These 6 habits damage your thyroid and may make your thyroid function worse. Avoid these 6 BAD THYROID HABITS to naturally help improve thyroid function.
Just like there are habits that can HELP your thyroid there are habits that can HARM your thyroid.
I've created this list of habits that EVERYONE with a thyroid problem should avoid. By avoiding these things, or by making changes, you can help improve your thyroid function in a natural way.
I've based these habits on the thousands of comments I've read and responded to both on my blog, youtube channel, and emails.
Some of these habits you may not even realize you are doing.
And, by the way, this information applies to those who have ALL types of thyroid problems including those with hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, those who don't have a thyroid, and even those with HYPERthyroidism.
These habits damage the thyroid regardless of your thyroid problems.
Thyroid habits to avoid include:
#1. Not sleeping enough.
#2. Not taking thyroid specific supplements.
#3. Not paying attention to inflammatory oils.
#4. Avoiding certain vegetables.
#5. Eating too much soy.
#6. Not paying attention to your adrenal function.
Enjoy!

So sorry I was not done with problematic thyroid. I’ve had many doctors mostly due to the fact that I prefer older doctors and all while I’ve been under their care have retired to my misfortune. I’ve been told since I can remember ; older doctors more experienced ; well that is what my brothers are always telling me . Aghast what to do. I will be getting the vitamin B12 , zinc selenium, magnesium and Iron though I doubt I’ll find it . I’m also on vitamin D-2 cap .( Ergocal) 1.25mg 50,000u of which is once a week. I’m so pleased having found you, I await for your advice , l realize that you are a very busy and I can imagine what your schedule must be like. But you sound quite well rather extremely qualified. I wish you much happiness and all the good things that life has to offer. Thank You.

Absolutely. Food is Medicine. I'm working with food for everything that ails me even depression. Veggies and fruits like Pineapple for gut health. People are so ignorant to their responsibility to their bodies. Brain health is another chapter. BUT look at what you eat! Skip dessert. There is no reward for finishing your supper. Remember Mom saying no dessert until you finish? Well, God knows we were addicted to the sugar so we stuffed ourselves or fed it to the dog. (i did) so we could get our fix. Yeah Dr Childs is very cool. Just slow down so I can take notes and bring it to my endo! lol

I feel like I was robbed of my thyroid because I listened to "experts", but no one ever listened to me. I avoided cruciferous veggies even though I like them, I ate soy because it is healthy, I worked nights because it paid more per hour and I had kids to feed, I was never checked for food sensitivities, I ate low-fat and used "vegetable" oils. Only my TSH was checked so I didn't know rT3 was high. Cortisol was only looked at for a research study, but I was never helped to bring it down-not easy to do with CPTSD. I was also told that the nodules could NOT be fixed. Be thankful if you are getting this help while you still have your thyroid. I am still struggling to get rT3 down.

I know several ppl with thyroid problems. Always started after a major event. One friend... started after she had a baby. My Mom... started after adrenal and liver issues (ie she had a breakdown from too much stress and was eating all the wrong foods). Seems like these endocrine issues all have to do with stress and inflammation. It’s crazy hard in this world to keep all of that in check. My Mom’s levels will drop so low because she doesn’t want to take those meds or eat properly, that she was actually diagnosed by one doctor as having “schizophrenia” and shows signs of “psychosis” until she gets back on her thyroid meds. Her levels get so low that they tell her she could have actually died every time, but she doesn’t actually have schizophrenia... just hypothyroidism unchecked in a major way. It’s not something to fool around with. Docs put her on psych meds and hospitalized her in a mental health ward before one doc figured out it was low thyroid. She’s had a rough life. Because of this, I’m a big advocate on health. I just wish my Mom would make better choices, esp regarding her Hashimoto’s. 😕

Sounds like she is a self-sabotaging person. Many reasons for this. The person doesn't feel like they deserve to take care of themselves, or sometimes they just don't care about themselves at all because they don't love themselves, and sometimes it's just bad habits and they'd rather eat the junk food they grew up with than put forth the effort to help themselves get healthier. Usually all these things stem from low self-esteem or childhood traumas or emotional difficulties growing up. It seems like a psychiatrist would help her more than anything right now. So sorry you're having to go through this too.

