Hi. I've been trying to learn English 6 years ago or so.. at the beginning it was (and still is) because I like how this language sounds, the influence of movies/celebrities/songs played a huge role in my decision to learn English rather than another language. Now I'm a mom to a 4 yo daughter and my perspective has changed since she was born.. now her and I are learning together, she sucks information in no time. Now the reason why I'm still learning English (in a very chill way) is to help her in the future.. i lost few job opportunities because of my weak level of knowledge of English years ago and I remember feeling frustrated and all of that jazz... We're Italian and I can't see a bright future in our economy... I hope English will be a skill that can help her... Thank you for your suggestions

HI. I do appreciate both your perspective and your way to share your thoughts. Thanks for your advice. I'd like to comment here particularly on what you call the four quadrants (6:51). I mostly agree on what you say about having all four in mind when setting goals or practicing. I feel, however, there is one thing lacking in this view. I feel thinking deserves one additional quadrant - which would make all of this a pentagone! When you learn a second language you have at some point to think with new words, a new syntax, a new grammar. Thinking is distinct from writing or speaking, even if it is part of the process. It might even be the most essential part of the process. Thinking is something you do ; you can learn how to do it and improve it. And, I guess you might agree, thinking in another language is fun. Practicing thinking has a direct effect on your writing and speaking. Every ESL learner can learn to think in English, it's a long and compelling journey. 🙂

Hello, Tanya! I've been learning English since several years ago. of course, I learned English when i was in school but we didn't learn how to speak English , our learning English goal was only for exam. So most Koreans in my generation- in my fifties- don't speak English very well. The reason why i learn English is to travel . So i always want to appreciate you so much because i learn English from KZbin . I'm learning new expressions here 'fly by the seat of their pants ' I will cheer for you learning Korean ☺️ Greetings from Korea 🇰🇷

Thanks teacher Tanya! Your suggestions are always helpful. It's true, comparison is harmful and it's not good for our self-esteem. I like studying English but sometimes I'm tired and I feel stuck. I'm at B2 level and I aim to reach C1 level. It's tough some days 😓, especially when I feel overwhelmed and I'm too busy to manage my life. Anyway I don't give up. You're right. Sometimes we have to set goals that are "outside our comfort zone". Thanks for your time! You're a great teacher and a very sensitive person!

Thank you Tanya for another great lesson. Now thinking of my journey of learning english, i clearly remember that a national geographic journal triggered my curiosity for learning english. I did not seek to learn it for career opportunities, to talk to any native speaker, or for travelling abroad. I just liked it and havent given up since. It suffices for me to listen and understand what good people like you have to say. Just like you, i am trying to learn spanish. Me gusta aprender español. I have never been after this or that level. It is ok which level i will end up with. Thank you..

Beautiful. I think we don't use the word beautiful enough in English. In Spanish they use it a lot more. What you have written is beautiful. Not just because it is beautifully written but also because it has the feeling of beautiful.

Hello, Tanya! As I told you many times before, I entered American campany, so I need to join the campany's meeting with native American staffs in D.C of the U.S. I joined the meeting last month, but I couldn't say anything at all. I felt much sad, so I decided to learn English onece more. I mean it took more than thirty years already from my studying when I was a high school student. In addition, my boss who lives in the U.S is coming to Japan in February. Therefore, I want to show my improved English to her in February, eventhou she always told us we do not learn English, because normally we don't need English abilities in Japan office. And then, I'm learning Japanese instructor's lessons to take the one's license. I'll be a Japanese instructor in this year, and target students are American university students. In teaching them, I don't need English skills fundamentally, but I'd like to be a Japanese instructor who can use English. So, my goal is speaking with native American people naturally, and discussing with native Americans staffs deeply. Thank you, Tanya. Kazu, Japan

Thanks for sharing these tips. I've tried recording my voice for a week, tring to make a journal. However I've stopped in doing it because I didn't remember the words whenever I needed them. So I was thinking in record my reading. Maybe this can be easier. What do you think?
@EnglishCoach3Ts
@EnglishCoach3Ts 2 жыл бұрын
Recording yourself reading is a good idea. It will help even more if you go back and listen to your recording and try to read it more and more smoothly. Recording yourself speaking on a topic will help you more with being able to speak with someone else. If you have words you don't know, try to think of another way to say it, skip that word or as a last resort say it in your native language. This will help you to use and practice your English and also give you words and phrases you might want to learn.

Here most of the teacher teach english in there native language. They do not teach english with english language. So most of the student of our locality try to learn english language with the help of grammar and they want to translate their native language into english . Is it the right way to learn english language ? My problem is when I learn any grammatical consept I understand it but after some days I forget that when I learn another concept of grammar . I want to learn this language like my native language. What do I have to do ? Please mam help me . I am cofused. I get stuck when I want to speak in it. Though I can speak a little but I cannot speak in it anything what I want to speak.

Learning english is a way to go outside the confort zone
@messizhao3813
@messizhao3813 2 жыл бұрын
My notes are below: I am the kind of person on who is pretty spontaneous. I like to fly by the seat of my pants. I like to suggest that you need to set a goal which you want to achieve. Even through I like to be quite spontaneous. Number two is equally as important as number one which is "xxxxx". It helps me to know how often you want to practice and things like that. I am learning english so that I can travel. I am learning english just because I enjoy learning. Knowing how to learn a language is helpful for those of us learning/to learn a language. My goals for learning english have a lot more to do with being able to speak with people and have a conversation. xx is extremely interesting for me. xx is completely different. Let me know what your though are. Number 3 may be one of the most important things that I think you need to know about goal-setting. That doesn't work for me, what works for me is knowing that I studied here and I have move towards what I want to achieve. Maybe you haven't give a lot of thought to it. I would recommend you give some thought to it. I find that In some ways I am more goal-oriented than I even realize. Like I said. I push myself a little more. It helps me to actually get more done. I would love to learn more about that.I think we can always be helping in each other. But I have found that has not work really well for me and it usually does't work well for my students. Put ourselves a little outside the comfort zone. I have been more flexible with myself. Pet peeve, counterintuitive. self-esteem.
