Armour thyroid and 10 things you should know before you take this thyroid medication. Is armour thyroid the best medication for thyroid patients?
Whether you are thinking about using Armour thyroid or if you are already using it, you should be aware of these 10 things!
These 10 things will help you to understand more about armour thyroid as a thyroid medication and whether or not it is right for you.
10 things you should know about Armour thyroid include:
#1. Armour thyroid is not the only formulation of NDT.
You should be aware that while armour thyroid is a great thyroid medication it is not the only (or even the best) form of NDT.
#2. Armour thyroid is better for weight loss compared to Synthroid and levothyroxine.
Studies consistently show that armour thyroid helps with weight loss more than Synthroid/levo.
#3. Armour thyroid is the most expensive version of NDT.
1 month supply of Armour thyroid will cost you around $30 while 1 month supply of NP thyroid will run around $7.
#4. It contains animal products.
All formulations of NDT, including Armour thyroid, contain animal products.
#5. It contains both T4 and T3.
One of the reasons this medication is so effective is because it contains BOTH T4 and T3.
#6. It contains additional ingredients such as calcitonin, T1, and T2.
In addition to T4 and T3 Armour also contains other thyroid hormones such as T1 and T2.
#7. It is preferred over Synthroid/levothyroxine by thyroid patients.
Patients consistently show in medical research that they prefer Armour over Synthroid/levo.
#8. It is NOT the generic of NP thyroid.
Sometimes a pharmacist will try to switch out Armour for NP thyroid but they are NOT the same thing.
#9. Switching from T4 to Armour thyroid can be difficult.
If you decide to switch to Armour from Levo/synthroid then you should use a conversion chart to help.
#10. Armour thyroid impacts your lab tests different than levothyroxine and Synthroid.
Armour tends to impact your TSH, free t3, and free t4 differently from other thyroid medications.

My primary has been telling me for the last 7 years to have my endocrinologist to switch me to Armour, everytime I ask her she switch the conversation. I have been struggling with my weight for over 20 years, but 12 years ago a doctor checked my thyroids. In 2012 they grew from 19 to 54, 2013 my thyroids and partial glands were removed, as the doctor explained once they took them to the lab nothing was wrong. I have taken hormone therapy my weight increased and energy level was still low.My doctors have given me weight loss meds, but nothing works once I take a week break and energy stays low. This time around I'm going to try this Armour. I'm taking synthroid 100 and liothyronine 5mcg, I'm 5'7 & 231lbs.

Dr. Childs, I was treated for a pituitary adenoma. I discontinued my Levothyroxine. My docs are all wanting me to go back on it but I'm standing my ground, simply because the ultrasound scan shows my thyroid is "entirely normal". My TSH and T4 are normal but T3 is on the low. I'm taking Lugol's iodine. At the same time, is it ok to take natural thyroid supplements?

I took Levothyroxine for a short time and it made me feel awful and my eyes bug out. Now I take Armour and feel great and am loosing weight. At first I was over dosed with Armour and had horrible diarrhea and was miserable with other side effects too. At half dose of original start of Armour is just right. I sleep good and have plenty of energy. I do clean eating and take supplements including iodine and selenium . To improve my nutrient absorption, I work to improve my gut health.

@@denises4766 go obtain the drug insert for your medication and take it to your doctor to explain why she believes that this medication you are on is better when you don't feel good on it. Reminder your physician is not a medical school pharmacists most physicians i have been too wont go over drug inserts with me because of the toxic snythectic ingredients they try to convince you is bio identical when they are not 100 percent bioidentical, anythibg synthectic in my opinion processed in a chemical lab is not bioidentical at all.

After YEARS on levothyroxine, my thyroid symptoms were getting worse and I couldn't lose weight no matter what I did. I have a biochemistry degree so I did my own research and found out about NDT. In my check up I INSISTED that my doctor put me on an NDT....and it was a battle....I wound up throwing a fit at my doctor...respectfully of course....and reminding her that it was my body and I would be responsible for the ourcome. Within a week of being on Armour thyroid, I was a new person and within 7 months...between intermittent fasting, exercise and the med....I was down 40 lbs feeling 30 again, BP down to where we could cut that medication by 2/3!!! 76 and living like a 40 year old version of me!! I don't know why any doctor would prescribe synthroids!

