor. He's not bound by his appearance. My other favourite actor who was not bound by his appearance was Philip Seymour Hoffman. I think it's an important trait for an actor to have.... Because, in real life, powerful people are not defined by their appearance or voice.

Jaime Bell is playing Rusty Firmin, the guy they have for Macleese has a moustache worthy of the man himself

If you read a book every now and then, you might have already known that would be the story line of the movie
