It's pretty amazing that there's a great big yellow school bus with flashing yellow and red lights and it's still not enough to get people to stop. If this works and I don't see why it shouldn't I support it.

Tenth, Virginia recently did a study where they found that the Extended Stop Arm reduced Stop Arm Violations by an average of 55%. Implementing it everywhere would reduce violations in the USA by over 8,000,000 per year... yes, over 8 MILLION.

@@aleksihaapasaari Not really... European Countries are more... Developed? They have a higher use of public transportation, which would be used to get to school. Or they just have their parents take them/ they walk. There are no school buses in Europe. The US doesn't rely on public transportation as much, and sometime the schools are miles away from the home (depends where you live in the US.) Still it's 5 maybe 7 seconds, with kids as young as 6 crossing a street. 6 year olds don't always watch for cars, or the cars don't watch them... The children have the right of way, the driver is responsible for keeping the right of way clear.

I wish American kids in non-urban areas would/could rely on public transit to make them learn how to be independent. Kids in the US (based on my experience) in an urban area tend to know that cars will not stop for them even if they are ready in the same lane.

Whenever a school bus stops in front of me, reds flashing, I flip on all my cautionary/emergency lights on. School bus drivers love it, other motorists give me dirty as looks. Hell, Ive gotten fire engines, meat wagons and cop cruisers to do the same damn thing just without saying a damn thing.

they need those here in PA people pass stopped school busses all the time here the law there states they have to stop at intersections while the lights are flashing they should put a flashing red light at the tip of the crossing control arm that would help motorists see it too at intersections and students loading or unloading the bus.

I think that this is a much better idea if the goal is to actually stop drivers from passing the bus, this to actually protect children. In other places they have contracts with profit making corporations to install cameras to record violators AFTER they have endangered the children. They levy stiff fines. "Policing for profit" otherwise known as "taxation by citation". Which does little to nothing towards actually protecting children from being hit by a passing vehicle. Guess what method the corporate contractors will promote? Extended safety signs or higher fines?

All school buses should have a 6-foot stop sign because it will warn other vehicles, buses, and bikes to stop for every school bus. My bus-drivers Matt Gillis, James, Ron, and Ms. Junes from Grand Prairie Transit should have a 6-foot long stop sign for all of their buses. They also need school bus security cameras on all of their buses, too, but every school bus security camera try to catch other vehicles, buses, and bikes who are not allowed to ignore school bus laws. If you pass a school bus that has a 6-foot long stop sign, the police will give you a ticket. WARNING!: Please DO NOT ignore school bus laws and DO NOT pass a school bus that is flashing brighter red lights.

Some people pass school buses because they are being careless and don't notice it. This will help in those situations, it will help get peoples attention. Others pass school buses because they just don't give a damn. They feel rules dont apply to them, they think that since they are in a hurry that its ok for them to pass, they just dont care. You would be shocked at how many people are on the road driving around with no drivers license, no insurance, expired tags and unsafe vehicles. These are the ones who wouldn't stop even if that arm was 30 feet long and had a siren attached to it.

That was my idea, to put an arm that would block the traffic. Just like a RR crossing arm, it would lie along the driver side of the buss and extend then the STOP sign goes out.

In the UK there is no equivalent law and school buses don't have signs or flashing lights, there is no justification as accidents are virtually non existent. We don't have huge multi-lane roads which is probably a large part of the problem in US.

Although I applaud the idea and experimenting, just using cameras to get the info of the drivers and fine them $3000 has a lot more impact. You can't escape the cameras. It won't happen though because it's all talk about "Our most precious cargo." Let's say each bus carried millions of dollars and not kids. What would get more done to protect the cargo?
