This is a labor of love and if you want to see it and others like it shot, join the PGI, join a club, go to a shoot or convention. Guys work for months to take shells to conventions and club shoots. I've not made fireworks but I know from an internal ballistics viewpoint due to my activities in the shooting sports that often to stay within pressure parameters a heavy for caliber projectile will often use a lighter charge than a smaller weight projectile will. For instance 9mm. A 115gr projectile will use 6gr of a given powder and still stay below 35000 psi where as a 147gr will top out at 3.5 or 4 gr to get to the same peak pressure. The rifling adds dynamic pressure a but it's a decent representation of the same type of thing

I'm amazed at the time it takes and level of eye to detail. I mean I could compare it to needlepoint. Every stitch in it's place. But in the end needlepoint will last for generations if done with this kind of intensity. This is for mere seconds of enjoyment. It sure is a good thing to see this. How must time and skill it takes to make this. The reason why the bang costs the bucks. I'll never look at fireworks in the same way again. The smallest I typically make are 4", but folks on the site make everything from 1.5" to Jim Widmann's 60 incher. Most common are 4" through 16".

I've never had trouble with static, but it's very humid where I live. I might have to be more careful if I lived in the desert.

@@nedgorski oh I see. Yes one time years ago I saw a program where they were in the desert. There was a copper pad on the outside of the open doorway to be touched prior to entering. This was to eliminate your body from a static charge. The building was also designed so as to if there was an explosion the blast would carry up and knock out the roof. How protective it was to protect the worker, I'm not sure. It is quite something to do what you do. I wish I had the licenses permits and set up that you do. I also wish I could afford to properly study under you. Daily for 3 years or better. I sure don't want to see the handcrafted firework making become a dying art form. As I'm sure you do not as well. Thanks for your videos.

I've been experimenting with using the pre-mixed wallpaper paste, after hearing pros and cons about it over the years. I have plenty of dry wheat paste, but just wanted to experiment with using the pre-mixed paste on this shell. I was pleased with the results, and didn't see any difference in the end result between its use and that of real wheat paste. The pre-mixed is certainly more readily available for most folks. I just bought 2 lbs of W paste.. I will get through that and then be buying some of that wall paper paste.. Seemed to work great. What virgin paper was that? 50 or 70?

That paper mic's at 0.055, so, would be called 55# paper. It was purchased as either 50 or 60 pound paper from Ipsco's Ebay store. It's nice virgin kraft, and holds up well to being wet. n

Nowadays, in Western countries, this craft has become a very difficult one to make a career out of. Maybe display operations, but not fireworks manufacture. You could certainly seek out a local display company, and offer your assistance as a beginner helper. Many of those companies are hurting for good, reliable help.

I have questions galore because this is like magic to me. But I'll limit myself to two practical ones that plague me when doing crafts and you have seem to master the ninja level of crafts. Glue; Basic Elmer glue right? If I do this paper will stick almost immediately. But you seem to have some major flexibility in working time. Is there a trick to that or is it the paper not absorbing the glue(solvent) all that well? Clean up: What surface do you use and how do you clean it. I assume standard Formica tabletop and cleaning with warm water and soap...but hey; There could be magic there too. ;-)

I'm using pre-mixed wallpaper paste in this shell project. The paper gets wet, but still is slick with the paste. I'm just working on a plastic, Formica surface, and cleanup is easy with water.No soap really needed. n
