I wish I could find another person who has a free range beardie 😢 mine has an outdoor enclosure for real sun and a 20 gallon summing tank but she’s so large and calm we just let her do what she wants to inside as I am in the Gulf South of the US and it’s hot here for 3 of our 4 seasons.. but we’re having early cold weather this year so I’m cramming info in for her first winter here with me. Edit she doesn’t take water and never has so that’s worrying me a little bit as well as she’ll be sleeping for so long soon

I just found you recently and so far I really like the videos I've watched. I have had dragons and crested geckos for 3 years now. I'm always looking for people who are always looking for new info that is out on these animals. I always recommend a vet check before brumation. I also have a male dragon who always goes into aestivation so he gets a vet check before that as well. Thank you for providing new info you find and posting links to it. I'm always researching about my animals and what I can do to give them a happy life.

My bearded dragon is about 7-8 months old, and he’s stopped eating, laying in his enclosure most of the day. Talked to the vet and he said it sounds like brumation. Questions: 1) Is it okay to give him Repti Vitamins while he’s starting to brumate via syringe? 2) Can I take him out, snuggle with him, give him baths? 3) Is it okay to leave food (veggies) in his cave just Incase he’s hungry at any given point? 4) He just lays in there with his eyes open, not really sleeping... I’m Very new to this, and I’m watching his weight now, at what point is it dangerous weight loss during brumation???? Thank you!!!

Did you get a fecal sample? His parasite levels can be off. He’s to young to brumate tbh. I’m not sure about 1). But make sure you keep your beardie very hydrated by taking them a bath once a week dripping water around their mouth. Leave a water dish out. If they happen to eat make sure that they bask and digest the food you don’t want it to rot in their stomach.

Great info! Do you wake up your beardie during brumation to have them drink water or soak them? I've seen a few KZbinrs say they do that, as often as weekly. It seems unnecessary to me so thought I'd ask. My Rankins dragon has been in brumation for 2 months and I've let him rest, but have some water in his enclosure should he wake up on his own.
@NORTHERNEXOTICS5 жыл бұрын
I just keep fresh water in the enclosure. If he wakes up and drinks or soaks then that's his body telling him that he needs to do it but if I force it on him it could add more issues

My man’s beardie wanted to get under the couch. He has been under there for a month now. We check on him every so often. This last time he finally moved to the other side of the couch with his front legs propped up. Checked on him today he moved a few you more feet. I think he is almost ready to pop his head out. We leave him alone and let him call the shots on how to live his life. If he didn’t want to eat we didn’t feed him. We took him out of the cage every day and he kept going under the couch. So when I finally realized what was getting ready to happen. I gave him a bath to make sure he was at least hydrated somehow without him drinking water. I figured if he wanted to drink it he will put his mouth under the water and drink if not he is hydrated by way of his skin. I’m not sure if that could have hurt him but he didn’t drink anything and he went under the couch and is there right now but he is shuffling around after about a month maybe 6 weeks ago. I’m waiting for him to poke his head out I miss him so much it hurt s

Thank you, I have one question, especially in the case your reptile goes on/off for bouts of slowing down / shallow brumation. do you need to make sure your reptile has pooped before entering into brumation. Let's say, he pooped one week ago, entered in a 3 days slow down/brumation, not eating. Then out of his hide, starting to eat. Do you need to make sure he poops before he gets back into brumation? My beardie slowed down over a few weeks, the habitat is in the window and we had weeks of clouds. Her temps stayed the same (a bit cooler at night). She finally went into her cooler hide and stayed for 5 days. Then she moved to the middle of the tank under one of her perches. A few days later she was on the hot side wide awake and sticking her tongue out at me. I gave water drops on her nose (other than hornworms, that’s the only way she will take water). She drank so much! And then was very active Sticking her tongue out (which she does when she wants food). I offered her some bugs and she was like nope. But then I offered a hornworm and boom! She ate it up. Then she went into her warm hide. It’s like she knows what to do better than me.

My beardy has been in his cool hide for a few days now. I know he has food in his stomach because he hasn't pooped since the last time he ate. He started slowing down eating and not eating as much for about a week, but then he acted ravenous and ate all of his salads and bugs and was running around a ton. How do you make sure they have an empty stomach? Should I pull him out and put him by his basking spot until he poops and then let them so whatever he wants? Should I stop offering food since he is showing some signs of brumation? He is an 8 year old bearded dragon that I got in 2020 as a rescue. No not at all. In the wild they do brumate. In captivity some do and some don't. Yours may slow down both physically and feeding wise but it's normal this time of year. If you plan to breed the corn then you can physically brumate by reducing food intake and temps. But as a pet it's perfectly fine to just have him as a pet and enjoy him

Thanks for the video. I have a question. I have 2 male python regius(ball python, royal python), 1 male Spider 1 male normal wild type, the wild type male is arround 10 years of age and he does brumate every year since i got him 5 years ago , i never change temperature manually, i only have a temperature drop(change) at night all year arround. My Spider male is 2 years old now but does not go into brumation. Also my wild type male is off food, and his activity is none at this point. So clearly he is in brumation, stomach is empty im 100% sure of that, no activity, no change in heating paterns. both snakes live in their own seperate full glass terrarium of 120x60x60cm and 120x50x50cm, at night heated with a heating pad on a thermostat and at daytime i use heat lamps, both enclosures have a mist and a rain/sprinkler system, they have a cold and a warm side with hideouts on each side so they can thermoregulate themselves, i keep the humidity arround 50 and 60% at all times only when they shed i raise humidity to a higher percentage. So now you know my setup a little bit my question is: why does my Spider male ball python not brumate stays active and stays eating while my other wild type male does go into brumation. Off food and shows no activity. Also can this have something to do with breeding behaviour since both males are of breeding age, and it is their breeding season this time of the year. I dont breed with them, obviously because i have 2 male snakes but i just want to make that clear. I hope you or anyone can help me find the answer
@NORTHERNEXOTICS5 жыл бұрын
Could be as simple as the wild type is a wild caught . 10 years ago that was the common thing . Ball pythons don't do a traditional brumation. They just cool a few degrees. They won't be anything to do with breeding unless they sense a female around.

I'm still going to bring her in for a check up because I'm a new beardie mom, and her behavior is kinda freaking me out. But when she keeps in her hide I dont try to feed her. I offer food when she comes out and is active. I think shes entering a partial brumation but I want to be sure.

That sounds like what my bearded dragon does. You'll find it's the stage before brumation and she will go off food somewhat . If you get worried just nip her to the vets. Especially because your new to the hobby . If the vet says it's normal or ill you'll be learning from it which is great. After a few winters you'll get used to how she acts this time of year

@@NORTHERNEXOTICS thank you. I'll feel a lot better once I get the all clear from the vet I think.

Can I turn off my lights at night when he is in brumation

You should always turn off all light at night, brumation or not. You want to mimic nature and let them sleep

After watching a few of your beardie vids today....i can't help but question....who the hell has been talking to you? "I'm going to put my CORN SNAKE into brumation because someone put their BALL/ROYAL PYTHON down for brumation?! What the hell? And I don't really see anything wrong with your husbandry unless I'm just missing something...I can totally understand someone new to the hobby asking general questions but damn when did this turn into an attack mode session?! man that shit is cringe as hell. At least I can say since I've started watching your channel I can actually go back and fact check you on everything it's clear you've done your research...whats the problem?