Explain to me why doctors have a problem to prescribe this armor? I don't get it. My doctor keeps me on levothyroxine over 12 years and I'm strugling with weight and all she say every time is to exercise and have a diet i'm so sick and tired of this bullshit .I do have a diet and I do exercise without any effect.

I have been on Armour for 23 years. I had a growth on my thyroid and had half removed. In weeks after surgery and on Synthroid I lost my hair and eyebrows. The doctor changed to Armour and 23 yrs later I’m doing great. Skin is a little dry now, but I’m 83 yrs. Old. When I started on Armour it was about $75.00 a year. Last week it was $365.00 (no ins. Will pay) I buy a years supply at a time because they often run out of it. Way cheaper in Canada when they have it. $189.00 for a year. Hope this helps someone.

4/23/23 - I celebrated my first-year anniversary of taking Armour thyroid 60mg last week. I recently turned 76 and am considered by most to be "old"; yet, my PCP always comes out into the reception room and claps his hands and says while pointing at me, "Now that I have your attention, THIS woman is my healthiest patient EVER! I only see her twice a year just for a blood work up to make sure her thyroid medication dosage is correct. You need to ask her what she does daily and what she eats!" And, I have had people waiting for me outside as I leave the building. I am the healthiest I have been in decades; have more energy; and, continue to lose weight. While alternating between Levothyroxine and Synthroid with increasing strengths, I continually gained weight to an all-time high of 152 lbs, wearing size 10/12 clothes, and felt sluggish day and night. I am currently at 121 lbs and wearing size 4 shorts/jeans. I ONLY eat when I am hungry (usually just once per day) and ONLY eat items that grow from the ground or are cold-blooded inhabitants of the oceans. I continuously do yard work; tend to my Monarch butterfly plant garden; and, tend to the needs of wild birds daily..... sometimes until after dark. Initially, my PCP had refused to write me an RX which made it necessary to attend a very expensive, full-blood workup appointment with an "alternative" medical doctor.....but, I kept telling myself: "You can't put a price on your happiness or health!" The first 3-month supply was $93; since then, my medicare insurance has covered the entire cost for a 90-day, home delivered supply. I give thanks to God every morning for my excellent health, wellbeing and Armour Thyroid before I allow my feet to touch the floor! Keep up with your great, very informative videos!

After years and years of taking synthroid and levothyrioxin, my new Dr. finally listened to me and changed me to NP (generic for Armour). I told her about your video and asked if she could switch me to Armour. I’m 62 and hoping this will be better for me. Took my first dose today. Hearing all the positive feedback, I hope it works for me. BTW, my 30 day supply was only about $12. I’m hoping NP will give me the same benefits as Armour.

Finally finding a combination of straight T3 and NDT is the ONLY thing that has made me feel better. Lots of reduced symptoms including less hair loss, less fatigued, hugely decreased amount of brain fog, balanced mood. Unfortunately no weight loss yet but my Doctor is investigating heavy metals in my body that aren't being naturally detoxed. I would recommend you either convincing your doctor to at least let you try NDT or find another doctor! I am blessed to have found a doctor (a GP) who is not an endocrinologist but has such an amazing understanding of functional medicine. She has saved me, literally.

I took Armour Thyroid, 45 mg for years, and like you said, a dif doc sent in my prescription and the pharmacy gave me NPThyroid, and I didn’t notice it. After about a month I started having night sweats, fatigue, weight gain and such. Looked at my bottle and it was NPThyroid. My insurance refused to pay for Armour, but I elected to pay myself. It took a month back on Armour before I started seeing improvements and several months before the sweats and weight gain normalized.

So glad to have your videos. For the past year I have thought I was going crazy or just lazy I lost interest in things I live and felt like I was barely alive every movement and activity felt like pushing straight uphill. They continued to up my levothyroxine swapped me to synthroid upped me again and nothing ever felt “right”. I have been to two different endos. After finding your channel and requesting to try NDT mess I was told they don’t work, they aren’t safe, and even told by one doctor he knew nothing about them and was very uncomfortable with even the thought of trying them. I have finally found a doctor that is willing to work with me and she said she almost exclusively uses NDT medication. I have an appointment in a little more than a week and I am truly excited and have hope again that maybe I will have my life back. I have also ordered some of your supplements that I can’t wait to start once I speak with my new doctor. Thanks for all of the information you share it has really made a difference for me!

