My husband takes pictures of my garden and sends them to me at work. I am always shocked at how *pretty* everything looks! When I go into the garden, I focus on the weeds and the plants which are not yet producing/doing poorly - my perspective is warped by my wanting everything to look perfect and "finished".

I used to live in Cleveland Ohio where I saw my first bulb lawn. It was so sweet with still a touch of snow and crocus peeking through! Thank you so much. I can’t wait for spring to see your bulb lawn!🎉

Erin, thanks for the reminder at the end to bring people in your garden. I get obsessed with people NOT seeing my garden yet because it’s not there yet, it’s not “done”. My neighbor and friend across the street asked unexpectedly if she could bring her friend over to see my back yard. Her mouth was hanging open the whole time in disbelief. She was so encouraging and it really lifted my spirits. It’s easy to get tunnel vision in your own garden but this lady coming over was a reminder that this is a forever process and each stage is beautiful!

There is a PNW native, Darmera peltata, that has a similar look to petasites japonica and could be used in like spots in the garden. Mine is growing under a huge cherry tree and is happy as can be :)

I have grown Darmera peltata for a lot of years in my swedish garden and I fully agree - it is so cool! Mine pick up the colorful falling leaves of a Sorbus ’Dodong’ in fall, and makes them look like candy in a bowl.

My house was on our local garden tour for the 1st time in July, hot lips Salvia, false indigo that wasn't in bloom were the top asked about plants. My garden is also 5b, NW Ohio.

What a fun video! Your garden is beautiful and so fun and interesting. I'm hoping to add some of that in my garden. I grew Irish Poet this year and it was such a great surprise. I'm so glad you talked about the Petasites Japonicus! My neighbor has that growing along her driveway. It's fabulous!

You should put a giant water fountain in the center of that circle, grass area where the tree roots are heaving. That would look amazing

I love adding the "nod to fun" in garden. I tried Tassel plant also this year and love it. The butter burr looks amazing, wish I had more room to plant. :) Last year was my first with Angelica and loved the very unique purple red color. It is a great pollinator, but did not reseed. :( Will try again, 2 years in a row like you said. Thanks for sharing!

On the petasites, there is a variegated form. The one I have seems less vigorous than the regular form. Also the stems are supposedly edible.

Yes I’ve seen it and variegated plants are almost always less vigorous than their non-variegated brethren so it would probably be an excellent choice. I hope to get my hands on that one some day.

Tassleflower is one of my absolute favorites! I got 2, 4” pots in the spring and it’s bloomed all summer long! The movement is provides is amazing, and the pops of color are so good! Mine is reseeding all over, but I imagine it’ll die back when the weather starts to cool. I’m done 7A.

Thank you so much for your videos. We just found them today after looking for options to store our purple/red bananas. We end up buying new ones every year, but we will try wintering two of them this year and see what happens.

I’m excited to see that others also appreciate thalictrum delavayi. I found it about 20 years ago at a little place in central Nebraska that sold unique plants. I’ve managed to keep my one plant alive since then but there were a couple of close calls. It has been hard to find again so I was always afraid I wouldn’t be able to replace it. (It doesn’t produce viable seeds.) This lovely plant deserves to be widely available!

The wasps on your Angelica are actually bald faced hornets, and although they don't seem bothered by you standing there, if they have a nest nearby I'd find it asap as THAT is a very dangerous thing to ,, mow near. You can google for more info, and they are truly a bug to fear! I started my first Angelica last year (in shade btw) which thrived but attracted dozens of the scary bugs! Thank you for the brave video, and all of your videos. 😊

It's important to respect all pollinators. They play an important role on Angelica as well as native plants in my gardens. Never been stung ever.

I hit like and the number changed from 999 to 1k. First time something like that has happened to me. This video was great. The thing about these plant that made people gravitate to them is that they are not common. Newness of an unfamiliar plant will be eye catching. For example no matter the name of the tree, pine or spruce tree is so common that the eye just skips over it.

Angelica! I grew them from seed last year, and when they sprouted this year I was scared that I had somehow acquired plants from Jurassic Park! They are HUGE!!! Question: what do you do to these monsters in the fall? Do you just leave them for winter interest (and; hence; that’s when they self seed)? I can’t lie - I am a little scared of these plants. But I wouldn’t mind if a few came back…

Love your garden. I am also 5b-6 in Holland Mi. I'm envious of your apparently better soil. Trying to grow plant in a sand dune😢. We've put tons of compost but sand seems to eat it up. How do you overwinter your banana plant? My husband made me donate mine to local school because it grew to big. Would like to start another one.

This was a fun video! Love Angelica. Had it in my old garden and you e reminded me why I liked it so much. I think it would fit well in the pollinator/meadow area but something will have to come out…. After one year of successful keeping my Abyssinia in the ground over winter (Zone 7a), it died last year😢 I think we had o e too many cold spells and I didn’t protect it enough.

I have these giant leafy, green plants where I work. Leaves are spade shaped. Up to 2 feet long by late summer. Seem to love shady edges. Help! Everybody asks what the Jurassic Park plants are.😂

I'm in northwest Indiana, not far from you actually, zone 5b as well. When we bought our house 7 years ago, so many unusual plants grew in the yard that I have never seen before since coming from Texas. I think they are pretty, I've pulled them after learning about them, but they keep coming back, this year I just let them be, my husband says just leave them. they are Pokeweed aka Poke Salad plant and Burdock, do you have anything like these in your yard or anything along those lines that you just let grow?

Aralia’Silver Umbrella’. It’s a grafted variegated Aralia that’s difficult to find. I got mine in 2016 from Broken Arrow nursery.

Erin, do you have any experience with Bird of Paradise? Since the banana does so well, for you? We have a bird of paradise, over-wintered in a sunny, southern exposure bathroom. Second year, gorgeous height, no blooms? Suggestions? Thanks!

Yes! I have one that was in the urn last year and is in the big pot this year. No flowers on mine either, although I don’t mind. They typically bloom in fall to spring (so when it’s inside) and they like being pot bound. They also need to have a little age on them before they’ll bloom.