As a night shifter, I can tell you that sleep debt is real. Especially if you have missed 6 or more hours. Sleep debt is irrelevant if you only missed 1-3 hours. But daily missing 1-2 hours adds up which is why people tend to ‘catch up’ on the weekends.

I have never ever heard my endocrinologist say you have to take supplements. And these past 3 years I’ve gained 30lbs. She was playing with my dosis of synthroid and my blood pressure skyrocketed Taking supplements of cal, mag, zinc plus. Vit D all in one, and I am feeling much better waking up and my pains are really hurting less. I take this supplements with my last meal and it feels that is helping me. By the way no thyroid it was removed because I had all the conditions from Hashimoto, thyroiditis, papillary carcinoma and graves.

We took out all the lights and slept with a sleeping cap-blinder. My whole life, I was unable to sleep, due to PTSD. Now that I practice good sleep hygiene, everything else has improved. No more seizures, no more shakes, and my appetite developed after 40 years. Our society needs to tune up, turn off, and chill out. The best gift I can give myself is a nap, preferably under a sunny window on the couch with a cat 🐈‍⬛ on my lap. May I dare say a bunch of peoples money problems stem from not getting enough sleep?!?! Poor decisions lead to desperate circumstances. I blame a bunch of my current healthcare problems on caffeine. It truly is an awful drug. I always say now, you spend 1/3 of your life in bed, so it better be nice! But perhaps, in 21century, since people no longer need to be as physical or spend all summer and fall preparing crops for winter storages, we need to eat less, sleep more! Let’s get the word out *** People are more pleasant when they get 10 hours of sleep a night**** Thank you for your insight

I’m more pleasant when I’ve had 9-11 hours of uninterrupted sleep, and that doesn’t happen much as I have a baby. I definitely rely on caffeine and I’m a lot more pleasant on that.

"get enough sleep" as if it were that easy. When I was a baby my parents were complaining "she never sleeps." I kept my mom up night after night talking to her, rocking my crib all around the room. As an adult with a heavy schedule this seemed to be an advantage. Now a retired empty-nester, I dont set alarms, but I still cant sleep more than six hours at a stretch. It never happens.

Coffee is the culprit. Try switching to tea, without cream and sugar. I had to buy several teas, for variety and flavors, but I can tell ya, coffee gives me nervous jitters, and makes me extremely unpleasant to be around. I live in Colorado, so I eat Cheeba chew thc and melatonin. It knocks me out! I’m interested in the new information that some of these sleeping pills is helping clear out the tangled plaque in the brains to clear out Alzheimer’s disease and dementia

So, for me, not getting enough sleep is not a bad habit. I don’t have any control over not being able to sleep. I’m exhausted and can’t sleep. I’m fatigued and I can’t sleep. I never had sleep issues until menopause started. I slept sound every night and on the weekends I was able to take a nap and still sleep like a baby at night. Since going thru menopause, starting 4 years ago, my sleep has become a huge issue for me. I’m lucky if I can get 6 hours a night of sound sleep. I’ve recently been tested for adrenal deficiency and hormone deficiency. My functional med Nurse practitioner has me on some supplements, but the only one she has me on for thyroid is selenium. I think I should be on more supplements targeting my thyroid. I’m hoping she knows what she’s doing, because I need my life back. This has been going on far too long. 🙏🏻

Why do you not recommend organic avocado oil to cook with? I find that to be healthier than coconut oil and it has a higher smoke point. Also what do you have against ghee? Ghee has removed the casein and lactose from the butter. I use ghee made from grass fed cows - higher in omega 3, and organic - natural source of short and medium trigycerides. Olive oil needs to be organic extra virgin and I use for salad type things only because it has a low smoke point. If over heated, it will turn to trans fats. if used correctly, it is the healthiest oil.