You are so right! They started me on Levo and I begged for Armour. They told me I couldn't have Armour if Levo was working. So I called my insurance and begged them and finally they agreed to cover the Armour but the pharmacy made the old switcheroo numerous times to NP. So much so I have to check before I leave to make sure it's Armour. Now I'm dealing with a doctor that just because I barely hit the 'range' of TSH and total T3 and T4 she won't up my dose even though I can barely keep my eyes open, my hair is falling out, my heels are cracked and I've gained 10 pounds. It's BS they think those 'ranges' are good for everyone especially when it's such a wide range. I ordered some supplements you suggested and hopefully they make me feel better, thank you!

I was on levothyroxine medication for years and my doctor fought me to switch to armor. That stuff made me feel like I was in the state of a drug withdrawal all the time I had severe anxiety because of it they told me that medication was not necessarily to make you feel better but to make you live longer I told them I'd rather live a short life then. I just refuse to take what they were giving me I would not take their medication if they would not give me the one I wanted so now I'm on armor and I feel a lot better. My hair is growing back I also quit consuming sugar in the majority of carbohydrates and I had to do that to lose 40 lb. The armor did not just make me automatically start losing weight I had to work at it but at least I had the energy to work at it.

After being stuck on Levo for 2 after my total removal thyroid due to cancer. I felt like I was living a cat's life and slept almost those 2 yrs. The i ran into your channel and asking my doctor plz let us try Armpit or NP thyroid. After months of being on it, omg i felt much better and now a yr now. But i most say if i do get sloppy in taking it or taking it at similar time. I get anxious and my mood goes down. But I learned that i also will have crash times as per usual, no one is perfect. And sometimes the medication aren't super accurate in what it contains as it natural/ animal. Ty for sharing your knowledge and i have to say i have lost weight on it. Nothing drastic but i am over weight so it does benefit me in that aspect as well.

I take Armour Thyroid for simply years and is just amazing. My thyroid was eradicated due to Graves' Disease. In the beginning, I tried Synthroid and Cytomel together to get the T3/T4 but it's the other ingredients of Armour that work better for me. The Armour Thyroid just makes me feel so much better, I am not tired, I don't gain weight and i am happy. I can definitely the difference between the 2 medications Synthroid makes me feel sluggish and non-motivated. Getting doctors to prescribe Armour Thyroid is difficult but you have to be persistent and ditto the pharmacy tried to sneak Nature Throid in on me and I gave it back and refused the medication.

Thank you for this very informative and to the point video. Ive taken armour for many years, and I need to correct you on one thing. The price. I see this video is 3 years old, but even in 2020 Armour was well over 50 dollars. Now,for me, a one month script is 63 dollars. Maybe prices are different at lower doses(Im on 2 grains) but it has gone up a lot over the years. When I first started on it in 2000, I paid 14 dollars......Im considering switching because of the cost factor. NP doesnt work for me, and costs almost as much. My new Doc wants me to take synthroid, but seeing this video shed some light. I wish it wasnt so expensive. Again, thank you.

Thanks for a good video! I was on Armour for about 10 years. My tsh stayed best around 0.7. The dr did no other tests. My labs showed the tsh was 7.3 in May so dr called and said to change my dosage from 2.0 (which was long term) to 3.0. Within a week my ankles and feet swelled horribly for the first time ever. I went in and dr said oh not due to thyroid. She did nothing else. I dropped my dose back to 2.0grains on my own. And sched appt w an endo. She changed me to 2 grains of NP after trying to put me back on levothyroxine 😳. I am still on 2 G of NP. My feet and ankles have decreased swelling by 75% and I feel ok. I feel like I am stabilizing finally but it is now November. My summer was horrible. My ankles still are somewhat swollen but much better. These are my only health problems. I’m 65. I do not trust doctors anymore.

Dear Dr. Child’s, it is really getting overwhelming for me. I’ve been on Armour for years. Now I’m diagnosed with hashimoto. My hashimoto anti bodies from 3.1 to 4.3 in a month and a half. I’m having to demand practically from my Dr. The tests. Now the TSH is 1.4 , T3 is 2.9 reverse T3 is 16.2 I’m exhausted I’m not breathing right I’m crying a lot every thing is getting on my nerves I have high anxiety aches. He says well you’re thyroid is fine the numbers! That’s all he says just take your thyroid medication . But the antibiotics have gone higher. I don’t eat gluten or diary. Or night shades. I feel like I’m on my own here! He did order the tests because I asked since the last one. Completely cannot focus memory loss is huge. I’m following you and grateful. Should I stop the Armour and try a different NDT?? Please Dr. Childs help !! Aug.30,2023 Michelle

For me Armour has been really good. I was given Synthroid at first after many years it stopped working. I then was given Levothyroxine. It made my bones soft. It now have been on Armour thyroid meds and always get a good report. Now that you mention that the pharmacy will switch meds on you. I will be sure to tell my doctor to make that note. Thank you so much for this program.

Can you explain what you mean by "made my bones soft"? I've been on levothyroxine for most of the 16 years since being diagnosed hypothyroid. I had maybe 3 years in the middle where I took Naturethroid, which I liked better, until apparently it went bad, got recalled, etc. Last year I was diagnosed with very severe osteoporosis, like off the charts bad, at age 61. My first thought was "There's got to be a connection to thyroid/thyroid medication," probably because I wanted to blame something, but all I can ever find on the internet (I would never bring it up to a doctor,) is that hyperthyroidism or overdosing thyroid medication absolutely can affect bone density, but hypothyroidism/proper dosing of medication fixes everything--you feel good, lose weight, heart issues are corrected, etc. I DO feel better with the medication than without, and I can't say I seem like someone who was over-medicated except for my heart: I started having heart palpitations/PVCs pretty much exactly when I started levo. It made sense that it would affect my heart--seemed at first like a stimulant. I really felt a lot better the first three months. But then fatigue, mainly, started creeping back in, while the PVCs stayed. Then my heart rate got so slow, I really thought the PVCs were my heart's way of trying to get things going. Or maybe my nervous system...whatever, point is, compensatory. But I digress: bones, we're interested in bones. What did your bones do, and do you know or just suspect that the medication is behind it?

I am a huge fan of Armour!! I’ve been on it for more than 25 years. Never had a dose adjustment- just 60mg (or 1 grain) since the beginning. Lab work is always perfect at 1.3-1.7. I’ve given up coffee and that has made a HUGE difference in my fatigue in the afternoon. Just chai tea or caffeine free tea if I want something warm. Wisconsin gets cold in the winter lol!! I Tried levo for a very short time last year because Armour went up in price so much. I felt awful. Night sweats, constant tachycardia (over 100 beats per minute), metatarsalgia, and overall hot all the time. Spend the extra on Armour, walk a lot and the weight will stay off! 😊

Thank you Dr. Childs. I was on Armour in my 20s to 30s until just before it was recalled around 2010 and switched to NatureThroid which helped, but was never as good as Armour when it was good. THEN the same thing happened with NT. I gained 30 lbs in 18 months and felt awful. I then switched to compounded T3 and T4, but had new power-hungry egotistical doctor who didn't know how to dose right. Once getting the dose right, it still seems even the compounded doesn't help as much as the Armour. Since time has passed, I'm hoping things have been corrected with Armour and I may ask my now new "good" doctor to switch me back to that to see if it helps. Armour made me feel "normal" and like every day of life wasn't a struggle to get through it and a mystery trying to figure out why I wasn't feeling well. I know Armour isn't necessarily best for everyone. Just sharing my experience. Thank you for this video. Saved for later as reference :)

I was on armour for 2 years, when the Dr saw at was in the middle of the range, he stop giving the prescription to buy. I would say that the good feeling lasted for 4 or 5 years , then little by little I went down as I was at the beginning. Went back to the Dr. To get more Armour but he passed away 😮 Went to 2 differents specialists , told them my experience , got tests and they did not want to prescribe me Amour because I still inside the normal range , low range but inside 😢. I wish I can find the right Dr that will do what the original Dr did. Thanks

Switched from Levothyroxine to Armour because of itching. Problem solved. Then heard about NP Thyroid and was thrilled because the copay was so high. After a while on Np, my numbers went crazy and I felt awful. I'm now in a synthetic that's a gel cap. I'm doing okay, but my insurance quit covering it so it now costs the same as Armour, $125 for 90 days. May go back to Armour because I was doing so well on it.