re: adrenals. I have had hypothyroidism since 1995. For the past ~15 years, I have noticed that I tend to be hypo during the week, then get a rush of T4/T3 on Friday night, and Saturday into Sunday, when I am. hyper. I told my endocrinologists and doctors, and they blew it off. It took me finally doing my own homework recently that I discovered this. I discussed this with my new endocrinologist (I've been through 5) and she agreed. Her agreement was so very matter of fact. Now, I feel better than I've felt in over a decade. My question: why are physicians, especially endocrins, not aware of this?!?! I won't say that the lack of attention to this issue has "ruined my past ~15 years", as that would be rather melodramatic, but what I will state is that My last ~15 years have been difficult. Pisses me off

The main thing is that health system is a profitable business, and the only goal is to provide a treatment, not a cure . It makes sure that we have to check in every three months for labs and visit the office doctors, which means expending more money. They don't want us to know much because their business would crash.

Hi, if I get vegetables oils it's because I ate out or someone else's food. Like for example a friend's retirement brunch 😏 I've used virgin olive oil, avocado oil and coconut oil for a long time at home. I had hypothyroidism since 14, now 60 years old. I don't mess with soy. I eat broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts, greens, cabbage and spinach and just heard about oxalates. I have a real slow metabolism now, because I guess I need get moving with more and I'm not exercising enough my main beverage is water. How do you know if you may take too much zinc, selenium or too much minerals. If you supplement or it may be in other foods or supplements? What's in the levothyroxine made from a pig and is synthetic? I'd rather take a real supplement instead of synthetic prescriptions. Doctor won't tell you anything. Can you do both or stop the medication? By the way, I'm not perfect. I eat food out and sweets sometimes. I'm not perfect, but no willpower and then I can go months cooking my own food. I don't buy frozen dishes much maybe veggies for soups or fruit for smoothies. I have to prepare everything. Still heavy 😄

@@KTR2022 I don't think I have hypothyroidism as of yet, but I've become increasingly conscious of changes in my weight and moods over the past year or so. Really hard to tell if it's hormonal or some type of nutritional deficiency, decreased physical activity, etc., so I've just been experimenting with removing all the "usual" culprits. I've been feeling better with supplements, which never used to do anything for me before, to be quite honest. What's worked for me has been trying to naturally raise testosterone and progesterone with food and supplements, managing estrogen with DIM and calcium D-glucarate, taking ashwaganda to lower stress/cortisol, drinking water kefir, eating fermented foods and taking probiotics, and taking dandelion root extract to detox and berberine to manage blood sugar. I also reluctantly cut out soy, broccoli, and kale, and have been doing fine with lentils and other veggies. If you have hypo, I hope you've been able to find what works for you!

Hyperthyroid does not allow you to sleep even taking the supplements and sleep aids too. I eat clean and I eat healthy foods and make my own natural sweet food most of the time. Pretty much I eat organic foods at home and stopped eating at restaurants because of their inflammatory oils that they use and probably using lots of GMO’s also. Six months ago I experienced alopecia universalis. It has been extremely difficult to get adequate care from my medical group. I have a family history of thyroid issues. However, my blood work always was within normal range until my provider finally decided to test for autoimmune diseases. My thyroid antibodies were over 400 and my vitamin D was low. I was prescribed high dose vitamin D. Unfortunately, my provider has no solution for my antibodies. I even went to an endocrinologist who said nothing about supplements. She just told me to go to the dermatologist and take the new medication that is supposed to help regrow hair but has many side effects. In the process of doing research I discovered information from doctors such as you and a few others who are recommending supplements such as Zinc and selenium. I gave an appointment with another endocrinologist. And yes to your initial question. I have fallen short in many of those areas you mentioned. Starting today I will implemented the best practices and things you suggested to avoid. Appreciate the information