But since I can order Armor Thyroid from abroad with my Doctor's Prescription, I have looked online and it is very very expensive to order! I have now two options, or i use L-thyroxine which only contains t4 and have it in my country,or I have to search online the preparation Dithyron with probably have t4 and t3 in it and it's a synthetic form which is a bit cheaper than Armor Thyroid anyway, so what can you advise me about this what should I do Doc? I am about to get put on Armour thyroid this week. This will be the first instance where my doctor prescribes me with medication as he wanted to see if certain supplements would be of help, without having to get on a mediation. I really enjoyed watching this video and learned a lot. So thank you so very much for that. So my doctor has a very similar mindset about thyroid as you. Most of my lab work was very inconclusive as my most of my levels across the board were in the "normal" range. He told me at this point this only way to know for absolutely sure what the issue is, would be to take a sample from inside my thyroid by thing a needle in my throat. He does not recommend this procedure, by the way. So my question is... Why does my lab work not have obvious implications of Hashimoto or hypothyroid? I have just about every symptom in the book with others due to symptom overlap issues. (That's at least how I can word it in my head) Is the only clear or more clear answer lie in testing a sample of your thyroid? Also, any advice for me starting this journey with thyroid medication would be much appreciated. Thanks again for your video and helpful information.

@FartNugeet69 know you posted this 2 years ago but I am just now reading this. I have just went through this. I haven’t felt right in 3-4 years & all my thyroid tests were always normal. Well, a few weeks ago I suffered a very bad allergic reaction & my thyroid became swollen like a big necklace. So, my Dr FINALLY PCP was able to able order an ultrasound- it found a nodule in my right thyroid- which led to a needle biopsy that found Papillary Thyroid cancer. They say that my tests are normal because the other side is still working just fine. I’m still thinking about having both sides removed. My lymph nodes on both sides are sore as well but nothing in the ultrasound. I went to an Endocrinologist which was very frustrating. I’m going to see an Otolaryngologist (ENT) next week for a second opinion about how they’ll go about my surgery since the Endo wouldn’t even consider looking at my lymph nodes at all. Anyways, have an Ultrasound & the fine needle biopsy just in case.

I think besides my age NOT having hormones, NMN or HGH plus not being able to run anymore... My weight is out of hand. My doc increased my meds from 90mg to 97.25mg this week and three days in I am now experiencing minimal side affects (fast heart palpitations and sweating) which I was told I would experience by the pharmacist. Do they eventually go away? Is it just my body adjusting to the dose increase? If I feel my best on 90mg but bloodwork says different, could I stay on 90mg? I had no side affects on that dose and felt great! I was on Levo for 12 years so I don’t know if switching takes time for your body to adjust.

Started having chest pressure, heart palpitations. TSH went to 8.3. Increased inflammation, allergies. Couldn't exercise without chest symptoms and arterial pressure on my throat. All heart tests were clear. Been on a thyroid see saw ever since. Convinced doc to put me on NDT. Took Advair for chronic cough. Felt super hypo , so discontinued Advair after 4 months. 2 weeks later I felt hyperthyroid. I suspect corticosteroid inhibited thyroid absorption in some way. Can't get dosage right. All doc looks at is TSH. Kaiser docs seem to take 5 min. and then prescribe. I've read hundreds of articles about thyroid because I've basically been feeling bad for 3 years. At least chest pressure is better. I suspect BCP and Thyroid+peri-menopausal symptoms jump started my problems. Wish I had a more knowledgeable doctor. Thank you for your informative videos.

I was put on Levothyroxine after enlarged Thyroid surgery along with High doses of Calcium...after I was done with calcium I started to have reaction to Thyroid meds. I tried to explain I was having a problem but was ignored because lab work was ok...I had been on Armour before for many years.. I was rushed to to ER..with Edema..they suspect it was the Levothyroxin . I have a new Dr and am back on Armour..

There are still some good doctors out there! They are just hard to find and/or expensive.

I’m back on Armour since the recall of NP thyroid. The only thing is that NP thyroid was more expensive by quite a bit( $70 versus $25) than armour. I do get my Armour from a compounding pharmacy.

Was on Armour and was pushed over into hyperthyroidism.. Was put on it by a naturopath without testing all my thyroid levels.. Became really sick-sweating, tachycardia all the time and really short of breath.. Took me months to get over..

Thank you so much for this video!! Your knowledge & expertise is always so evident! I have been taking Armour for 25 years; the Dr who delivered my 2 youngest was a Family Practitioner who very adamant about using NDTs. And you are soooo right in saying that insurance companies do NOT want to pay for it!!! But I go to CVS and they are very good to tell us if there are any changes or if my Dr did not specify. I know many folks are not as lucky. My advice is to be your own health advocate: if you don't, who will? Thanks again,Dr. Childs! So very grateful to have found your channel!!! P.S. When my family/husband walks into the room& I am listening to one of your videos, they just 🙄 and say "Geez, Mom!!! Is that what you listen to for FUN??". 😅😂

@@nicadag Yes, I had two more children. HOWEVER, I also had 4 miscarriages: 1 was an ectopic - they said it was wrapped in scar tissue from my appendectomy.

@@msbonita562 Try to find a Family Practice dr or a Naturopathic Dr (an MD but trained to treat the condition itself instead of just the symptoms). Just do an internet search and begin calling each dr's practice & ask them point blank. They may refer you to an Endocrinologist; but I would really try hard to find someone from the first two instead. And good luck!!!

I pay $48 a month for NP thyroid as of 2023. My medicare rx insurance won't cover it. Armor worked for me many years ago. Sometime in the mid 2000s the Armor manufacturer changed the fillers used and many were experiencing return of symptoms. Drs did not know about this and it took many months of investigating by online thyroid advocates to finally get the info from the manufacturer. Seems that the filler ingredients can affect how and if the hormone is absorbed. I switched to the Canadian version of Armor which did not have the same fillers. Fast forward many years and I recently tried Armor again. Caused intense sinus allergic reaction. I researched the ingredients and armor has seven ingredients . NP thyroid has 3. So 1of the extra ingredients in armor was giving me the reaction. I went back to NP.

Although there are other brands of NDT, it seems to be the most dependable.

Within 24 hrs of starting Armour Thyroid I felt a difference after several year on Levothyroxine following total RAI ablation. I had to pull studies from medical journals to convince my PCP to switch me. The Endos were useless and wouldn't even consider NDT. Unfortunately, as my PCP had no experience with Armour, she started me very low and has been reluctant to allow me to increase my dosage. While I am feeling somewhat better, hair has started to grow back, brain fog lifting, the weight gain has not diminished even with supplements, gym memberships and nutritionist meal plans. If I up my dose I run out of meds before I can refill the prescription.

I was underdosed when switching to Armour. I take a combination of Synthroid and Armour!

Hi, I am hypothyroid with acute adrenal insufficiency. Dr. Elizabeth Bright started me on Armour (my local GP agreed) but I'm so sensitive due to multiple TBI's, I had to start at 7.5mg, then 15, then 30, then 45. Each adjustment had me wiped out in bed for 4-5 days before getting used to it. I tried 60 and never could adjust. So stayed at 45 for a month or two. My new primary doc ran labs and all of my numbers were worse (JUST AS YOU EXPLAIN IN THE VIDEO!) so he switched me to synthroid and I couldn't function at all. So now I'm working my way back up on Armour again. Holding at 30mg right now. Morning core temp up to 97.2-97.4 (from 96.8). Feel like crap. Also, I was not able to tolerate even 50 mg adrenal cortex tablets or hydrocortisone so am taking nothing for the adrenals. Just a lot of cocooning to limit stress. I didn't know there were different NDT's besides Armour. I'll look into those. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
